From housing to food to health care, everything is getting more expensive while wages stay mostly stagnant. It’s part of a phenomenon called inflation and it has a direct impact on each of us.As the old cliché goes, ‘a dollar doesn’t get you what it used to.’ That saying helps explain the role inflation plays in the economy.Inflation happens when general prices go up, relative to supply. It causes a noticeable and continuous decline in buying power. It’s easy to confuse inflation with general market forces. Like, when kale prices go up because of fad-driven demand or when sweater prices increase just before winter.A small amount of inflation is supposed to help the economy by encouraging spending and investment. But too much of it could send the economy into a spiral. For that reason, the Federal Reserve takes different actions meant to keep inflation rates in check.Inflation isn’t an obscure technical financial term found in college textbooks. It directly affects everyone who participates in the economy.Let’s say a person decided to save in 1970 for use 50 years in the future. Back then, then money could buy about 17 dozen eggs, 28 gallons of gas, or one pair of Wrangler Jeans. But in 2020, the saved money doesn’t go as far.According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2020 can buy about seven dozen eggs, four gallons of gas, or a half-pair of Wranglers.Inflation gets a bad rap. Everyone would like to buy nice things for cheap. But economists say that’s just not how it works. When prices fall, in general, incomes also have to fall.Think of it as a cycle: a consumer buys from a business. If prices are lower, the business makes less money. That means wages have to drop, giving workers less money to spend as consumers. 1762

GREAT FALLS — The dim glow of a scented candle illuminating holiday cards is a sight that can be found in many homes during the holidays - but can quickly lead to one much less festive."We see a couple candle fires every year,” said Great Falls Fire Marshal Mike McIntosh. Candles are one of several holiday traditions Great Falls Fire Rescue reminds people to think about."Make sure that if you're using a candle you don't put it near anything that could ignite and (catch) on fire. The other thing we would also recommend is, any time that you leave the room or that you go to bed at night that you make sure that you extinguish that candle,” McIntosh said.Next up, holiday lights. "Make sure that your Christmas lights are not damaged, frayed or look like they've been cut in any way. If they are, make sure you throw those away and go out and buy some new ones,” McIntosh said. "Also, regarding Christmas lights, we want people to know that there are some lights that are designed for indoor use and outdoor use and some that are only designed for either or. So make sure you know which type of use of lights that you have."GFFR also recommends using a surge protector and plugging it directly into a wall. Plugging several surge protectors together is just asking for trouble. If you've got a live Christmas tree in your house, don't let it dry out and become a tinderbox. "Make sure that you water it every day and that you out fresh water in the base,” McIntosh explained.Good advice to keep your holiday spirit up and keep your holiday from going up in flames.Get more holiday safety tips at the National Fire Protection Association website, including this overview:Winter holiday fire factsElectrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in almost half of home Christmas tree fires.More than two of every five (42%) home Christmas tree fires started in the living room. Halloween in Salem, Massachusetts, will look a lot different this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.City officials announced last week that stricter guidelines were going in place to prevent large gatherings in the "Witch City."According to CBS Boston, businesses will shut down early, the city will triple fines over Halloween weekend, and streets will be closed. The city canceled Halloween festivities back in early October due to health and safety concerns, city officials said. 492

HENDERSON, Nev. – Thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump packed an indoor venue in Nevada on Sunday, with no apparent social distancing in place and very few people wore masks. The rally was met with criticism by many, because it was in open defiance of the state’s regulations and the Trump administration’s own coronavirus pandemic health guidelines. The state’s Democratic governor, Steve Sisolak, slammed Trump for his rally. In a statement, he said the president’s “reckless and selfish actions” put countless lives in danger.“The president appears to have forgotten that this country is still in the middle of a global pandemic,” said Sisolak. “Early on in this crisis, when it came time to exhibit real leadership and make difficult decisions to protect the American people, he failed to develop a unified national response strategy. To put it bluntly: he didn’t have the guts to make tough choices – he left that to governors and the states. Now he’s decided he doesn’t have to respect our state’s laws. As usual, he doesn’t believe the rules apply to him.”During his rally, the president encouraged people to vote and took a jab at the state's AB 4 law, which requires every registered voter in the state to receive a mail-in ballot while also requiring day-of polling locations to be open."You can send your ballot and then you have to check your ballots counted because they might not count your ballot in this state," said Trump. "They might not count your ballot."Both of Trump's voting-related claims are not substantiated. The president also touted the pre-pandemic economy and unemployment numbers."Before the virus, we quickly achieved the lowest unemployment rate in Nevada's history and we'll soon be there again," he said. While COVID-19 cases are on a downward trend in Nevada, the state's unemployment remains one of the highest in the country. Also Sunday night, Democratic nominee Joe Biden released a new ad alleging the president called fallen war veterans suckers and losers remark the president has repeatedly denied making.Joe Biden is taking a very different approach to the campaign than Trump, only recently beginning to make public appearances, wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. The Democratic nominee slammed the president saying, "Nevadans don't need more bluster from the president, and don't need his reckless rallies."This story was originally published by staff at KTNV. 2438
