India has successfully launched a mission to soft land a rover on the moon, in a landmark moment for a nation trying to become a space superpower. The country's latest lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2, which means "moon vehicle" in Sanskrit, took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh state at 2:43 p.m., Monday local time (5:13 am ET).The launch was originally scheduled for July 15, but was abruptly called off just 56 minutes before lift-off due to a "technical snag." India is now on the way to becoming the fourth country -- in addition to United States, China and the former Soviet Union -- to make a soft-landing on the lunar surface. The Chandrayaan-2, which weighs 3.8 tons and carries 13 payloads, has three elements -- lunar orbiter, lander and rover, all developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).It will travel for two months, before positioning itself in a circular orbit 62 miles (100km) above the moon's surface. From there, the lander -- named Vikram after the pioneer of the Indian space program Vikram Sarabhai -- will separate from the main vessel and gently land on the moon's surface near its South Pole.A robotic rover named Pragyan (meaning "wisdom") will then deploy and spend one lunar day, or 14 Earth days, collecting mineral and chemical samples from the moon's surface for remote scientific analysis.Over the next year, the orbiter will map the lunar surface and study the outer atmosphere of the moon.Kailasavadivoo Sivan, ISRO chairman, said in June that the last 15 minutes of the landing "are going to be the most terrifying moments for us."As well as coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, the launch comes as other space agencies revisit the idea of sending humans to the moon and beyond -- NASA has touted a bold plan to return American astronauts to the moon by 2024.India's space ambitionsThis mission is significant for India -- the country wants to become a major space player and put Indian astronauts in space by 2022."India wants to show, especially since Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi came into office, that India is a major power, and that India has to be treated as a major Indo-Pacific power," said Rajeswari Pillai Rajagopalan, head of the nuclear and space policy initiative at the Observer Research Foundation.Chandrayaan-1, India's maiden lunar mission, discovered water molecules on the surface of the moon. As part of that mission, an impact probe crashed into the moon's south polar region in a controlled landing.India's attempted soft-landing is a far greater technical challenge than the controlled crash of Chandrayaan-1.The two Chandrayaan missions are a precursor to Chandrayaan-3, which is scheduled to make a return mission to the moon in 2023-2024.In 2014, India became the first Asian nation to reach the Red Planet, when it put the Mangalyaan probe into orbit around Mars. The Mars Orbiter Mission famously cost million -- less than the 0 million than Hollywood spent making space thriller "Gravity."In 2017, India 3072
In an effort to avoid passing the coronavirus, the New York Stock Exchange announced that it is closing its floor and going to a virtual trading platform starting Monday. The closing of the New York Stock Exchange's trading floor will be until done until further notice. “NYSE’s trading floors provide unique value to issuers and investors, but our markets are fully capable of operating in an all-electronic fashion to serve all participants, and we will proceed in that manner until we can re-open our trading floors to our members,” said Stacey Cunningham, President of the New York Stock Exchange. “While we are taking the precautionary step of closing the trading floors, we continue to firmly believe the markets should remain open and accessible to investors. All NYSE markets will continue to operate under normal trading hours despite the closure of the trading floors.”The stock exchange is highly visible, especially in recent times as the Dow Jones Industrial Average has lost nearly one third of its value in the last six weeks. 1054
It’s that time of year again, when tech companies from around the globe converge in Las Vegas to show off their latest gadgets in tech. It’s the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) conference, and everything from virtual reality to massage chairs are featured at the event. At the Dreamwave booth, CEO Cliff Levin showcased the companies new massage chair.“Our desire was to create something to take people to a place that we called their dream wave, their happy place,” he says. The ,000 massage chair was designed by a combination of Japanese shiatsu experts and a designer who does interiors for Maserati and Porsche. There are also other high-tech gadgets that help with health and wellness. French company Withings featured their heart monitor cuff, which reads your blood pressure, while recording an electro cardiogram. The company says the device helps identify the heart condition atrial fibrillation. And there’s really tech for everything, it seems. It’s really cold this morning in @CityOfLasVegas. If using a space heater to get ready for work/school, make sure to unplug it before you leave & make sure nothing is around it. Make sure the stove is OFF on the way out too. Dress warmly, it’s freezing in some neighborhoods. pic.twitter.com/LQpvX4TQhI— Las Vegas FireRescue (@LasVegasFD) February 20, 2019 372
Kamala Harris has endorsed Joe Biden for president, pledging to “do everything in my power” to help elect him. She is the latest dropout from the Democratic presidential race to line up behind the former vice president in his battle with Bernie Sanders for the nomination. The decision by the California senator who was one of three black candidates seeking to challenge President Donald Trump further solidifies the Democratic establishment's move to close circles around Biden after his Super Tuesday success. In a statement, Harris says Biden would be able to “steer our nation through these turbulent times, and restore truth, honor, and decency to the Oval Office." Although Harris is now rallying around the former vice president, she challenged Biden early in the campaign. During the first Democratic Party presidential debate in June, Harris slammed Biden for his role in decreasing school busing during the 70s. “There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day, and that little girl was me,” Harris said. “I will tell you that on this subject, it cannot be an intellectual debate among Democrats. We have to take it seriously. We have to act swiftly.” 1267
