Despite being the most watched sport in the country, fewer young people are playing tackle football. And while 7th grader Andrew Ek dreams of playing in the NFL, Brigid Ling worries about what the sport can do to Andrew’s and her own son’s brains. “When our oldest son was 8 he was begging us to move on from flag football to play tackle,” Ling said. “And we just weren’t ready for him to play tackle football at that age.” A new survey found participation in tackle football for kids 6 to 12 years old, dropped more than 17 percent over the past five years. A big reason for the shift: brain injuries. After more than a decade of research, there’s hard evidence of a direct link between football and CTE - a brain disease caused by repeated hits to the head. “We just felt there had to be a good interim step for kids to play,” Ling said. So rather than find a new sport for their son to play, Ling and her husband created one. “We created TackleBar as a way to allow kids to make a transition step from flag football to tackle football,” she said. In TackleBar, players hit but they don’t tackle each other to the ground. The goal is to wrap up and rip off foam bars harnessed on other player’s lower backs. Tacklebar coach Logan U’u grew up in a city that embraced hardnose football. “Playing football in Oakland, man, you got guys like Marshawn Lynch out there in your league,” U’u said. “We’re just little kids just cracking heads every single play.” Earning a football scholarship to the University of Minnesota, U’u knows about the sport’s rewards. He also knows about the risks like concussions. “You become nauseated to the point where you feel like you’re going to throw up and maybe you do throw up,” he said. “And then you feel like you want to cry but you can’t because you’re so confused. It’s a very bizarre feeling.” U’u says TackleBar teaches players proper tackling techniques and ultimately better prepares kids to transition to real take downs. Neurosurgeon and University of Minnesota researcher Uzma Samadani says TackleBar is much safer than both tackle and even flag football, and she has the research to prove it. “We published this paper in the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine,” she said. “Basically, what we found was that the injury rate was seven-fold lower in the TackleBar kids versus the other kids” For two seasons, Samadani tracked 1,000 football players ages 9 to 15, and her findings showed a big spike in safety. “I think TackleBar makes athletes safer for two mechanisms,” she said. “One is reducing head-to-head contact and other is reducing head-to-ground contact.” Despite the study, Samadani says banning contact sports isn’t the ultimate answer – safer options are. “Now that we understand that the chronic effects of neurotrauma exist and they’re very serious we have to prevent it from happening in the next generation,” she said. Now entering its fifth season, TackleBar is attracting a new generation of young football players. “Last year we were over 8,000 kids in over 200 communities,” said TackleBar CEO Tim Healy. Healey says they plan on continuing to expand to teams across the country with the hope that TackleBar can reverse the trend and ultimately bring kids back to old-school football – when they’re ready. “It pains me when I see these schools where the numbers are down so much,” he said. “This is a way we can save the game.” 3447

A new chocolate fudge brownie and specialty-grade coffee will join the menu all year, while a seasonal cold brew will only be available for a limited time. The national chain says the brownie features a "rich semi-sweet chocolate melted into the batter along with tasty, fudgy chunks" and is sold individually wrapped. The treat can be purchased separately or by the tray. Bill Chavez has always been fascinated with big trucks. He comes from a long line of truckers, which is one of the reasons he’s devoted his life for 39 years to the profession. To most people, Chavez’s truck looks like any traditional semi. However, it’s not ordinary, because with a push of a button, it can drive itself. “What we’re trying to do is create the world’s safest self-driving trucks,” says Chuck Price, the chief product officer of TuSimple, the company behind the self-driving semis. TuSimple is currently operating 15 self-driving semis, and Price says by June, they'll have three times that number. “This is actually a laser radar unit; we call it lidar, built into the mirror. This gives us a close-in view,” Price describes. “Then, we have cameras along the top of the vehicle that show us…much further away.” TuSimple’s trucks are already in the southwest part of the country, on interstates across the region. "Our systems see farther, track more objects and respond faster than a human can operate," Price says. Right now, a human must be in the trucks at all times as back-up protocol, but the company says a fully self-driving semi could happen by 2020. The company says when that day comes, it will alleviate one of the industry's biggest problems.Tony Bradley, with the Arizona Trucking Association, says nationwide they're currently 50,000 drivers short. "This is the worst shortage we've seen in the history of trucking,” Bradley stresses. Bradley says 15 years from now, the shortage could be as high as 200,000, thanks to the large number of drivers approaching retirement age. "It's a job that is frankly, not very glamorous," Bradley says. However, the job continues to be appealing to Chavez. "It's just very enjoyable to be out there on the road and being your own boss," Chavez says. He knows that a time may come where drivers might be replaced by this technology. However, he's OK with that idea and says roads will be safer for everyone. Apparently that’s a big deal… #worldrecord" on an account dedicated to photos of the boy growing up and going on outdoor adventures. His parents, on their own individual Instagram accounts, specified that Rich was six months and four days old at the time — beating the youngest-known record by six days. A report looking at cell phone data and geographical increases in COVID-19 cases, has estimated more than 260,000 cases nationwide were a result of the Sturgis motorcycle rally held in South Dakota.The 63-page report looked at the potential results of a “superspreader” event; an event where “large crowds, coupled with minimal mask-wearing and social distancing by attendees.” It included researchers from San Diego State University, Bentley University and University of Colorado Denver. The results were issued over the weekend and have not been peer reviewed at this time.The same group has looked at other events, like Black Lives Matter demonstrations nationwide and President Donald Trump’s rally in Tulsa.For the Sturgis event, they identified counties which saw lots of rally-goers and tracked COVID-19 cases before and after the event in those areas using available CDC data.Roughly 500,000 people attended the event, according to information from the South Dakota Department of Transportation, which ran from August 7 to 16.Their research found in counties nationwide who had a lot of Sturgis attendees, the COVID-19 case count in their home counties increased about 10.7 percent from about a month before to a few weeks after the rally."Under the guise of academic research, this report is nothing short of an attack on those who exercised their personal freedom to attend Sturgis,” Gov. Kristi Noem said in the statement to The Argus Leader. "Predictably, some in the media breathlessly report on this non-peer reviewed model, built on incredibly faulty assumptions that do not reflect the actual facts and data here in South Dakota."The state has reported 124 cases of COVID-19 of South Dakota residents who attended the rally.Last week, state health departments in various states issued warnings about residents who may have contracted COVID-19 at the Sturgis rally. States are relying on patients who test positive to report the possible exposure at the motorcycle rally. "We're never going to be able to contact trace every single person from Sturgis," Andrew Friedson, one of four authors of the study said. "So if we want a good-faith estimate using, at the moment, the accepted statistical techniques ... this is the best number we're going to get in my opinion."Using findings from another team of researchers, the team estimates the Sturgis rally may have generated a public health cost of about .2 billion.
