(KGTV) -- A Chula Vista woman's holiday decorations vanished from her lawn Thursday morning — but she's determined not to let "the Grinch" steal her Christmas spirit.It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Wendy Claproth's home in East Chula Vista. Since her husband's passing ten years ago, Claproth says she did not have the spirit to spread Christmas cheer outside. But this year, she finally got the courage to give it a shot.On her front lawn, she put up a large blowup Christmas tree snowman, hung lights along the roof, set up candy canes, wrapped her mailbox, and even created a Christmas tree with a set of lights. Her house screamed "festive." But on Thursday morning, she noticed that her brand new Christmas tree snowman inflatable was gone."Yes, you get mad, but more than anything, you get disappointed," Claproth said.It wasn't the wind, and it definitely was not an accident. Thieves had ripped the blowup right from her lawn, leaving only the stakes."It was kind of angled towards the corner all by itself over there, so I guess it was an easy prey," Claproth sighed.She wrote about the incident in her neighborhood app and found that she was not the only victim. Many others chimed in, saying the Grinch stole their Christmas decorations as well.Chula Vista Police says while there are not too many official reports of stolen decorations, these thefts, unfortunately, are common during the holiday season. (KGTV) - Chula Vista neighbors are dealing with the aftermath of a San Diego Gas and Electric equipment malfunction that triggered a power outage and caused their homes to smoke.Residents on Country Club Circle told 10News about the outage Saturday night. Electricity was restored and everything seemed fine, they said, but they woke up to sparked outlets, smoke and fire Sunday morning.“Every single room sounded like someone came in with gunshots,” said Mona Hernandez. “My girls got up screaming ‘fire’ in one of the rooms and I thought they were on fire. I feared they were actually on fire until I got to see them.”SDG&E said the equipment failure involved a transformer and affected more than 400 homes in the area.One woman said she was concerned about her air conditioning and heating working for her son.“He’s disabled. We need the heater to use. He's going to have open brain surgery next week. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista police officer shot and killed a man who stabbed him several times in the face Tuesday night.Two officers got a call from a resident on Melrose Ave. who said a man threw a piece of concrete the size of a baseball at his head abouut 9 p.m.The officers determined the man was at a home on Monterey Ave. and went to the address at 10:25 p.m., police said.A woman opened the home's front door to the two officers.  The man began assaulting the first officer, police said, and they scuffled.Police tell 10News the man stabbed the officer up to half a dozen times in the head and face. The officer fired several times in self-defense, police said.At least one shot hit the man, who died on his way to the hospital.  CVPD identified him as 27-year-old David Scott.The second officer and the department chaplain, who was on a ridealong, were able to assist the injured officer. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Facing a nearly million budget shortfall, the superintendent of Sweetwater Union High School District revealed a proposal Friday to issue more than 230 layoff notices to teachers and staff and eliminate a program that helps struggling students graduate.According to agenda documents posted Friday afternoon, Dr. Karen Janney will ask the Board of Trustees to eliminate 237 positions, including 182 teachers and all 23 librarians.Sweetwater’s financial woes came to light in 2018 after the district miscalculated its budget by million.RELATED: Sweetwater Union High School District approves interim budget with million shortfall“To see financial ineptitude affect people’s lives this way, it’s devastating,” said Sweetwater Education Association Vice President Cesar Fernandez. “It’s a kick in the gut. CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Owners of vacant or blighted property in Chula Vista will now be able to get a tax break in exchange for growing fruits and vegetables.The plan was approved Tuesday by the county Board of Supervisors. The city is covered by an Urban Agriculture Incentive Zone which allows owners of more than 170 qualifying properties to submit plans to turn the land into community gardens or other agricultural uses.The program, created by a 2014 law, would lower property taxes based on per-acre value of the irrigated farmland.City officials say the aim of the plan is to increase green spaces, build community and educate the public about fresh food production."It's a great way to utilize parcels that maybe haven't been developed to their full potential," Supervisor Greg Cox said. "I think that's something we ought to see, frankly, in the other 16 cities in San Diego County and the unincorporated area."San Diego became the county’s first city to adopt the program in 2018 with 2,000 properties eligible for the program.Property owners must now apply with the city.
