The percentage of Americans who say they would probably or definitely get a COVID-19 vaccine when one becomes available has sharply decreased in just the last few months.A survey done in mid-September by the Pew Research Center found only 51 percent of respondents would definitely or probably get the vaccine when one became available. A similar survey done in May found 72 percent of participants would definitely or probably get the vaccine. The 21 point drop was all in the “definitely would get the vaccine” category, according to the data.According to the data, a large drop in the number of American who would get the vaccine was seen in both Republican leaning respondents and Democratic leaning.Republican participants went from 65 percent would get the vaccine in May to 44 percent in September. Participants who identified as Democratic went from 79 percent would get the vaccine in May to 58 percent in September.Large drops were seen across gender, race and ethnicity as well.“About three-quarters of Americans (77%) say it is at least somewhat likely that a vaccine for COVID-19 will be approved and used in the U.S. before it’s fully known whether it is safe and effective, including 36% who say this is very likely to happen,” Pew Research Center wrote of their findings.Of the 49 percent who would not get a vaccine, the majority of them are worried about potential side effects.Side effects are also a concern for those who would get the vaccine. Of the 51 percent who said they would probably or definitely get the vaccine, more than half said that if many people were experiencing minor side effects they would reconsider getting the vaccine.The data came from more than 10,000 Americans surveyed between September 8-13. 1748

The mother of a Florida child who was punched in the face by an adult is wondering why the man was not arrested. “He was screaming at us, cursing at us, calling us the 'n-word' and he came down to the middle of his yard, and I was like 'who are you talking too,' and he said 'come within arm's reach and I'll show you who I'm talking to,'" said Malikai Villatte, the 12-year-old boy who was punched.  A picture of Malikai after the incident showed his two front teeth were knocked out. The young boy also received stitches to heal a gash on his mouth. “When I realized my teeth were dangling in my mouth it was kind of shocking, I didn't know what was going on," Malikai said. “It was like a nightmare, I just knew I had to get there and I had to get there fast," said Malikai's mother Brittany Graham. His parents are upset because the man who punched Malikai was not arrested. Lataevion Graham, 13, says he witnessed the incident and claims Cerfalo spat on them after punching Malikai. Graham's father says he wants justice for the children. “Where it is okay for an adult to take the law into their own hands, and to strike a kid hard enough to knock out his teeth. Where is that acceptable, in what country is that acceptable?" said Larry Graham. According to a Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the man who punched Malikai was 27-year-old Vincent Cerfalo.“Originally this is where the altercation took place, right here," Cerfalo said.“I told them to back off and if they come on my property I'm going to defend myself. They said, 'you won't hit us, you won't hit us,' and they started to surround me," said Cerfalo. He says it all started when he yelled at the kids to get out of the road because they were blocking traffic.A cellphone video captured the moments after Malikai was punched. Cerfalo claims he was acting in self defense.“He touched me and I lifted my hand out, and I ended up hitting him. It was not my intention to hit anybody that hard, it was not my intention to knock teeth out or do harm, or cause any kind of trouble,” Cerfalo said.The children say no one touched Cerfalo at any time during the incident. Cerfalo says he never expected things to escalate to violence. He now plans to press charges against 12-year-old Malikai for assault, which the child’s parents can’t understand. “He's not going to jail, nothing is happening to him and he's basically getting away with it right now," Malikai said.“I want the man in jail," said Brittany Graham.  The case has been sent to the state attorney’s office, which will determine if a summons will be issued to Malikai for assault.  2750

Rick Scott signed Senate Bill 7026 into law Friday, the first gun control legislation enacted in the state after the Parkland school massacre on February 14.The NRA suit focuses on the part of the law that raises the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21 from 18."This bill punishes law-abiding gun owners for the criminal acts of a deranged individual," executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action Chris W. Cox said. "Securing our schools and protecting the constitutional rights of Americans are not mutually exclusive."Seventeen people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when a 19-year-old man with a semi-automatic military-style rifle opened fire.The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of Florida, says the age minimum section of the new law violates the second and 14th amendments of the US Constitution.The NRA argues people who are 18 years old are considered adults "for almost all purposes and certainly for the purposes of the exercise of fundamental constitutional rights."The organization also contends federal law already prevents many Americans 21 or younger from buying certain types of guns. The new romaine lettuce recall is causing many to change up their Thanksgiving Day menus.A popular vegan restaurant and catering company, Pianta, is one place affected by the recall.“We use romaine every day,” says restaurant owner Michael Moon. “We use about two to three cases of romaine every week, so it's pretty significant.”The restaurant has thrown out all of its romaine lettuce.“Essentially, we're just throwing away money,” Moon says.However, Pianta’s owner says it’s only a small cost to pay for the safety of his customers.“We don't want to be associated with some sort of outbreak here as a plant-based restaurant. It's scary.”Until further notice, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning everyone to throw out any and all romaine lettuce.
