SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the late '80s Gary Cheatham founded Auntie Helen's in a one-car garage in North Park in 1988.Gary did fluff-and-fold laundry first for one, then for a handful of friends who were sick with AIDS."Everybody could do it. But nobody would do it. And I think that makes him a superhero in my eyes," says Auntie Helen's current Executive Director, Rod Legg.Fear and stigma at the time hurt the LGBT community as much as the disease, but word spread quickly about Gary's services, and Auntie Helen's grew. Sadly, so did the disease.HIV and AIDS claimed more than 100,000 lives in the U.S. in the 1980s. Many of Gary's clients and friends who died willed their estates to Auntie Helen's.Their belongings accumulated in Gary's garage, which was also where he did laundry. Eventually, with help from a few high-powered friends and other activists, Gary opened Auntie Helen's thrift store in 1989.The laundry service and the thrift store are still located in North Park."We also do COVID-19 [laundry], which is our frontline medical workers. That's a tie in to the past, we had to do that. We had to offer that," Legg says.They're expanding the store, and their outreach, giving out free groceries to their regular clients (about 25-35 individuals) and now also to frontline workers.With COVID-19 leaving so many more people on hard times, they started delivering groceries — no questions asked, no referral needed. At one point, to more than 300 people.Legg explains, "this is everybody's HIV in a sense... We don't know where we're at. We're all wondering what's going to happen the next day, but most importantly is neighbor to neighbor we need to make sure we're taking care of each other."All in keeping with the legacy of Gary Cheatham, about whom, Legg says, "this man was way before his time... Can you imagine the faces of the people that got the hugs, and the clothes? We should all be our heroes, for each other." 1943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lime is warning riders of a problem with their deckles scooters that can cause “sudden excessive braking during use.”The company issued a safety update on Saturday, saying they had recently discovered a bug in the firmware of their scooters.They determined in some circumstances, the brake on the front wheel would be suddenly and automatically applied often after hitting an obstacle while riding downhill at high speeds.“While this issue has affected less than 0.0045% of all Lime rides, some riders have been injured,” wrote Lime in the safety update.That includes Paul Grasso, who says he was riding a Lime scooter on December 18 on Ingraham Street near Vacation Road in Mission Bay.He said he had just gone down the bridge and was making his way up a sidewalk ramp when the scooter’s wheels tightened up, sending him flying face-first into the pavement.“I spent five days in the hospital,” he said with a “broken nose, fractured skull, traumatic brain injury, fractured eye socket, ten stitches in my forehead and stitches on my nose.”10News reached out to Lime about Grasso’s crash but they said they couldn’t comment on rider specific questions.Lime has launched a fleet-wide firmware update to fix the braking bug. It should reach all of their scooters in the next few days, according to the company’s safety update.Until they have confirmed that all of their scooters have been updated, they have issued a list of precautions for riders:Before starting your Lime trip, walk around the scooter and do a visual inspection of the hardware. Is the vehicle body in good condition? If not, don’t use that vehicle; report it to our customer service team and then select another vehicle.Once you start your Lime trip, give the brake a tight squeeze. If the brake does not engage properly and immediately stop the vehicle, dismount, end the trip and notify Lime customer service.Use extra caution in the next few days while we issue the final firmware update -- especially when riding downhill. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – It's exploding in the wellness industry, but is CBD safe? 10News visited a San Diego lab that tested CBD products for ingredients like pesticides and heavy metals. The results were surprising to lab personnel. Shelby Huffaker is the lead cannabis educator at Torrey Holistics in Sorrento Valley. The licensed dispensary recently conducted its own CBD study to show customers just how unreliable the open market can be. "We collected about a dozen different products from various locations around San Diego and also on the internet," she tells 10News. Torrey Holistics collected samples from places like farmers' markets, grocery stores, and the internet. The company bought CBD products such as lip balms, caramels, creams, and bath bombs, then sent to San Diego's Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs. "It's pretty busy right now with it being harvest time," says David Marelius, Ph.D. He's the co-founder of Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, which tests cannabis and related products. "People are definitely trying to take advantage of the CBD boom right now," he adds. Both CBD and THC come from the cannabis plant, but CBD does not have the psychoactive properties that give you the feeling of being high. CBD received praised for claims of health benefits like reducing anxiety and inflammation. According to Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, none of the CBD samples purchased on the internet by Torrey Holistics had any CBD in them. Dr. Marelius tells 10News that the majority of the overall samples didn't meet their packaging claims. He adds that the products' potencies were off, and one product had almost 70% less CBD in it than what it advertised. Three of the products reportedly failed for pesticides, although the levels were so low that they likely weren't harmful. "It's kind of the wild west out there," says Sally Greenberg with the National Consumers League. Greenberg tells 10News that CBD sellers often exaggerate the benefits of CBD without having the science to back up the claims. "[They say] that they cure cancer or treat Alzheimer's or treat AIDS," she adds. The National Consumers League is advocating for federal oversight from the Food and Drug Administration, which currently doesn't regulate most CBD. In California, the Bureau of Cannabis Control tests CBD that's sold in licensed dispensaries, like Torrey Holistics. "You're going to want to look for a Batch number or UID number. That ensures that we're able to match the testing results with that specific product," says Huffaker. The dispensary is hoping that the lab results will highlight the importance of researching your CBD before buying. "Everything carried in a licensed cannabis store is going to have to be verified [and] vetted by the dispensary [to be sure] it has gone through the necessary testing," adds Huffaker. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Millions of Americans are uninsured during the coronavirus pandemic, with more at risk of losing their jobs and in turn losing their healthcare coverage.A 17-year-old boy in Lancaster was reportedly denied treatment at an urgent care clinic there and instead told to go to a hospital. On the way to the hospital, he went into cardiac arrest, according to Mayor R.
