Judah Samet was around 6 or 7 when he watched as a Nazi soldier put a gun to his mother's head, simply because she spoke without being spoken to while on a train headed to Auschwitz. On Saturday, the 80-year-old Holocaust survivor, watched as a gunman mowed down his friends at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania."It just never ends. It's never completely safe for Jews. It's in the DNA. Not just America's DNA but the world's," Samet told CNN.Samet was running four minutes behind on Saturday, although he is almost never late to synagogue. When he arrived, he could hear bullets flying flying from a gunman inside his place of worship. He could see the man who would be charged with a hate crime for killing 11 people inside his place of worship. 770

LA JOLLA, Calif. (CNS) - Thousands of University of California service workers are expected to begin a three-day strike Monday at campuses and medical facilities across the state, including at UC San Diego's Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla.Service workers represented by Local 3299 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees voted overwhelmingly last month to authorize a strike if no progress were made in negotiations.UC officials have repeatedly criticized the union for calling the strike, accusing it of rejecting an offer of "fair, multi-year wage increases and excellent medical and retirement benefits."In light of the impasse, the university system last month imposed contract terms on the union for the 2017-18 fiscal year, including 2 percent pay increases. The UC's latest contract offer to the union included annual 3 percent raises over the next four years, according to the university. The union denounced the move to impose contract terms, responding by issuing a notice of a strike set to last until Wednesday."We've bargained in good faith for over a year to address the widening income, racial and gender disparities that front-line, low-wage workers at UC are living every day," AFSCME Local 3299 President Kathryn Lybarger said. "Instead of joining us in the effort to arrest these trends, UC has insisted on deepening them -- leaving workers no option but to strike."UC officials said in a statement that they "strongly disagree with AFSCME's decision to strike, which will negatively impact patients, students and the UC community.""We are doing everything in our power to limit disruptions on our campuses and medical centers to ensure our patients get the care they need and our students the services they deserve," according to the UC.The UC insisted that its service workers -- including custodians, gardeners, food service workers and facilities maintenance staff -- are compensated at or above the market rate, "and in some cases, by as much as 17 percent higher than comparable jobs."The university Monday said it currently pays workers anywhere between just over ,000 for food service to more than 1,000 for a respiratory therapist.University officials said the union is demanding a 6 percent annual wage increase, "which is twice what other UC employees have received."They said their final offer included, in addition to the pay raises, a lump-sum payment upon contract ratification, health benefits consistent with those of other workers and continuation of pension benefits for existing employees. New employees would be given a choice between a pension or a 401(K)-style retirement plan.Lybarger, however, accused the university of "subverting" the bargaining process by imposing contract terms on workers. 2787

LA JOLLA (CNS) - The city of San Diego will close Children's Pool beach Saturday in preparation of harbor seal pupping season, city officials announced Friday. The city began closing the beach in 2014, spurred by environmental activists concerned that beachgoers were disturbing the young pinnipeds. The city has been tied up in litigation for most of the time since then, dealing with suits from a group called Friends of the Children's Pool and other beach access advocates who claimed the closures violated the state Coastal Act and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.In June of this year, a state appeals court ruled in favor of the city, allowing the closures to continue. At the time, beach access advocates threatened to take the complaint to the state Supreme Court, but the matter hasn't moved that far yet.The city opened the beach in 1932 as a refuge for inexperienced swimmers due to a seawall that keeps out oncoming ocean waves. Harbor seals began convening on the beach in the 1990s and have since used the relatively calm beach area to birth and raise seal pups. California Coastal Commission officials have also suggested that the water is unsafe due to the seals and their excrement, offering another reason for residents to stay away from the beach for the next several months. The beach will be closed through May 15, 2019 to accommodate the seals and their pups. City park rangers and lifeguards will monitor the beach throughout the rest of winter and the duration of spring to keep both members of the public and local wildlife safe. 1567

La Jolla residents are beyond frustrated after yet another truck got stuck on one of its busiest streets, a problem they thought the city fixed last week. The latest incident happened Saturday, when a delivery truck got trapped trying to turn up steep Hillside Drive from busy Torrey Pines Road. The truck jutted out into Torrey Pines Road, blocking one lane. "I am completely flabbergasted," La Jolla resident Diane Kane said. "Clearly whatever they did, it was not effective."The city recently installed a cross gutter at the base of Hillside Drive, which residents say made the problem worse. On May 6, it took a second, more powerful tow truck to free a truck that had been lodged at the intersection for hours. Residents complained to the city, which dispatched crews to smooth out the asphalt on Torrey Pines Road to make it more flush with the cross-gutter. However, that only helped make it easier for cars and light trucks to get up and down without bottoming out. A city spokesman said warning signs telling large trucks to avoid the intersection would remain. “City staff are in the process of assessing the intersection to see what additional remedies, if any, can be implemented to help with this problem," city spokesman Alec Phillipp said. "We continue to direct commercial trucks to abide by the signage in the area stating that trucks shall not be using this intersection.”Kane said residents want the city to improve its signage and alert directional apps to instruct trucks to avoid the area. 1519
