SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students and staff at Coleman University are rushing to gather documents and information to move forward with their degrees and careers before the university shuts down August 5.Each person who walks through the reflective double doors with their own story, "I was going to graduate in 10 weeks," Ryan O'Shaughnessy said."I would've liked this to be my final job, this is an amazing place," Graphic Designer Andrea O'Briant said. "I've got a baby on the way."He said he needs this degree more now than ever to help provide for his family."I've already put in two and a half years, you know unless there's a situation where a lot of my credits won't transfer," O'Shaughnessy said.Vice President of Coleman University Bruce Gilden says students will find out their options very soon."Thursday from 10 am to 7 p.m., Coleman University is hosting a number of institutions that have programs similar to those programs at Coleman and to which Coleman students can transfer their credits."Gilden said many students have come to him anxious about what happens next and if their degree dissolves into thin air."We've had a number of alumni approach us, wondering whether now that Coleman is closing their degree means something and I can tell them absolutely it does," Gilden said, reminding them the school closed solely for financial reasons.Students told 10News they wish they knew ahead of time what was happening. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sick and tired over school shootings, a Point Loma High School junior is trying to make change through one of his passions.He participated in Public Service Announcement contest, a collaboration between San Diego Crime Stoppers and the San Diego Unified School District Police Department. Students were required to create a PSA about an issue schools deal with, like bullying or substance abuse.Tim Fraher's 40-second PSA addressed school shootings, raising awareness about the ways it's easier to get a gun than a driver's license. He also wants people to take notice if a friend or classmate is getting bullied or seems depressed.Fraher says he wants people to take school shootings seriously."We need to do something. We can't just sit around and pray that it will go away because it won't. We need to actually get out there and actively reform and make changes so that this won't happen," said Fraher.Fraher won the competition, and his PSA will air on television in the San Diego region this June. "It felt good to know that the message will get across, that it will be out there," said Fraher.He hopes the 40-second message will encourage others to take a chance at making a change. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SDG&E has gained full control of a gas leak that prompted evacuations and shut down SR-163 and Friars Road throughout the day Wednesday. All evacuations were lifted and roadways in the area reopened just before 8 p.m. following daylong evacuations and closures. Crews said they would begin assessing damage and working to fix the gas line overnight Wednesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Scripps Health in San Diego is inundated with calls from people who are worried that they might have the coronavirus.“Understandably, people are now getting upper respiratory infections and right away they're thinking is this COVID-19 so they're calling the line and we're giving them the help that they need,” says Dr. David Wetherhold.The hospital network's dedicated COVID-19 nurse line is reportedly peaking at 60 calls every 15 minutes, connecting patients to nurses for screenings. If a nurse believes that a phone call warrants a video call and the video call warrants actual testing, the nurse will assign the patient a time to park outside one of the cabanas now staged outside three of the Scripps Health clinics. The patient will then call in. “A single licensed provider will come out to your car [and] do an evaluation. They'll check your blood pressure. They'll check your temperature. They'll check your pulse and your oxygenation level and then they will obtain the COVID-19 sample which is a swab into the nose,” adds Wetherhold.Wetherhold says COVID-19 test results come back in two to four days. Positive patients will only need to return for treatment if their symptoms are unmanageable. He's also working vigorously on Scripps Health’s larger telehealth program. It was supposed to roll out over the next 18 months, but with COVID-19, it's been compressed into a few weeks. Wetherhold tells 10News that patients who are considered "at risk" are in desperate need of virtual care so that they can avoid any potential exposure to COVID-19. “The immunocompromised, transplant patients, heart failure patients or cancer patients. [They’re] going to be our initial focus [with] trying to get them the care they need remotely without bringing them out into the community," Wetherhold said.Scripps Health’s nurse line is 888-261-8431 and is staffed from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.The cabanas are located outside Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines, Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Coastal Medical Center Vista and are only available to patients directed there through the nurse line. 2189
