The first day of fall is just one week away and restaurants are preparing to take another hit.“A lot of us are going into these months thinking, you know, how many more days can I survive until I have to close my restaurant?” said Kevin Boehm, a co-founder of the Boka Restaurant Group, an independent restaurant coalition.Boehm is also a restaurant owner in Chicago, where COVID-19 restrictions have slashed indoor capacity. About three quarters say they're using patio space right now and hope to continue doing so for a least a few more weeks.Outdoor dining is bringing in nearly half of their daily sales but keeping customers outside will soon get more costly.“Equipment for outdoor dining, especially when it gets cold, get expensive, be it a tent for a parking lot, be it heaters or anything like that, that starts adding up in costs,” said Mike Whatley, VP of State and Local Affairs at the National Restaurant Association.The association wants local governments to start grant programs for buying that equipment to keep temporary regulations in place that allow for more outdoor service.The coalition hopes to see increased indoor capacity for cooler months. They're also lobbying for Congress to pass the Restaurants Act, which would create a 0 billion grant program for independent restaurants.Boehm says there could be rolling closures through the winter.“By the time we get to next summer, we're going to be looking at a much smaller array of restaurants, a lot less choices, a lot more chains, and the independent restaurant is going to be an endangered species,” said Boehm.The National Restaurant Association says owners that are innovative are the ones that will make it through this crisis. 1849
The global pandemic has changed what “work” looks like for millions of people, and those changes could become permanent, according to workplace and hiring experts.In a report from Glassdoor looking at job trends in 2021 they remind people that moments of crisis, like the coronavirus pandemic, can present risks and opportunities.Some companies have already announced long-term work-from-home opportunities, are embracing mental health and culture-building initiatives, and are scaling back in-person meetings and positions that are in-person focused.Part of the report focused on jobs Glassdoor predicts will either not exist or will be drastically different in the future because of the pandemic.In 2021, lower-skilled service jobs, education jobs, administrative office roles, sales roles and discretionary healthcare jobs could start disappearing. These findings are based on job listings from October 2019 to October 2020, and noticing trends of decreasing job postings during the pandemic that do not show signs of bouncing back.Some of those jobs specifically include beauty consultants, valets, pet groomers, event coordinators, executive assistants, receptionists, sales product demonstrators, product or brand ambassadors and even sales managers.In education, the higher ed system “is facing an overwhelming financial crisis due to falling enrollment and mandated campus closures, and these jobs may not return for a long time.” That includes college professors and instructors, according to Glassdoor.In healthcare, while frontline workers like doctors and nurses are in high demand, other positions are not as some health needs are being postponed or canceled altogether. Jobs for audiologists, opticians and physical therapists are all down.They do predict that jobs like nursing, warehouse worker and e-commerce sector jobs will continue to increase in number in 2021.This lines up with a recent report from the World Economic Forum that predicted about 85 million jobs around the world would become obsolete by 2025 because of the rapid change to automation and remote work during the pandemic.The WEF report also focused on jobs that will rise in the wake of the pandemic. According to the report, by 2025, roles and jobs that leverage human skills will rise in demand.Machines will primarily be focused on information and data processing, administrative tasks and routine manual jobs.The WEF says emerging professions in the next several years will be in data and artificial intelligence, content creation and cloud computing. They also say employers will be looking for these top skills among their employees: analytical thinking, creativity and flexibility.The report from Glassdoor also looked at workplace benefits and initiatives that employees will begin to expect from an employer post-pandemic and how salaries could be impacted by permanent work-from-home changes. 2898

The city manager for Alameda, California, said a formal investigation is underway following the arrest of a man dancing in a street as part of his exercise routine.The man, Mali Watkins, was charged with resisting arrest. Why he was arrested in the first place is unclear.On May 23, two officers from Alameda Police approached the man after police received a report that a man was dancing in the street. When police arrived, they discovered Mali dancing in the street.When asked why he was dancing, Mali stated it was part of his exercise routine.After Mali began to walk away, videos show officers grabbing Mali by the wrist and detaining him. Mali was told if he resisted, he would be charged with resisting arrest, which is what happened.The city of Alameda said that the man is a resident of the city and is African American.“At this time, I do not know the reasons why the initial officers approached the call the way they did. I am hopeful that an investigation will provide better understanding to that question,” City Manager Eric Levitt said.In the last few days, the city has released body warn camera footage from the incident, in addition to a call into the police’s non-emergency line. The E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce has sickened 43 people in 12 states, the US Food and Drug Administration said Monday.The FDA said that the ongoing outbreak is linked to the "end of season" harvest in some parts of California -- but the agency still says people should not eat any romaine lettuce.People have become sick in California, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Wisconsin.An additional 22 people in Canada are also ill, so the FDA is coordinating its investigation with the Canadian health and food safety authorities, the agency said.When the outbreak was announced last week, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned consumers to stay away from all romaine lettuce, but the FDA said the investigation was focused on California and Mexico."Over the Thanksgiving holiday, the FDA continued to investigate the outbreak," according to a statement from FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb. "Our investigation at this point suggests that romaine lettuce associated with the outbreak comes from areas of California that grow romaine lettuce over the summer months, and that the outbreak appears to be related to 'end of season' romaine lettuce harvested from these areas. The involved areas include the Central Coast growing regions of central and northern California."Lettuce growing and harvesting in the winter months is taking place in California and Arizona's desert regions and Florida, as well as Mexico. Currently, the FDA investigation does not implicate lettuce from any of these areas.While the romaine supply undergoes a "clean break" to ensure all the contaminated lettuce is effectively gone from the market, the FDA has asked producers and distributors to provide clear labeling with the lettuce's date and origin in the future.A task force within the lettuce industry has also been established to determine better solutions for labeling long-term in order to help with tracing."Based on discussions with major producers and distributors, romaine lettuce entering the market will now be labeled with a harvest location and a harvest date," Gottlieb said. "Romaine lettuce entering the market can also be labeled as being hydroponically or greenhouse grown. If it does not have this information, you should not eat or use it."If consumers, retailers and food service facilities are unable to identify that romaine lettuce products are not affected -- which means determining that the products were grown outside the California regions that appear to be implicated in the current outbreak investigation -- we urge that these products not be purchased, or if purchased, be discarded or returned to the place of purchase."Symptoms of E. coli infection, which usually begin about three or four days after consuming the bacteria, can include watery or bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, according to the CDC.
