SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning drivers about a series of overnight closures along Interstate 5 over the next two weeks.From Sunday, November 4 through Thursday, November 8, northbound I-5 will be closed between La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue between 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.Northbound I-5 will also be closed from Tuesday, November 13 through Thursday, November 15 in the same area from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.CHECK TRAFFIC The agency is encouraging motorists to take an alternate route to avoid possible congestion.The section of the interstate will be closed so crews can remove the temporary wooden structures from the new Gilman Drive Bridge over I-5. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Black history in San Diego goes back hundreds of years, but a unique aspect specific to the area is a historic building that no longer stands. At the intersection of Market and 2nd in downtown, there is a small plaque on the ground. This marker is all that’s left of the historic Hotel Douglas, a place founded in the Roaring 20s that became an icon for the area.George Ramsey founded Hotel Douglas in 1924 as a place for the black community. During this time, segregation was prevalent, and many hotels were whites-only. Ramsey created the hotel as a way to give a space and economic boost to black people.“He had the idea of creating a black hotel. When I say black hotel I mean a hotel run by black people, owned by black people, employing black people, serving black people,” said David Miller, a history professor who also works with the San Diego History Center.Miller said the hotel became a famous spot because of the nightclub inside that drew in many famous black performers, including Bessie Smith and Duke Ellington, who would stop on their way to shows in neighboring major cities.“San Diego was a stopover point so the club in the hotel became a center for black performers and in fact became dubbed the Harlem of the west,” said Miller.The hotel no longer stands, but the plaque marks the history it represents. Miller said this history, similar to other major black history days like Juneteenth, is important to know and understand to grow as a society.“It’s a chance to truth tell and to learn about not necessarily a moment in history but a moment in history that illustrates the ongoing nature of making freedom and navigating what freedom means now as free people,” he said.The San Diego History Center will reopen to the public July 4, 2020 after closures due to coronavirus. There are also resources available online to learn more about local history. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Before Vice President Mike Pence made his way to Coronado, he spent the morning at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel.The Vice President and Second lady stayed there during their San Diego Visit. A few protestors inflated the now well-known "Baby Trump" outside of the hotel; It's possible the Vice President got a look at the giant balloon. "We're hoping that the Vice President sees this and sees that there is resistance here in San Diego," says protestor Will Johnson. The giant balloon was an attention grabber for many who saw it on Park Boulevard. "I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't know he was staying here," says Kate Permenter. Permenter is in town for a convention and staying at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, saying, "So last night people kind of started freaking out."Outside of the hotel, security checked every car making its way into the garage. Hotel guests say there are dozens of police officers and secret service agents inside of the hotel. "At every entrance, there are cops just kind of staring at you."Dozens of officers escorted the motorcade as the Vice President left downtown this morning. According to Transparent California, Gómez made more than ,000 that year from her job as a San Diego City Council member and an additional ,000.University of San Diego professor of law Ariel Jurow Kleiman specializes in federal tax law. ABC 10News reporter Adam Racusin asked her to look at the filing."There was a zero on the line where you would normally report your wages," Kleiman said.Discrepancies in Gómez's tax returns were first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune.The numbers on Gómez's 2018 return also don't match the dollar amounts reported on a financial disclosure report for Congressional candidates.In a statement, Gómez says her accountant made the errors, but that she has filed a corrected return and paid back the taxes."You may have seen a story about my accountant’s errors on my taxes. Like most people, I trusted my accountant to file my taxes accurately and I was shocked to find out that my 2017 returns were not properly filed. My accountant has taken responsibility for the errors.
