SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's survival of the fittest once again for gyms and fitness centers across the county as San Diego braces for stricter pandemic-related restrictions that go into effect Saturday.One gym preparing for the big shift is major chain 24 Hour Fitness. While members can't choose from their dozens of locations to workout, seven county locations will be open and offering outdoor equipment to members."We're committed to staying outdoors, staying safe, and the well-being of our members is the priority," said 24 Hour Fitness district manager John Amato.Amato told ABC 10News that member visits will be reservation based with 90-minute windows, minimized to 57 guests at a time.While many prepared for what's to come, others like gym owner Tom Green of Green Speed Training in Eastlake did the opposite. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In preparation for one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is planning security upgrades to its airfield perimeter fence.10News discovered it’s one of nine large-scale construction projects that Miramar will be doing over the next decade."These construction projects here are what enables, that is what brings our national defense policy and strategy to reality," said Public Works Officer Lt. Commander Travis Brinkman.Currently being built in the heart of MCAS Miramar is a 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s.It's the first of three hangars planned for the location."The need to provide modern facilities as well as the F-35 has specific requirements, specific systems that need different maintenance, different capabilities within the facility itself to provide that maintenance,” said Brinkman. For people needing to renew their license like Debby Herscovitz, they had to plans months in advance, “I went online, booked an appointment, but I had no idea it was going to be in March”. Herscovitz got a notification from the DMV in the mail to renew her license back in December and immediately tried to make an appointment. She tells us the first available time slot was at the end of March, “I absolutely had no idea it was going to take that long”. A DMV representative tells 10News, drivers are trying to avoid the hours long line at the DMV by making an appointment online. Because so many people are scheduling appointments, the appointments are filling up faster than ever before. For Herscovitz, her appointment would have taken a total of 15 minutes to get her Real ID, however she didn’t have all the necessary documents. The DMV tells 10News to help people adjust to the new requirements and be prepared for their appointments they have a video people can watch before they make the trip in. Despite having to plan months in advance, the DMV says it’s still the best idea to schedule an appointment online before heading to a nearby office. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In October, members of ICE, CBP and USBP held a meeting with several organizations in San Diego, telling them the Department of Homeland Security would be ending a policy known as “safe release.”That’s according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by the County of San Diego against Kirstjen Nelson, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.The policy of safe release had been in place since at least 2009. Under it, ICE would work with asylum seekers who had made it legally across the border to connect with family or sponsors in the United States. ICE officials would coordinate transportation as well, making sure the migrants made it to their final destinations.At the meeting in October, federal authorities notified Jewish Family Service and the San Diego Rapid Response Network that ICE would no longer be providing that service.“When that policy ended we quickly began to notice there were moms and children being dropped off at the bus stations here in San Diego,” said Michael Hopkins, CEO of Jewish Family Service. “We realized pretty quickly that we needed to create some type of shelter so that we didn’t have families sleeping on our sidewalks and adding to our homelessness problem in San Diego.”Since October, Hopkins estimates they’ve helped nearly 12,000 migrants in San Diego.On average, they take in 50 to 100 people per day, but it can fluctuate.“Last week we had nights when it was over 200,” said Hopkins.The shelter has moved around several times, but in March, the County announced it would allow the Rapid Response Network to operate the shelter out of the former family courthouse in Downtown San Diego.The operation has cost about .3 million, according to the County.It’s come from a mix of donations and money given to the county by the state.In a statement from DHS, officials told 10News, “until Congress acts to address the obvious drivers of the crisis and gives the Department the proper resources, we will continue to refine and adapt our processes to address our many priority missions to the best of our abilities.” 2083
