A global agency says COVID-19, better known as coronavirus, could make the world economy shrink this quarter. That would be a first since the international financial crisis more than a decade ago. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development says the world economy is still expected to grow overall this year and rebound next year. But it lowered its forecasts Monday for global growth in 2020 in a special report about the effect of the coronavirus. It said China's reduced production is hitting Asia particularly hard, and economists worry that as the disease spreads worldwide, it will cause more quarantines and create more concern among consumers. Consumer fear could cause people to cancel travel plans, avoid stores and stay home from work.It urged governments to act fast to prevent contagion and restore consumer confidence — both economically by lowering interest rates and by instituting health policies that will prevent the spread of the virus. 982
A dangerous and potentially deadly heatwave threatens much of the continental US, with dozens of record high temperatures both in the daytime and in the evening expected this weekend.More than 150 million people in nearly 30 states were under a heat watch, warning or advisory on Thursday morning, according to CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen.Over the next few days, more than 85 percent of the lower 48's population will see temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, Hennen said, and more than half will see temperatures in excess of 95 degrees.Much of the heat expected for Thursday was forecast to descend on the Midwest and Mississippi, before making its way to the Northeast on Friday and Saturday, Hennen said. 726
A fire at a Pennsylvania day care center early Sunday killed five children, including four siblings, officials said.Four people were injured, including two teenagers who jumped from a second-floor window onto a porch of the home in Erie to escape the flames, Erie Fire Chief Guy Santone told CNN in an interview. Santone said the homeowner was injured, along with a neighbor who tried to enter the burning home to rescue victims.Eight people were in the home when the fire broke out around 1:15 a.m., Santone said. The home also operated as a day care, according to fire officials."I was just down there, there's flowers everywhere," Santone said about a memorial at the scene. "Nobody likes to see this, especially when it's kids."Firefighters rescued the five children from second-story bedrooms at the front of the home, 836
