SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Many Americans say cell phone are their lifelines. But what happens when yours breaks? Whether for convenience or for price, third-party repair shops are the choice for many customers. Unfortunately, some Apple users with the latest phones say they're not able to go to third-party shops. Four years ago, Christopher McQueen said he found the perfect niche business. “People are always breaking their phones, late at night,” McQueen said.He is the owner of Mobile Cell Doctors. Any brand, any phone, any version. He will come to you and fix your phone.“To be able to fix your phone in 10 minutes, versus a 3-hour fiasco at Apple, it was a need that was definitely there,” McQueen said. He said he can fix any hardware problems, except on the most recent iPhone models - iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X.Just recently, iPhone 8 user Lucas Peckham went to McQueen to get his broken screen replaced. His choices were 0 with McQueen or 9 at the Apple Store. He chose the cheaper, more convenient option.Peckham said everything was flawless until one morning, he woke up to a phone with a frozen screen. He could not swipe, touch, type, or do anything with his device. Peckham said it happened after his phone automatically updated overnight, installing the Apple 11.3 Software.McQueen said he was suddenly inundated with calls from all of his previous iPhone 8 customers. “It’s been a nightmare,” McQueen said. He said he had fixed about 100 iPhone 8’s in the last six months. He suggested to his customers, to do what they hoped to avoid by going to him in the first place - go to the Apple Store. But Peckham said, when he showed Apple the problem, he was told, because he previously used a third-party repairman, they could not repair it. Instead, he had to replace it with a brand new screen for 0 - or buy a whole new phone. “I totally felt screwed,” Peckham said. With no other option, Peckham said he gave in, spending six hours at the Apple Store, and paying up the 0. “It was basically a way for Apple to create kind of a monopoly on the iPhone screen,” Peckham said. Last month, California became the 18th state to introduce a “Right to Repair” Bill, which would require electronics manufacturers to make repair information and parts available to owners and third-party repair shops.McQueen hopes this legislation passes, so mom-and-pop business owners like him also get to have a piece of the pie. “I would love to fix those,” McQueen said. “But until they release the software to run the phones that would allow third-parties to work on those devices, we can’t fix them.”10News spoke to Apple, who said they do work with Authorized third-party dealers that are not Apple Stores. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)---San Diego Fire Department recruiter Captain Jason Shanley reminds people all the time, "If you don’t see it it’s hard for you to know that you can be it."As the department's only full-time recruiter he spends his days making connections, trying to show not only kids but adults that being a firefighter is possible, no matter who they are or where they come from."The narrative is that tall white guys with mustaches are the ones that become firefighters and that’s just not true," saidShanley.Take Captain Shanley for instance. His path to the fire department was paved by members of an organization called Brothers United, a group of African American firefighters in San Diego."I started taking some classes, met some other firefighters, got a mentor and then here I am 20 years later," Shanely said.His passion for what he does and desire to share it made him a perfect fit when the department created the full time recruiting position four years ago."As a department, we really wanted to focus more specifically on and make an actual effort to recruit more diversity into our fire department," he explained.Captain Shanley says some of the biggest obstacles are simply educating people on what it takes to become a firefighter. And once they do know, then trying to help them get the training they need.EMT schools are spread out all over San Diego County; hard to get to for those in the middle of the city without transportation."So we're working to try to bring some of those classes and resources to be more centrally located so we can solve that equity issue and that’s part of what we’re doing in the department as we speak," said Shanley.While there is still work to do, Captain Shanley says it's important the department has someone like him dedicated to hiring staff representative of the community it serves."I want other people to know this is something you can do, it’s more than just a job, it’s a career." 1950
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- San Diego County barely avoided falling back into the purple tier of the state’s reopening system, staying in the red for now.The color-coded tier system has been difficult for many business owners to deal with as they wonder if they will face more restrictions in the coming weeks.“We are working with the state to share our concerns and thoughts about the metrics they are using to put our county in the different tiers,” said Greg Cox, San Diego County Supervisor. "The reality is we remain at risk of being moved to the more restrictive tier in the future if we don’t do those things that we know we need to do.”Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, said she and other health officers across the state have been pushing for the state to improve its metrics system to go beyond case rate and positivity rate.She would like to see three things happen.“If counties are maintaining hospitalizations and hospital capacities to somehow get credit for that, and also get credit for contact tracing,” she said.Wooten said the county should also get credit for providing access to COVID-19 testing in vulnerable communities hit the hardest.“San Diego has done an excellent job to date of getting access to testing in those communities that are hit the hardest,” she said.On Tuesday, the County Board of Supervisors passed a motion in a 4 to 1 vote to send a letter to the state backing Wooten’s effort in revising the reopening criteria.Wooten is urging members of the public to continue wearing a facial covering, washing hands, avoiding large gatherings, and staying home when sick, especially as flu season is on the way.“We do not have a vaccine for COVID-19, but we have a vaccine for the flu,” she said. “Getting the flu vaccine is the most important step in preventing the flu.” 1822

Many are desperately looking for qualified tutors as families safely go back to school. But we found that the demand for tutors is not matching up with what is currently available.As the start of the distance-learning school year approaches, parents are beginning to feel the pressure."Desperate," parent, Cortney Lemos-Crawford laughed. "Desperate because of my own sanity!"Lemos-Crawford says she and her husband are fortunate to still have their jobs during the pandemic. But it is demanding. Distance learning for their 8-year-old daughter in March was not easy."It's very difficult, as you can imagine, to work full-time and have your child present, let alone present and needing your interaction," she said.She says it was hard for her daughter to concentrate at home, in a relaxing environment, with toys all around. She also does not want her daughter's formative years to suffer because of her own work schedule. So for weeks, she has been searching for a personal tutor.Jamie Evans and her partner Hannah Obradovich are former teachers who now run Ignite Learning Center in La Jolla. They provide K through 12 and Special education support around the county."We have been inundated with parents wanting us to form 'Pandemic pods,' garage groups, working outside, working with small groups with different age children to hire us to be their teachers," Evans said.But Evans says the supply of accredited teachers and tutors are not even close to the recent demand from desperate parents."We are in a rush to hire more teachers," Evans said. "I already talked to three people this morning, and I'm going to an interview right now."Lemos-Crawford says her tutor search so far has come up empty."I've had a couple of leads, but those people have been snatched up," she said.But she is not giving up. San Diego (KGTV)- For many people who live on a fixed income buying groceries may be a challenge. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount.
