SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Metropolitan Transit System is increasing bus and trolley services as the economy continues to reopen.MTS will increase weekday midday service on the UC San Diego Blue Line beginning Monday, June 15, followed by service increases on dozens of bus routes in late June."As we continue the regional reopening of our economy, we know more people will need the services that MTS provides. We want people to know that San Diego's transit system will continue to be a safe and reliable option as possible," said MTS Board Chair Nathan Fletcher. "We've strengthened our already-enhanced sanitizing protocols on vehicles and at stations and implemented policies to better protect our passengers and employees. We are now increasing service to help reliability and allow for greater physical distancing of passengers."Beginning Monday, the UC San Diego Blue Line trolley -- which connects the San Ysidro international border to downtown San Diego -- will increase its service frequency to every 7 1/2 minutes from 4:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., and keep 15-minute frequencies until 9 p.m., followed by every 30 minutes until the end of the service day.Weekday ridership on the Blue Line plummeted 69% between February 24 and April 20, from 63,715 daily riders to just 19,787. Since April 20, average weekday ridership has increased 28%, topping out at 25,367 the week of June 1. More frequency will give more opportunity for passengers to practice social distancing on board and on platforms when possible. Service on the Orange Line and Sycuan Green Line will remain unchanged.While trolley service will first be increasing to closely mirror pre- COVID-19 levels, MTS is also making preparations to increase bus service in the coming weeks. Schedules and routes are being finalized. The goal is to provide service increases that meet market demands. MTS reduced weekday service levels approximately 25% on April 13 to address record-low ridership while still providing critical service for essential workers and trips.In addition to service increases, MTS says it also continues to improve its already-strict safety and sanitizing protocols. The latest development on that front is retrofitting buses with germ barriers to better protect bus operators. Barriers will also allow the agency to return to front- door boarding, which gives passengers more room in which to spread out. MTS has only allowed rear-door boarding since April 1 to protect the health of bus operators.MTS continues to operate about 95 bus routes and three trolley lines. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego has reached an agreement with two local nonprofit organizations to improve its stormwater infrastructure and local water quality, it was announced today.Under the agreement, the city pledged to improve its stormwater management sites at the Miramar Landfill, Metro Biosolids Center, North City Reclamation Plant, Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant and South Bay Water Reclamation Plant. San Diego Coastkeeper and the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation will concurrently contribute ,000 to the San Diego Audubon Society to be used for water quality improvement and habitat conservation in Mission Bay.The city's Transportation and Storm Water Department, which oversees the Storm Water Division, declined to comment on the agreement, which was approved by a federal judge last Tuesday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Lucky Duck Foundation announced a million region-wide homeless employment and jobs training initiative Friday, aiming to hire and train people experiencing homelessness to secure long-term employment.An anonymous donor gave the million gift in grants to expand existing programs and launch new ones, including culinary skills, homeless outreach, community beautification work, youth support services and intensive job training.The donor asked the foundation to focus on high-impact programs to help people on the streets.FACING IT TOGETHER: How San Diego is working to end homelessness"The Lucky Duck Foundation is honored to work with our generous donor to establish a results-oriented, best-in-class strategy for reducing homelessness," said Stephanie Kilkenny, the foundation's co-founder and president. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego County's recommended .4 billion budget for fiscal year 2020-21, which was released Monday, includes 0 million dedicated to testing, medical supplies, food distribution and other needs related to the COVID-19 public health crisis.Calling COVID-19 "the county's top budgetary priority," county leaders released a statement announcing the Health and Human Services Agency will see an increase of 0 million to support the county's Testing, Tracing and Treatment Strategy, personal protective equipment, and other resources and efforts in its pandemic response.Another million is earmarked for technological resources related to behavioral health services, including telehealth, electronic health record upgrades, outreach and engagement, workforce recruitment and retention.The COVID-19-related economic downturn also affected other sectors of the budget, with county officials expected to dip into reserves and slow or stop "non-essential services and projects" in order to address revenue shortfalls.The proposed spending plan is 9 million -- or 2.5% -- larger than the last fiscal year's budget.Budget increases include an additional .7 million to address homelessness in unincorporated county areas and 0,000 to develop a Flexible Housing Subsidy Pool to help homeless individuals move into permanent housing.
