It said:“Recent news articles reporting statements by Chris Wiest, the plaintiffs’ attorney, downplaying the dangers of the chickenpox virus are alarming and disappointing. Wiest’s comments are dismissive of the severity of this virus, and his recent announcement that he is advising his clients to actively contract the virus so that they can become individually immune to it is deeply concerning to the Northern Kentucky Health Department.“This is clearly not appropriate medical advice, according to physicians and infectious disease experts. Chickenpox, also known as varicella, is an acute infectious disease. When introduced in an unvaccinated population, the virus can rapidly spread, causing serious, even deadly consequences, to people who are particularly at risk, such as infants, adolescents, pregnant women, and adults and children with weakened immune systems, including those receiving cancer treatment."While the tactic Wiest suggests may provide an individual with future immunity from chickenpox, this infected person can easily spread the virus to other, unsuspecting people, including those particularly vulnerable to this potentially life-threatening infection."Encouraging the spread of an acute infectious disease in a community demonstrates a callous disregard for the health and safety of friends, family, neighbors, and unsuspecting members of the general public. A person who has contracted chickenpox can be infectious for up to 2 days before experiencing the rash that is associated with the virus. Control measures, such as restricted school attendance, participation in extracurricular activities, and instructing those who have symptoms to avoid contact with others, are designed to prevent unvaccinated people who have been exposed to the virus from infecting members of the general public while they are infectious."The Northern Kentucky Health Department has and will continue to follow the established medical guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other nationally acclaimed experts in infectious disease control in responding to the chickenpox outbreak among Assumption Academy students. Our first concern is always protection of the public health and implementing reasonable, medically-approved control measures that are designed to safeguard our region’s population, including those who are most vulnerable to the threat of infectious disease." 2411
-- meaning high fire risk -- into Friday afternoon. The Saddleridge Fire started around 9 p.m. ET and jumped the 210 and 5 freeways, and some parts those roads and the 405 were closed as orange embers lit up the night sky. By late Thursday it had gutted 60 acres; but some four hours later, it had grown to more than 4,000 acres, fire officials said.Hector Landeros, who lives in northern Los Angeles' Sylmar neighborhood, said he heard fire trucks and police cruisers speeding through the streets Thursday night as the massive flames got closer."In some areas, the streets have started to empty but at the front lines people are watching, waiting on the sidewalk not really knowing what to do," he told CNN early Friday. "There are a lot of people trying to get into their neighborhoods."Shaun Butch said he saw flames on both sides of the freeway while driving on Interstate 5."Everything was engulfed in smoke and visibility was so low it was hard to drive. Everyone on the Interstate 5 north was stopped and trapped. Still was able to barely get through on the Interstate 5 north."Patsy Zamora said as she drove on the freeway with the fire next to the truck route, she could feel the heat through the windows. In Sylmar, Mojdan Darabi's husband was spraying their house and yard with a garden hose early Friday, 1316

You can bet on it: Sports gambling is about to expand, big time, in the United States.Right now, the only place you can legally bet on sports is Nevada. But on Monday, the Supreme Court struck down a federal law that prohibited legalized sports gambling anywhere but Nevada. So what does this court decision mean, exactly? Now that there is no longer a federal law against sports gambling, each state is free to pass laws that govern where people will be able to bet on sports and how."It'll be a state-by-state matter," said Eugene Christiansen, an expert on casino gambling and consultant to the industry. "I'm sure there will be a wide variety as to how fast or how slow the licensing proceeds."Are any other states close to approving sports betting?Six states, including New Jersey which that brought the lawsuit to the Supreme Court, have already passed laws to allow casinos to take sports bets once the federal law was struck down, according to Geoff Freeman, CEO of the American Gaming Association. Those states are New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.Another 12 states have introduced legal sports gambling legislation.Even in states that have approved sports gambling, it'll take some time to complete the approval process, which will require companies to be licensed in order to take sports bets."In the case of New Jersey I think we're talking weeks before we have sports betting in place," he said. "For most of the other states, I'd expect it start at the beginning of the football season this fall."How widespread will sports betting become? There are a total of 40 states that have some kind of casino -- either state-regulated or tribal. Experts say they believe most if not all of those states will eventually allow sports gambling, simply because they won't want their own casinos to be at a competitive disadvantage with casinos just across state lines."It's the same reason we've seen the spread of casinos to so many states -- the states have been watching consumers going out of state to place bets," said Josh Schiller, an attorney who has represented various gaming interests. "People enjoy betting on sports."But experts say it could still take a few years before sports books are legal in states that haven't begun the process."Gaming law is something that typically takes time," said Freeman. "It's more complex than many people think."Will I be able to place a sports bet online in another state where it is legal?Monday's decision only allows states to control gambling within their own borders. It does not open the door for interstate online gambling, or placing online bets with foreign sports books. That would require additional legislation or lawsuits. How important is sports gambling for casinos?Actually, it's not a very profitable business. For instance, gamblers in Nevada lost about 0 million betting legal on sports last year. But that equals only about 2% of the Nevada gaming industry's take overall.Additionally, casinos have the potential to lose big on sports bets, unlike in house games. So sports betting can be the least profitable part of the casino, or even a money loser, according to experts.Casinos fought for the approval to take sports bets because it's an important way to draw customers into the casinos. Otherwise, they would lose that business to illegal competitors, such as bookies and offshore gambling sites. 3443
with illegally buying body armor and components for the weapon used in the deadly mass shooting on Aug. 4.Ethan Kollie, 24, of Kettering, admitted buying an upper receiver that was attached to Connor Betts's AR-15 and the 100-round double-drum magazine Betts used to kill nine people in the Dayton entertainment district, according to an affidavit.Kollie and Betts allegedly assembled the AR-15 in Kollie's apartment 10 weeks ago, according to U.S. Attorney Benjamin Glassman. Kollie bought the drum 6-8 weeks ago and that's when Betts then took possession of all three components.Kollie's admitted drug use made it illegal to purchase or possess a firearm or components, and Kollie is being charged for lying on federal firearm forms, according to Glassman.Glassman said there is no evidence that Kollie participated in the planning or shooting with Betts.Kollie, who was arrested Friday, said he and Betts did "hard drugs," marijuana and acid together four or five times a week between 2014 and 2015, according to Glassman. Kollie also told FBI agents he smokes marijuana every day and has done so since he was 14, and that he uses psychedelic mushrooms he grows in his residence, Glassman said.Kollie had a concealed carry permit and owned a micro Draco pistol, a Taurus semi-automatic and a .38 Taurus revolver, Glassman said. Agents interviewing Kollie at his apartment said they smelled marijuana and saw a bong and the Draco pistol in plain sight. When agents returned with a search warrant, they said Kollie was carrying the .38 and what they believed was a small amount of marijuana. When purchasing weapons, Kollie checked the "No" box when asked if he used drugs, Glassman said.Kollie said he kept the gun components and body armor he bought for Betts earlier this year because Betts wanted to hide them from his parents, according to Glassman.Glassman and Todd Wickerham, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI office in Cincinnati, announced the charges at a 2 p.m. news conference in Dayton.Glassman said the FBI investigation is continuing and anyone who assisted Betts or had prior knowledge of the attack would face federal charges.Wickerham said the FBI is still examining the cell phone Betts was carrying at the time of the attack.Kollie faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted, Glassman said. 2314
