At the end of last year, the average life expectancy for a Beijinger was 80.2 years, up 2.3 years on 2002.Yang Hui, a researcher with Beijing's Renmin University of China, warned that an aging society puts "great pressure" on the city's medical resources and a "burden" on the workforce."If the city draws too much fresh blood from the outside, it will face anther big problem - a booming population," he said.According to figures released on Thursday by the Beijing statistics bureau, at the end of last year, Beijing's population was 16.33 million, up 520,000 on 2006, the biggest annual increase in six years.Guo said the government had taken steps to prepare the city for its rapidly aging population.Last year, the authorities allocated 11.7 million yuan (.6 million) to build and renovate homes for the elderly. The city now has 336 such properties able to accommodate 38,080 people, Guo said."We want to increase the number of beds to 50,000 by 2010," he said, adding that community services and medical care for the elderly will also be improved.Also at Friday's press conference, Guo said the municipal government will continue to provide low-income families with subsidies to help counter the rising cost of living.In October, the authorities began paying monthly subsidies of 20 yuan to 229,000 of the city's lowest earners.Under the initial plan, the subsidies were to end in February, but Guo said the government had decided to extend them until June to account for possible further price hikes.

They were making 12-day trips to their hometowns of Anhui, Jiangxi and Jiangsu provinces last month.Zhang set up the chorus in February last year with an American. It is the first troupe in Shanghai comprising the children of migrant workers.Following an 18-month training course by voluntary teachers they put on performances at venues such as the Shanghai Oriental Art Center and Jinmao Tower, China's second-highest building.On their visits to the countryside the kids held chorus and solo shows, with electric instruments, for the farmers. They also played games with local children and collated information to write reports."Few of these children maintain their affection for their hometowns and they don't like the countryside. I hope these trips will help them remember their early childhood and the rural areas where they were born," Zhang said.For the first few days, he said, the kids kept their distance from farmers, complained about dirty toilets, muddy sidewalks and shabby housing. They even hid the fact they were from rural areas themselves."It's obvious these children liked the feeling of superiority in front of their country fellows," Zhang said."What we can do, however, is help them face up to the fact they were born in rural areas and perhaps then they will be more fond of these places."They are still young and innocent and I believe they will build up a positive life philosophy and make their own contributions to society," chorus volunteer Liu Jing said."Children of migrant workers need more education in all aspects of life. This trip to the countryside is just a small part and we are organizing other activities," Zhang said.

SHANGHAI: Thirty intellectually disabled teenagers and volunteers from 18 nations and regions shared their friendship, joy and ideas at a forum held on Friday to fight stereotypes and spread the message of the Special Olympics.The 2007 Global Youth Summit, in conjunction with the ongoing Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, offered young people an opportunity to talk openly about their needs and expectations and seek ways to reverse stereotyped attitudes about those who are mentally disadvantaged .The 30 pairs of students each had a Special Olympics athlete accompanied by a peer from a middle school or college.
