SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego marijuana supporters are being invited to legally celebrate 4-20 at an Embarcadero Park festival but organizers remind attendees that smoking in public remains illegal.Legal weed supporters will gather in Embarcadero Park North for Bayked?SD, a festival meant to celebrate marijuana and the unique holiday with educational seminars and various musical acts."Regardless of the origin of 4-20, it now marks a community celebration of a makeshift holiday where friends gather to enjoy life and spread the feel-good (sp) vibes year after year," organizers wrote online.RELATED: City of Chula Vista gives legal marijuana sales the green lightFestival organizers cautioned there will be no marijuana products of any kind sold on the premises, noting while it's legal to smoke marijuana in California it's not legal to smoke in public.A variety of cannabis brand vendors will be in attendance and sessions to provide education on recreational marijuana will be held.An insider with the festival told 10News that organizers will incorporate a combination of pre-event and on-site precautions to deter marijuana consumption.Organizers will remind attendees on-site and through email prior to the event that marijuana is not allowed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Metropolitan Transit System officials say ridership spiked in the first quarter of the 2020 fiscal year by more than a million trips compared to the same time last year.From July through September of 2019, 22,258,345 trips were taken on an MTS trolley or bus. In 2018, MTS saw 21,313,801 trips. It's a 4.4% rise from one year to the next."It's encouraging," says MTS Chair Nathan Fletcher.MTS officials say a heavy focus on investment over the past few years is starting to pay off. They recently completed a million plan to streamline services and add frequency to many bus routes. They also added the South Bay Rapid route from Otay Mesa to Downtown and expanded the Rapid Superloop service in the University City area."As we add those services where folks want them, as we squeeze every dime we can get out of our existing budget, as we make a full commitment to engage the community in what they want, people will use it," says Fletcher.The surge in riders helps MTS buck a nationwide trend where public transportation is on the decline.Even in San Diego, year-to-year numbers had been dropping for four straight years, since hitting a record high in 2015 (see chart above).Fletcher says it's a positive step as the city tries to meet strict climate goals that require a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.Recently, SANDAG put out a plan to increase transit ridership to 10%. That sparked a debate over how much money should go towards transit vs. road construction.Fletcher says any money spent on transit also benefits drivers."Every person who chooses transit is one less car driving," he says. "The individual who says, 'I'm always gonna drive,' should support transit because that means less congestion. Less congestion means less toxic pollution and less greenhouse gas emissions. Gavin Newsom's office on Monday, asking that comedy clubs in San Diego be allowed to reopen safely.The letter requests that performances be allowed to reopen in outdoor settings, with shows lasting no longer than an hour."We're not talking about concerts here where thousands of people are sitting next to each other," Cate said. "These are performances that are done while folks and individuals are having dinner in a restaurant setting, properly distanced, why should they be treated any differently?"Earlier this month, some comedy clubs, like The Comedy Palace in Kearney Mesa, moved their comedy shows outdoors, only to find out they were in violation of public health orders and made to stop.George Salek, co-owner of The Comedy Place, said they have a lot of outdoor space, and people were able to observe social distancing."Eighty people is what we're trying to put in 5,000 square feet," he said. "It's really safe."Cate said San Diego's entertainment industry is an important part of the economy."I think anyone who can fit the confines of what we want to have done," Cate said.
