Under the test program, customers will be able to order their groceries via the Fry's Food Store app and website and have them delivered to their home by one of Nuro’s ten unmanned Toyota Prius vehicles.Each vehicle will deliver the groceries to a home’s curbside and can deliver up to 15 bags of groceries, said Pam Giannonatti, corporate affairs manager with Kroger.HOW SAFE IS IT?“Safety is Nuro’s top priority. They are relentlessly focused on ensuring their vehicles are not just good neighbors, but among the safest on the road,” Kroger said in a statement. “Their vehicles and the autonomy systems undergo extensive testing including a wide range of critical safety scenarios that require immediate response to prevent harm.”During the test, Kroger said each vehicle would have a safety test driver with it.HOW DOES IT WORK?Starting Thursday, Aug. 16, those living within the 85257 zip code can order groceries from the Fry’s Food app or website, https://www.frysfood.com.They can be delivered by one of Nuro’s vehicles that same day or the next day depending on availability.The delivery fee is .95 per order. (KGTV) - Plans to add development around the Carlton Oaks Country Club golf course have neighbors arguing over the idea.The owner of Carlton Oaks submitted plans to the city that would add 71 single-family homes, 172 condo-style homes, a five-story hotel and event center, and a senior assisted living center to the area around the golf course. It would also redesign the course to make room for all the new development.Many of the single-family homes would be along the west end of the area along Inverness Road. Some people who live there say that the area can't handle more homes."They'd put houses right here, right behind my home," says Augie Scalzitti, who has lived in Santee for 41 years. "My shower is right over here. I could reach out and say, hey buddy, hey neighbor, hand me the soap, will ya!"Scalzitti says he's worried about losing his view of the golf course and the river. But he's also worried that the homes would be built in the 100-year flood plain. And he says adding homes would make traffic in the area unmanageable."No matter what they do, no matter what they promise, they could double the size of the freeway and the on-ramp, and it still wouldn't alleviate the problem," he says.Other neighbors on the street disagree. They say that kind of development is precisely what Santee needs. They told 10News it would add much-needed housing, and it would make the Country Club more of a destination, which would bring in visitors and more tax dollars.Mike Aiken, the director of the golf course, says they hope to build something that will benefit Santee. He also stressed that the current plans are just a starting point for development."Carlton Oaks has been a community asset here in Santee for nearly 60 years, and we are excited about our plans to significantly improve and update the property into a modern destination resort with a flagship hotel and all the other amenities that go with a modern resort," he told 10News in a statement. "Carlton Oaks wants to be good neighbors and members of our community by providing a quality sustainable project that Santee can be proud of long into the future."Aiken also says the golf course needs significant upgrades to its irrigation system. They've hired well-known golf course architect Cary Bickler, an SDSU alum, to redesign the course with the new system."Mr. Bickler knows every inch of our course and was the perfect choice to help redesign Carlton Oaks into a sustainable modern course, which will be challenging and fun for players of all abilities," Aiken says. "The new golf course will have a modern, efficient multi-million dollar irrigation system, which will help save millions of gallons of precious water. One of the great features of the new course is three brand new greens (holes 9, 16 and 18) will be surrounded by a new lake and water features and set just west of the new hotel and resort site and present an amazing view of the course and mountains to the west. We believe it will be one of the best views in the region, and the sunset views will be incredible."Aiken also says the development is necessary to keep the golf course open, as water costs rise and make it financially difficult to sustain. He points to several other golf courses around San Diego that have failed and closed. Some neighbors say they'd rather see this development happen than see the golf course turn into a vast wasteland.Despite the promises, people like Scalzetti say they won't change their minds. Scalzetti also says the plans violate rules in the current zoning and master plans for the community. He believes the fact that part of the development is in a flood plain means it also won't get past any environmental reviews.Scalzetti is hosting a neighborhood meeting at his home on Wednesday, November 13, at 6 pm. He wants to make sure his neighbors are aware of all his concerns.Officials with the City of Santee told 10News they don't have any official opinion on the development, as it is still in the very early stages of gaining approval. 4049

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Bay Area police say two teens have admitted to starting a grass fire that scarred an iconic hillside amid a scorching heatwave and dangerous fire conditions. South San Francisco police said a brush fire spotted Friday around noon on “Sign Hill” grew quickly due to hot and windy conditions. Crews contained the fire hours later with no injuries and no structures lost but residents were temporarily displaced. Officials say an alert resident spotted two teen boys, ages 14 and 16, leaving the area where the fire started.It has been a disastrous wildfire season in California. 619

SANTEE. Calif. (KGTV) - Two dogs have died after a fire broke out in an East County home.The fire broke out at a home on Big Rock Road and Rancho Fanita Drive just before 2 p.m. Wednesday. The fire started in the home's kitchen, according to Santee Fire Department crews.Neighbors said they first saw smoke and though the fire was in a large field behind the home, before realizing it was in a corner of the house.One neighbor reportedly ran over and called the home's owner, who was not home but told the neighbor her dogs were inside. The neighbor broke a window out and tried to get into the home to save the dogs but was pushed back because of the thick smoke.Santee Fire arrived and broke into the back of the home to put out the blaze. Crews found the dogs and performed CPR and gave them oxygen but they had already died.Crews said the neighbor was right not to enter the home if the smoke was as bad as described. The cause of the fire is under investigation.The owner of the home reportedly lives there with her daughter and son-in-law. 1073

(CNS) - Kobe Bryant's widow, Vanessa, responded Thursday to a lawsuit filed against her by her mother demanding financial support and claiming the late Laker legend had vowed to take care of her financially for life.In a statement posted online, Vanessa Bryant accused her mother -- Sofia Urbieta Laine -- accused her mother of trying to "extort a financial windfall from our family." Bryant said she and her husband long supported her, allowing her to live in their properties free of charge."She was a grandmother who was supported by me and her son-in-law at my request," Bryant said. "She now wants to back charge me per hour for supposedly working 12 hours a day for 18 years for watching her grandchildren. In reality, she only occasionally babysat my older girls when they were toddlers."Bryant said she has tried to make peace with her mother to no avail."Earlier this year, I was looking for a new home for her and, a week later, she went on television and gave an interview disparaging our family and making false accusations while living rent-free in a gated apartment complex in Newport Coast," she said. "Even after that betrayal, I was willing to provide my mother with monthly support for the rest of her life and that wasn't good enough. She, instead, contacted me through intermediaries -- contrary to what she claims, my phone number hasn't changed -- and demanded million, a house and a Mercedes SUV."Bryant said she refused, causing her mother to make "false and absurd claims" while demanding "more money than my husband and I ever spent to provide for her while he was alive.""She has no regard for how this is affecting my children and me," Bryant said.
