GENEVA, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The international community should have "a sense of urgency" in their efforts to realize the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Chinese Minister of Health Chen Zhu said here on Monday."The deadline of the MDGs is only five years away, and we are facing huge challenges at this critical moment," Chen told the annual assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO)."The international community should have sense of mission and urgency to reach consensus, coordinate actions, and accelerate progress," Chen said.Addressing delegates from the WHO's 193 member states, Chen said that despite the unremitting efforts of the international community, "the MDG health indicators of women and children have been improving slowly and the situations are far from optimistic.""China holds that health of women and children constitutes an important element in a country's national basic health system and it reflects the social and economic development level," he stressed.Chen said the attainment of the MDGs would be "a historical milestone," and he urged governments to share this responsibility and "take stronger measures."One of the proposals the minister made at the conference was to improve the health of the people, particularly women and children."The ultimate goal of social and economic development is better life and brighter future for the people, and health is the basis of good life," he said.To improve the health of the people, countries need to build a strong and powerful health system so that they can provide comprehensive health services and tackle public health emergencies, according to the minister."All countries should attach importance to the building of such a system with articulated political commitments and substantial input," he said.Chen also highlighted the importance for controlling chronic and noncommunicable diseases, which "consume large quantities of health resources and afflict social and economic development.""To ensure sustainable health, social and economic development, the international community should conduct researches and take more effective countermeasures in its fight against such diseases, " he said.The minister also called on developed countries to increase their assistance to developing countries so that they can improve their health system and be more capable of dealing with health challenges."Health is an eternal theme of mankind, and the attainment of the MDGs is our common pursuit. BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- As the curtain is about to rise on the upcoming second round of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED), to be held in Beijing on May 24-25, the world's attention will again focus on the Chinese capital.Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said Thursday that in order to achieve positive results from the dialogue, China will strengthen communications, enhance mutual trust and deepen cooperation with the United States.Analysts say this round of talks is of special significance because it signals a new consensus reached by the two sides after overcoming certain obstacles in their relationship.MOVING TOWARDS THE SAME DIRECTIONThe history of Sino-U.S. relations is full of twists and turns, so every step forward and every turn for the better is precious.The second S&ED will be another positive turn for both nations after they overcame a number of complicated problems in their relations.After Barack Obama took over the White House last year, Sino-U.S. relations got off to a good start. BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Major indices of China's large ports mostly pointed to better performance in April with increasing cargo throughput and exports volume, the Ministry of Transport said Wednesday.According to latest figures posted on the ministry's website, China's large sea ports and river ports saw rapid throughput growth in cargo, exported goods volume and containers from January to April.Passenger throughput via large ports, however, fell 18.5 percent from a year earlier to 295 million in the first four months of 2010, the ministry said.Large ports are classified in China as sea ports with an annual cargo throughput above 15 million tonnes and river ports with an annual cargo throughput above 10 million tonnes.From January to April, cargo throughput in those large ports jumped 20.2 percent year on year to about 2.48 billion tonnes, the ministry said.About 206.5 million tonnes of goods were exported via the large ports during the January-April period, up 27.2 percent from a year ago.Container throughput rose 22.4 percent year on year to 436.81 million TEUs in the first four months, according to the ministry.
