SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Freeway improvements will force westbound Interstate 8 to close this week.The westbound portion of I-8 at State Route 163 will close Wednesday at 11 p.m. until Thursday at 5 a.m. as part of an I-8/I-5 interchange improvement project, according to Caltrans.Westbound traffic on I-8 will be detoured onto northbound and southbound SR-163. The closure will stretch roughly five miles from Mission Valley to Ocean Beach.Officials ask motorists to observe Caltrans workers in the area and drive safely. 534

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members of a DUI crash victim shared emotional stories about their loss at the driver’s sentencing hearing Friday. Lauren Freeman cried as statements were made about the Feb. 2018 crash in Ocean Beach. Prosecutors said Freeman drove the wrong way on a transition ramp between I-5 and I-8, crashing into Justin Callahan’s car. “I'm Justin's father, he is buried next to his sister who died in 2005. So I think that there's a rule somewhere that children aren't supposed to die before the parents,” said Callahan’s father. Callahan was headed home to Ocean Beach from his job in Chula Vista when he died. She also said she hopes Callahan’s family can one day find it in their hearts to forgive her. Freeman pleaded guilty to several charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. She was originally charged with murder but that was dropped during a plea deal. As part of her agreement, Freeman will serve 11 years, eight months in prison. 1176

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Higher than usual tide will crash along San Diego County's shores this weekend as king tides roll into the coast.King tides are expected to pound San Diego's coastline between Jan. 10 to 12 and again Feb. 8 and 9. The naturally occurring high tide happens when there is an alignment of the gravitational pull between the sun and moon, according to the California King Tides Project.While the outcome produces amazing imagery and scenes of ocean water splashing over shorelines, it can be hazardous at times. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — FBI investigators are looking for an armed suspect who stormed into a Mira Mesa bank Wednesday and ransacked the bank's vault.The man stormed into the Cal Coast Credit Union located at 9825 Mira Mesa Blvd. just before 10 a.m. Wednesday. The man, who was wearing a mask and hood, jumped on a counter and made verbal demands to the bank's tellers.The man displayed a handgun, ordered several employees to the ground, and demanded access to the bank's vault, investigators say.While inside the vault, the man empties a recycling bin and used it to collect cash from the vault. He then fled in a white Chevy Z71 pickup truck that investigators say he backed up to the bank's entrance before entering.The man is described as possibly African American, 5' 5" tall, weighing 150 pounds with muscular build, and was last seen wearing a black ski mask, navy blue hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, black gloves, and a black mask.Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego FBI at 858-320-1800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1048
