BEIJING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a two-month campaign to inspect work safety nationwide on April 5, according to the work safety commission of the State Council, or the Cabinet.Serious accidents took place in succession in some areas and industries recently, which shows negligence and loopholes in work safety management and serious violations to laws and regulations, said a circular issued by the commission.The inspection would focus on work safety in mines, the chemical industry, transportation and fire-works mills, among others.The campaign would include self-examination by enterprises, government inspection and public supervision.Enterprises are required to complete self-examination in April and local governments to conduct inspection in May, while the commission would dispatch supervision teams to check their work.The nationwide campaign comes days after 153 coal miners were trapped in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province, which will be China's worst mining disaster in more than two years if the miners cannot be saved.

CHICAGO, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The Chicago-based Boeing Company reported on Wednesday that its first-quarter net earnings were 519 million U.S. dollars, down 15 percent from 610 million dollars in the same quarter last year, citing the health care legislation charge.The aerospace and defense giant said in its first quarterly financial report that total revenues for the first three months were 15.22 billion dollars, down from 16.50 billion dollars in the prior year quarter while the earnings per share was down to 70 cents from 86 cents one year ago.Boeing indicated that the results for the quarter reflect solid performance across core businesses and a previously disclosed 20 cents charge per share on health care legislation, while the year- ago quarter results were reduced by 31 cents per share on a charge due to poor market conditions in commercial airplanes."With clear progress on the 787 and 747-8, solid financial performance and marked improvement in our customer outlook, we continue to draw on the positive momentum we saw at the end of 2009," said Jim McNerney, Boeing chairman, president and chief executive officer.Boeing's earnings guidance for 2010 is pegged at 3.50 dollars to 3.80 dollars per share, reduced from 3.70 to 4.00 per share due to the charge on health care legislation. URUMQI, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China would spend 120 to 150 billion yuan (17.6 to 22 billion U.S. dollars) on transport infrastructure in its far-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region over the next five years, the regional government said Saturday.The money will be used to build new roads and renovate old ones to support Xinjiang's "leapfrog development" promised by the central government earlier this month, according to a statement issued after a conference of the Ministry of Transport and Xinjiang's regional government.The paved roads to be built or renovated will reach 75,000 to 80,000 kilometers in the region where there were just 15,000 kilometers of paved roads in place by the end of last year, said Song Airong, a regional Party official.Xinjiang's current 838 kilometers of highways will also be extended to 4,000 kilometers over the next five years, he said.The central government unveiled a policy package last Thursday to support the development of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, setting a goal that the region should undergo a spurt in development so that by 2015 its per capita gross domestic product could reach the national average.Under the package, fixed asset investment in Xinjiang in the next five years will be more than double the amount in the current five-year plan that ends this year.

NAIROBI, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Somali pirates have hijacked a Taiwan fishing boat off the Horn of Africa nation coast with 26 crew members, a regional maritime official confirmed on Saturday.Andrew Mwangura, East Africa coordinator of Seafarers Assistance Program, said the ship's owner lost contact with the Tai Yuan 227 two days ago north of the Seychelles as it headed for the Maldives. "The fishing boat lost contacts two days ago and has 26 crew members from China, Kenya, Taiwanese and Mozambique.
