(KGTV) -- Many scientists and doctors are cautiously optimistic about taking a step forward in the fight against COVID-19 after encouraging news from Pfizer Monday.Pfizer announced that early data revealed its vaccine was more than 90 percent effective in protecting trial participants against the coronavirus.The U.S. Federal Food and Drug Admiration still needs to review the drug for safety and efficacy, and Pfizer plans to seek an Emergency Use Authorization this month, but regardless some see this as a good sign for other vaccine trials.“I think this is frankly the break we’ve all been waiting for, and I hope we have many others to follow,” said Dr. Susan Little, a UC San Diego Professor of Medicine.UCSD is participating in Phase 3 clinical trials for Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Janssen vaccines.Little leads the AstraZeneca and Janssen trials, which resumed locally last week.“I think what this means for all of the trials that are available at this stage, this is incredibly good news,” she said. “So far, they all use the same approach to vaccine development; they are all targeting the same protein, the spike protein, on the coronavirus.”She expects similar results to come from Moderna’s early data sometime this year.“The Pfizer and the Moderna both use the same vaccine platform, the same structure for their vaccine construct, so there’s every reason to be very optimistic the Moderna study might show similar results,” she said. “While the AstraZeneca and the Janssen use a different vaccine construct, they both are targeting the same protein.”If Pfizer’s vaccine is approved, it could be given to healthcare workers and high-risk populations in just months, and the general population in 2021, according to Pfizer.Pfizer said it expects to produce 50 million vaccine doses globally in 2020 and up to 1.3 billion in 2021.Pfizer’s CEO, Albert Bourla, said he expects the vaccine to be free of charge for Americans. 1943

(KGTV) — Recent wildfires that have been fueled by extreme weather conditions across California are already among the state's largest wildfires, burning a combined more than half a million acres.According to CalFire, the LNU Lightning Complex and SCU Lightning Complex fires are already the second- and seventh-largest wildfires in California history, respectively. Both fires are believed to have been caused by lightning strikes.The fires are two of more than 500 burning across the state as of Friday. Many of those fires were sparked by lightning strikes earlier this week.The LNU Lightning Complex sparked Monday just north of Napa and has burned 302,388 acres. That blaze was 15% contained Friday. The SCU Lightning Complex fire started Tuesday east of San Francisco and has burned 229,968 acres. As of Friday, it was 10% contained.Gov. Gavin Newsom says the blazes across the state are taxing California's firefighting capacity, but that assistance from 10 states is starting to arrive. CalFire Chief Mark Brunton pleaded with residents to leave their homes and not to battle the fires themselves, saying that could put more lives at risk.According to the Associated Press, more than 12,000 firefighters, helicopters, and air tankers were deployed Friday to battle wildfires throughout the state. 1311

A 3-month-old child was found alive this week in a Painesville, Ohio apartment with her parents who had died from an apparent drug overdose.Police performed a welfare check at the apartment on the 1280 block of West Jackson Street Sunday afternoon where they found 29-year-old Matthew J. Jacquemain and his girlfriend 25-year-old Sarah K. Poorman dead in the home from apparent drug overdoses.Police said they found the couple's infant daughter in the apartment. (KGTV) - The nationwide group behind Women's March is organizing a national school walkout following Florida's high school shooting.The group is calling for students, teachers, and parents to take part in walking out of school for 17 minutes - a nod to the 17 lives lost in the Feb. 14 shooting - to "protest Congress' inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to gun violence.""Enough: National School Walkout" is being scheduled for 10 a.m. local time across the U.S. on March 14.
