Due to the wildfires raging in Northern California, San Francisco, Stockton and Sacramento were the world's three "most polluted cities" on Friday morning, according to Berkeley Earth, a nonprofit that aggregates data from air-quality monitoring sites.PurpleAir, which has a network of sensors around the world, also showed that California had worse air than traditional smog hotspots in India and China.CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller confirmed that "no region on Earth had as many air quality stations in the highest ranges" of particulate matter, or PM, the toxic mixture of particles and droplets that worsens after wildfires. Those values, he said, "stretched for hundreds of miles over Northern and Central California, from the mountains to the valleys and the coast."Schools, colleges and public transit have closed as smoke from the Camp Fire descends on the region."It appears to be the worst air quality ever experienced in San Francisco," said Dan Jaffe, a professor of environmental chemistry at the University of Washington. He called the situation "an air quality emergency," and experts said the smoke could undo decades of progress on pollution."We have made tremendous efforts and investment to clean up our air with considerable benefits for public health," said Dr. Daniel Jacob, a professor of atmospheric chemistry and environmental engineering at Harvard University. "But now it's like we're getting stabbed in the back with those wildfires." 1472

Dr. Anthony Fauci warned Sunday that even if a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, it still may not yield herd immunity. In an interview with the Aspen Institute on Sunday, Fauci — the U.S.'s top infectious disease expert — said he would settle for a vaccine that is between 70 and 75% effective."I doubt seriously that any vaccine will ever be a hundred percent protective. The best we've ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98% effective. That would be wonderful if we get there. I don't think we will," Fauci said. "I would settle for 70, 75% effective vaccine because that would bring you to that level of would-be herd immunity level."But a CNN poll says one-third of Americans do not plan to get a vaccine if it becomes available. Fauci said Sunday that if those figures hold true and a potential COVID-19 vaccine is only 75% effective, the U.S. population would not reach the herd immunity threshold that would kill the virus."That's one of the reasons why we have to make sure we engage the community as we're doing now to get community people, to help us for people to understand that we are doing everything we can to show that it's safe and that it's effective," Fauci said. "And it's for the good of them as individuals and in society to take the vaccine."Three coronavirus vaccines are expected to be studied in large-scale clinical trials in the next three months.Herd immunity comes when a sufficient portion of a population is immune to an infectious disease. That can come either come through prior illness or vaccination, making the disease unlikely to spread further. 1594
During a quarterly call with shareholders Wednesday, Papa John's CEO John Schnatter cited national anthem protests in the NFL as one of the reasons for the company's falling stock price.According to ESPN, Schnatter also took veiled shots at NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for not putting a stop to the anthem protests."Leadership starts at the top and this is an example of poor leadership," Schnatter said. ESPN also reports that Schnatter felt the issue should have been "nipped in the bud" when the protests first began. Papa John's stock price has fallen 5 percent since August. Business Insider reports that in-game pizza sales have dropped this season, especially since President Trump encouraged Americans to boycott the NFL in September.Papa John's advertises heavily during NFL games, and is the official pizza of the NFL. ESPN also reports that the company has pulled much of its NFL TV advertisements, and that the NFL has responded by offering additional future spots.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Disney is allowing guests at Magic Kingdom to wear Halloween costumes for the first time during normal park hours. The park recently announced in a blog post that guests of all ages can wear costumes from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31.In June, the park canceled its annual Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party because of the coronavirus pandemic. But this year, guests would be able to get into the Halloween spirit with costumes, themed foods, and merchandise, the park said.According to the park's website, costumes cannot contain sharp objects, they must be family-friendly, they can't have weapons, and anyone over the age of 14 cannot wear a mask with their outfit.Guests under the age of 13 can wear a mask, but it cannot cover the entire face, and their eyes must be visible. The park said costumes that "reach or drag on the ground" such as "full-length princess dresses" are not allowed. The park also added that all guests must still wear a face-covering while at the park. 978
