(KGTV) -- The longest-serving mail carrier in Carlsbad is set to retire Friday after 58 years of service.Mack Mata Jr. will be recognized Friday in front of his peers and family.“It’s not often we celebrate an employee who has served the Postal Service for 58 years,” said Postmaster Cindy Gibson.In the fall of 1960, Mata and his fiancée were downtown when she saw a “help wanted” sign in the window of the post office. After applying and completing a test, Mata was sworn in as a postal employee in Carlsbad in November of the same year.Mata recalled his fond memories at the office, saying he would watch kids grow up and move away only to return and become his customers.Mata also remembers the time he saved a woman along his route. “One day, something told me I should check on her and sure enough, I found her lying on the ground after she had fallen and couldn’t get up. She said, ‘I knew you’d eventually show up to help me.'A lot has changed since then. Mata says he used to make special deliveries on his bicycle and stamps only cost four cents.Mata is now married to Sheila Mata, who works at the Vista Post Office, has two sons, four grandchildren and plans to spend lots of time gardening and traveling with his wife after retirement. 1278

Carnival Cruise Lines announced Thursday that they are canceling several cruises until early 2021 due to COVID-19.In a press release, the cruise line company said that all P&O Cruises to the Caribbean were canceled until Jan. 2021, and cruises from and to Southampton, Arcadia, and Aurora were canceled through February.P&O Cruises is part of the Carnival Corporation.“With evolving restrictions on travel from the UK, unfortunately, it is necessary to cancel these itineraries," P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said in the news release. "These further cancellations vary according to ship as well as complexity and length of itineraries, advice, and guidance regarding ports of call and current air availability for fly/cruises. (KGTV) -- Customers of the Campo Group Water System are being advised that the county has issued a drinking water warning after samples found increased levels of nitrates.Sample results found that on September 2, 2020, nitrate levels exceeded the maximum contaminant level for safe drinking water.The group serves a mini mart, gasoline station, and an office, according to the county.Nitrates in drinking water are a health concern for infants less than six-months-old and pregnant women are advised not to consume the water.“Boiling, freezing, filtering, or letting water stand does not reduce the nitrate level,” the county said.The Campo Group Water System is providing bottled water until nitrate levels fall below the maximum contaminant level, the county said. 788
