Imagine if you found your child watching a video giving instructions on how to kill themselves. It’s a video Florida mom and pediatrician Free Hess found on YouTube. She found a similar video on YouTube Kids. Hess pushed for YouTube to remove it, and they did. “I think it's definitely difficult, maybe more now than it ever has been before,” Hess says. Mother of two, Caroline Craddock, says she's vigilant about what her kids watch even though they’re just 2 and 4 years old. “They're sometimes watching YouTube or Amazon Prime, stuff like that. And I always try to be in the room with them, so I can at least be listening to what they're watching to make sure that it's appropriate content for their ages,” Craddock says. Experts say messages from a platform like YouTube or YouTube Kids can be powerful for children. That's why Dr. Andrea Maikovich-Fond, a clinical psychologist at Kaiser Permanente, says opening up a safe and healthy dialogue with kids is the most important thing parents can do. “Letting your children know you are someone safe to come and talk to if it's something they've seen if it's an idea they have, if it's something they're concerned about in terms of their own thoughts or feelings,” Dr. Maikovich-Fond says. When it comes to tough topics like suicide, she says it's a myth that asking children if they're having those thoughts puts those ideas in their head. “We know from study after study that talking to children about how they're doing and what they're feeling, even if it's a topic as scary as suicide, actually is helpful,” Dr. Maikovich-Fond says.YouTube said in a statement that it takes feedback seriously. The company says it is currently investing in new controls for parents and making constant improvements to its systems. Still, YouTube says, "There's more work to do." 1830

In an abrupt about-face, Hillary Clinton says she will endorse her 2016 rival Bernie Sanders if he wins the Democratic nomination to face President Donald Trump in November. The former secretary of state had earlier refused to say whether she would endorse Sanders in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Tuesday, instead telling the outlet: “I'm not going to go there yet.” Clinton tweeted Tuesday night: “The number one priority for our country and world is retiring Trump, and, as I always have, I will do whatever I can to support our nominee.” The two had a bitter rivalry for the 2016 nomination. 628

Iranian state TV says a stampede at the funeral for a top general slain in a U.S. airstrike has killed 56 people and injured 213 others. Thousands of mourners had surrounded the coffin of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani in his hometown of Kerman when the crush occurred. It was unclear what set off the stampede. Online videos showed people lying lifeless on a road and others shouting and administering CPR. Soleimani's burial has been delayed, as officials have grown concerned about the large crowds that may attend.Soleimani's death has brought calls across Iran to take revenge against America, drastically raising tensions across the Middle East. In schools across America, students are practicing what to do in case there’s ever a school shooting.Active shooter drills are becoming a regular part of the school year in some places. In fact, a growing number of states now require them.On one hand, the drills can help make sure students and teachers know how to respond if there’s ever a school shooting. Students can learn where to go to stay safe or the safest evacuation routes. Drills can also help prevent someone from freezing in a moment of crisis. On the other hand, some advocates say active shooter drills can be scary and cause trauma that leads to issues, either immediately or in the future. Some research presents evidence these drills can be especially tough for people with anxiety or developmental disorders. What some researchers say is missing is studies that say these drills help save lives. Those researchers say there isn’t enough school shooting data to get reliable results.A Secret Service researcher says the approach is wrong. She was lead author on a recent report that emphasized threat assessment and prevention. The report says bullying and ostracism are two of the top sources of student distress. The report also suggested school take an “all in” approach to addressing those issues and others. That means involving everyone from teachers to administrators to mental health professionals. And while holding drills can provide peace of mind, the Secret Service says social and emotional interventions are most effective in the long term. 1533

It seems like common sense, but many Americans do it. Although remote start technology has grown, thousands of cars were stolen in 2018 due to people leaving their car unattended to warm up during the winter. One insurance group is reminding Americans not to leave their cars running unattended.According to National Insurance Crime Bureau, 81,911 vehicles were stolen with the keys or fobs left in them in 2018. "We always warn consumers about the dangers of leaving a vehicle unlocked and not taking the fob or key with them, but leaving the car running with a key or fob in the vehicle is a prime target for an opportunistic thief," said NICB Chief Operating Officer Jim Schweitzer. The NICB also reminded drivers that in many states and municipalities, leaving a car with the key in the ignition and running could be against the law. For instance, in Ohio, it is a minor misdemeanor punishable by a 0 fine to leave a car running unattended on public property (such as the side of the road). In Colorado, the crime is a class B traffic infraction, punishable with a fine of up to 0. The NICB offered the following tips: Lock the vehicle, set the alarm, and take all keys or fobs.Do not leave the garage door opener in the vehicle.Take a picture of your registration on your cell phone, and do not leave the registration or other papers with personal information in the vehicle.Never leave a car unlocked and running to warm it up or while stopping for a quick cup of coffee. It only takes a moment for the opportunistic thief to jump inside and drive off. 1575
