UPDATE: Tuesday's meeting was canceled due to an illness.SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Tuesday night, the City of San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department will present two options for redeveloping the De Anza area to the Mission Bay Park Committee. The meeting is open to the public and begins at 6 p.m. at Mission Bay High School. The two plans were released to the public over the summer. Both feature improvements to sports fields, the Mission Bay Golf Course, green space, walking paths, playgrounds and beaches. Both also have new wildlife habitat areas included, although they vary on how many acres (27 or 38). A more detailed look at the plans can be found here. But wildlife preservations groups like the San Diego Audubon Society and ReWild Mission Bay say they don't go far enough to preserve the habitat or protect wildlife. They're calling for up to 200 acres of land set aside. They say it can also provide a buffer against sea level rises from global warming. They've put forth three other alternative plans that have limited amenities for people, but focus on open habitat space."I don't think being able to use an area for cycling, walking or jogging and conservation of the bay are mutually exclusive," says Linda Conser, who walks along the bay every week. "I think they can exist together.""A lot of my friends use this area," says Chris Garry, who launches his fishing boat from the dock at De Anza Cove. "I'm interested to see what it's going to be like." 1490

Uncle Ben's rice promised Wednesday to make changes to its brand image, hours after Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup promised to change its name and logo.Mars, the parent company of Uncle Ben's, did not say how it would make changes to the brand's name or logo but promised to "evolve the Uncle Ben's brand, including its visual brand identity," according to a statement on its website."We don’t yet know what the exact changes or timing will be, but we are evaluating all possibilities," the statement read. "Racism has no place in society. We stand in solidarity with the Black community, our Associates and our partners in the fight for social justice. We know to make the systemic change needed, it’s going to take a collective effort from all of us – individuals, communities and organizations of all sizes around the world."According to Uncle Ben's website, the name "Uncle Ben" refers to a "legendary Texan farmer, Uncle Ben who was known for his exceptionally high-quality rice." Frank Brown, a maitre d' at a Chicago restaurant, posed for "Uncle Ben's" portrait, which has since served as the brand's logo.Critics say the brand harkens back to slavery and Jim Crow-era South, where older black slaves and servants were frequently referred to as "Aunt" or "Uncle."On Wednesday, Aunt Jemima said it would remove it's logo — which has origins in minstrel show tropes — from packaging beginning in the fourth quarter of 2020 and would eventually rename the brand. The changes come as American institutions hold conversations about systemic racism amid weeks-long, largely peaceful protests in dozens of cities across the country. The protests were sparked by the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis on Memorial Day. 1757

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — Ventura County leaders have approved restraining orders and other enforcement actions against individuals and businesses who refuse to comply with local and state health orders to control the spread of the coronavirus. The meeting was called days after the pastor of Godspeak Calvary Chapel in Newbury Park said he would continue holding indoor services despite restrictions on large gatherings. RELATED: Charges filed against Ramona Gym owner for failure to comply with public health ordersMeanwhile, prosecutors in San Diego have charged a gym owner with five misdemeanors for operating during the state’s shutdown orders.According to the San Diego District Attorney's Officer, Peter San Nicolas, owner of Ramona Fitness Center, is facing five charges for “violation of California emergency services act.”According to the document, each of the misdemeanors carries a ,000 fine.
