The agency reports that the latest flu death was a 51-year-old woman from North County who died on December 31. She had underlying medical conditions, health officials confirm. To date, 11 people have died locally from the flu this season – the same number as this time last year. The number of lab confirmed cases also jumped last week to over 1,600, 260 more than the previous week. “Given the high number of cases, influenza activity in the region continues to be widespread, just like it is in other parts of the nation,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The best protection against the flu is getting vaccinated. This year’s flu vaccine matches the viruses circulating this season.”So far this season, there have been more than 5,400 lab-confirmed cases of the flu. He’s in escrow for a four-bedroom home in North Pacific Beach, listed for .17 million. LaValade, a software engineer, said a big reason the seller chose him was because the sale would close before the end of the year for tax purposes.“Because we are renters right now we didn’t have any house to sell to buy this one,” LaValade said.A motivated seller is just one of the advantages a homebuyer may have in these winter months - far removed from peak summer season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews battled several spot fires that popped up near Interstate 8 in Alpine Thursday afternoon.The vegetation fire, called the Victoria Fire, started near I-8 and Victoria Drive around 4 p.m., heavily impacting traffic in the area.Crews from Cal Fire San Diego and other fire agencies attacked the flames from the ground and air and were able to get a handle on the blaze by 5:30 p.m.All eastbound lanes of I-8 at Willows Road were shut down for a few hours as fire crews worked. The lanes reopened before 8 p.m.While the Victoria Fire only grew to two acres, it left some families on edge as the heat continues throughout the week.An excessive heat warning goes into effect Friday through Monday for the inland areas to the deserts. A spokesperson for Cal Fire San Diego said they are fully staffed to handle any fires that may happen.The cause of the Victoria Fire is still under investigation. 929

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds attended a Juneteenth event in Balboa Park Friday.The event, 'Artists 4 Black Lives,' involved local artists commemorating Juneteenth through songs and performances."It was a way to celebrate Juneteenth, mourn our fallen black brothers and sisters, and amplify our black artists' voices," The event director, Eboni Muse, said.The holiday commemorates the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned they were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued."As black people, it is our Independence Day. We were not freed July 4," Muse said. "I personally think it's something we need to celebrate all the time."This year's Juneteenth celebration takes place at a time when the country is engaged in a national conversation about racial injustice and police reform. The atmosphere at Balboa Park was inviting and welcoming, drawing a diverse crowd."I'm hoping our artists will open the eyes of those who see us and really understand how we feel and how this has affected our people," Muse said. 1052
