Senate Republicans are drafting a stopgap spending bill to extend the funding deadline for approximately 25 percent of the federal government until February 8, according to three sources. The decision to move forward on the short-term plan hasn't been finalized, the sources said. There are still senators who are urging GOP leaders to negotiate for a broader deal.A final decision likely won't be made until at least Wednesday, the sources said, and President Donald Trump still needs to sign off on any path forward.Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York told reporters earlier Tuesday that Democrats would "seriously consider" supporting a short-term spending measure. 694

SEATTLE — U.S. researchers have given a healthy volunteer the first shot of an experimental coronavirus vaccine as anxiously awaited testing opens. Monday’s milestone is just the first step in a long process. The effort is one of several worldwide hunting for protection against COVID-19, even as the pandemic grows. The study is run by scientists at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Research Institute in Seattle. The shots were developed by the National Institutes of Health in record time after the new coronavirus exploded from China. Experts say it will be at least a year before any vaccine is ready for widespread use. 637

Science centers, Smithsonian centers, and art museums are shutting down amid the spread of coronavirus. On Thursday evening, the Smithsonian museums, galleries and National Zoo will all close on Saturday indefinitely. The news comes as a hit to the D.C., which was also slated to host the Cherry Blossom Festival later in the month. The Smithsonian issued the following statement:"The health and safety of Smithsonian visitors, staff and volunteers is a top priority. We are closely monitoring the coronavirus situation and maintain ongoing communication with local health officials and the Centers for Disease Controland Prevention. Due to the rapidly changing nature of the situation, we are not announcing a reopening date at this time and will provide updates on a week-to-week basis on our websites. Follow the Smithsonian on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for immediate updates @smithsonian."The situation is similar in New York, where the Metropolitan Museum of Art is shutting down indefinitely. Here is what The Met had to say:"We will be closing all three locations—The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer, and The Met Cloisters—temporarily starting tomorrow, March 13, to support New York City’s effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. The Museum will undertake a thorough cleaning and plans to announce next steps early next week. While we don’t have any confirmed cases connected to the Museum, we believe that we must do all that we can to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our community which at this time calls for us to minimize gatherings while maintaining the cleanest environment possible. We look forward to soon announcing when we’ll be able to welcome our staff and visitors back to the Museum.” 1738

Rock band Third Eye Blind takes pride in never canceling a tour, but with the growing coronavirus, the musicians may have to do something they thought they would never do. More and more performers are changing live concerts plans because of the virus, which has forced Mariah Carey, BTS, Pearl Jam and even the Coachella festival to postpone dates. The Who and Dan + Shay are the latest act to announce cancellations, though some performers are still on the road, including Billie Eilish and Skillet. The vast majority of people recover from the new virus, but for some, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia. 638
