New security measures were enforced as students of Santa Fe High School in Texas returned for the new school year Monday. The security changes come after a student opened fire on May 18, killing 10 students. The most noticeable security addition: metal detectors. Other renovations at the high school include the installation of bullet-proof glass, a secure entrance vestibule and even panic buttons in the classrooms. Interior doors were upgraded to lock from the inside and outside and 500 security cameras were installed district wide. Additionally, the school hired extra police offers, five of which will work fulltime.“Well, it's a very typical reaction from what we’ve seen in a lot of schools in the wake of spring of ’18,” says Amy Klinger.Klinger, a school safety expert with The Educator’s School Safety Network, says on one hand she’s glad to see more schools like Santa Fe investing in new measures, but she cautions money also needs to be spent on the teachers, too.“Are we combining buying stuff with actually training people?” asks Klinger. “Probably a single point of entry is a good idea, but not if you haven't provided people with training on how to screen visitors who are coming in.”Since teachers themselves are the first line of defense, The Educators School Safety Network is urging all schools to consider training faculty to better recognize out of ordinary behavior.“We know that anywhere between 80 to 85 percent of all perpetrators are students in that school, so who is working with those students? Educators,” says Klinger. “So, we need to invest in those people that see those kids every single day and to give them tools and resources and training to be able to pick up on students who are at risk.” 1739

Nine undocumented immigrants were detained Thursday after a small panga boat landed in Laguna Beach, California, according to police.Seven people who came off the boat were detained, the Laguna Beach Police Department said, in addition to 2 drivers who were in what police described as "take-away" vehicles waiting to pick the migrants up.All 9 are undocumented, according a spokesman for the US Customs and Border Patrol, and their countries of origin are unknown.A panga is a boat often used for working off the coast of Mexico or Central America, according to the US Coast Guard. The engine-powered vessels are typically 25 to 45 feet long. They're also popular for smuggling, according to Theron Francisco, a border patrol spokesman.Laguna Beach police said there were actually a total of 13 individuals who came ashore in the boat. The department shared a video on its Twitter page that appeared to be shot from a nearby balcony, showing the group pulling the panga boat out of the surf before making their way up the beach.Similar incidents played out in the area earlier this year.On June 19, another panga boat came ashore in Crystal Cove State Park, just north of Laguna Beach, police said in a press release at the time. Four men were detained by CBP following a multi-agency search of the area, Laguna Beach police said. And in May, 10 undocumented immigrants were arrested after their panga boat came ashore in La Jolla outside San Diego, according to CNN affiliate KGTV.Thursday's detentions took place as thousands of Central American migrants seeking asylum in the United States are waiting in the Mexican border city of Tijuana. 1680

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (KGTV) – A Massachusetts mother is speaking out after her son with autism received what she is calling a “disrespectful” award from his teachers, according to WCVB. Desiree Perez told the station her sixth-grade son Kelvin received the award for “Most likely to get lost in a crowd.” The award was reportedly signed by five teachers. The teacher at Normandin Middle School apologized to the mother, but told her teachers already left for summer vacation and that nothing could be done, according to WCVB. "I didn't think it was funny. My son didn't find it funny, either," Perez said. "He said, why was the teacher giving him this award? Because he was never lost in school." 703

NEW YORK (AP) — Fans have remembered John Lennon on the 40th anniversary of the former Beatle's death with flowers, candles and songs in New York's Central Park. In the Strawberry Fields section steps from where he was shot, musicians played Tuesday. Photos of Lennon and other memorabilia ringed the inlaid "Imagine" mosaic. Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono, posted on social media an image of Lennon's bloody eyeglasses and listed the number of people she said has been killed by guns in the U.S. since his death. Living bandmates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr both made posts with images of them in their younger days with Lennon."A sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world. I will always be proud and happy to have known and worked with this incredible Scouser! X love Paul," McCartney tweeted. 843
