SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park is facing a setback after thieves broke into the theater.According to San Diego Police, an unknown suspect or suspects forced their way into the building between Oct. 17 and 19. The thieves ransacked two separate, secured structures on the property.A number of high-end television production systems, autographed guitars, studio cameras, and other items were stolen. “The doors were physically broken down,” said Steve Stopper, founder of Save Starlight. “There’s been a lot of vandalism and theft and they had to have been here a long, long time.”Stopper said his foundation has been working for five years to bring life back to the theater that closed down in 2012. The City of San Diego has offered support to his organization.Repairs were being completed after a tree came crashing down on the Starlight Bowl months ago, lifting asphalt in the parking lot and crushing part of the building.“This is definitely kicking us back to almost a starting point again,” said Stopper.Security cameras and alarms were turned off as repairs to the building were underway.Stopper said the items stolen were worth well over ,000. Many, including the autographed guitars, were set to be auctioned off at a gala next year in an effort to raise money for the revitalization project.“We need someone to step up and help us,” said Stopper. “We need new options for the future. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Blood Bank is asking for convalescent plasma donations from patients that have recovered from COVID-19. The plasma is used at local hospitals to help fight COVID-19. Although not a cure for the virus, the plasma has proved to be effective for some patients. The blood bank says they are running low on convalescent plasma because requests from hospitals have gone up. The process of donating takes a little more than an hour, including the check-in process. To donate plasma you must have had a positive COVID-19 test, recovered from the virus and be symptom free for 28 days. Donations are by appointment only. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The threat of coronavirus still is looming and combined with a new problem of bad air quality from west coast wildfires, means there are now more reasons to wear masks, but not all masks will protect against both.The CDC currently recommends the public wear masks with two or more layers over their nose and mouth to stop the spread of COVID-19. In regards to the particulate matter in the air because of wildfire smoke, the cloth coverings are not enough protection.“If you’re wearing a cloth mask for COVID, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re protected from those microscopic smoke particles that can still be breathed in,” said Robert Reider, Interim Director of the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, or SDAPCD.Reider said the air in Southern California has been some of the worst in the world through the past week. This is because of the multiple wildfires burning in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. The winds are pulling the smoke south and it’s settling in places like San Diego, creating hazy and unsafe conditions. Reider said the winds are expected to shift around Friday, meaning the haze should clear after that.In the meantime, Sharp Rees-Stealy physician Jyotu Sandhu said N95 masks are the best protection against wildfire smoke. He added that individuals should assess their own health when determining how seriously they need to take the smoke. People with lung or breathing issues like asthma and COPD should be more aware of the smoke.The SDAPCD issued a Wildfire Smoke Advisory because of the impacts. The air quality will range between "moderate" and "unhealthy for sensitive groups" through Thursday. Sandhu said he’s had patients asking if it’s safe to exercise in the smoke. He said if a person is healthy, they can go outside but should consider spending less time outdoors than usual. For example, if a healthy person runs outside for an hour a day, it might be smart to cut that time in half and only run for half an hour in the smoke. He said if possible, exercising indoors is safer than outside while the smoke persists. 2098

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The wife of ex-NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II has filed for divorce, months after the former footballer was convicted of rape.Janelle Winslow filed documents for divorce on Aug. 30 in San Diego, according to records. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three people were injured following a pursuit in Otay Mesa Monday afternoon.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies pulled the truck over around 2 p.m. for an unspecified traffic infraction.The driver, later identified as Christian Eduardo Saldana Medina, 26, stopped and cooperated with deputies.While deputies were checking records, Medina sped away at a “high rate of speed.” Deputies chased Medina for less than two miles before the truck ran into a tractor trailer at the corner of Pacific Rim Court and Camino Maquiladora.All three people inside the truck at the time of the crash were taken to the hospital, one by helicopter.Medina was arrested for felony evading and felony evading with injuries. A passenger, Edgar Quintana Valenzuela, 38, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia.  895
