SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's been a tumultuous year for East Village's Monkey Paw Brewery. The local brewing company was purchased by Coronado Brewing Company in July 2017, put up for sale in May of this year, and closed its downtown San Diego brewpub Monday.Coronado Brewing Company (CBC) CEO Brandon Richards said in May, months after finalizing the purchase, the sale was part of a refocusing for CBC.RELATED: Miramar's Intergalactic Brewery is closing its doors"While we were excited about the potential of Monkey Paw, the decision to sell came from the need to refocus our energy toward Coronado Brewing," Richards said. "We’re confident that the award-winning Monkey Paw brewery has brand equity that can be of value to someone looking to enter the craft industry."CBC said they would keep the downtown brewpub open while fielding offers for Monkey Paw.However, Richards told 10News Tuesday they are still looking for a buyer for the brand and are now determining the best use for Monkey Paw's former space.Richards added that CBC is currently producing Monkey Paw beers on an as needed basis.RELATED: Novo Brazil Brewing announces new?Chula Vista locationMonkey Paw had amassed a list of awards, including wins at the San Diego International Beer Competition, Los Angeles International Beer Festival, Great American Beer Festival, and World Beer Cup.Though soon after CBC's purchase of the brand, Monkey Paw's founder Scott Blair filed a lawsuit against Monkey Paw for breach of contract, according to Brewbound.Blair claimed Monkey Paw owed him ,534, plus interest, as part of a promissory note. Blair said he had not received any payments, which were to be made monthly, since Oct. 2017.At the time CBC announced the sale, Richards told Brewbound the decision was not a result of the pending lawsuit. 1859

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jalen McDaniels, San Diego State University basketball's sophomore forward, was accused of filming consensual sex acts with a classmate in 2016 without her knowledge and sharing it with friends, according to a civil lawsuit filed Wednesday in Washington. The civil suit alleges McDaniels recorded the intimate moments with an 18-year-old female student while they were both seniors at Federal Way High School near Tacoma, Wash. The lawsuit goes on to say while McDaniels later told the plaintiff about the unauthorized recordings and that he had shared it with his friends, she learned from other students that the video became widely circulated. When she confronted McDaniels, he explained he had gotten away with a similar incident involving another female student, according to the lawsuit. The plaintiff's attorney, Joan Mell, who filed the suit, wrote her client has suffered from several self-destructive behaviors as a result, including attempting suicide.SDSU is accused of wrongdoing in the lawsuit as well.Mell alleges in the lawsuit that SDSU was contacted by Washington police to provide them with McDaniels' phone number, but failed to do so. The suit says SDSU, instead, alerted former basketball coach Steve Fisher, who secured McDaniels a lawyer, and McDaniels refused to cooperate. The suit goes on to allege McDaniels' refusal to cooperate and, "that others concealed his wrongdoing prevented prompt criminal investigation and referral to the prosecutor's office for timely filing of criminal charges under Washington’s criminal offense of distribution of intimate images."In a statement, SDSU said there would be "no change in [McDaniels'] status at the university" at this time, after an investigation by Washington authorities resulted in no charges before McDaniels' enrollment at the school: 1837

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Maintenance crews were hard at work at UC San Diego Tuesday fortifying campus buildings ahead of the rainstorms expected this week, all while several dorms continued to dry out from the last one.Workers shored up roofs and deployed straw wattles and 200 sandbags near the Marshall Lower Apartments. The university said 12 to 15 dorms flooded last week during torrential rain.UC San Diego said drains near the apartment complex were overwhelmed by the water and debris.RELATED: UC San Diego students reeling from flooded dorms after storm“We conducted additional drain and area inspections of the Lower apartments in advance of the rain,” the university said in a message to residents. “[Housing, Dining and Hospitality] maintenance staff will be on standby to ensure that everything holds and storm drains remain clear.”The National Weather Service said a flash flood warning will be in effect Wednesday morning through Thursday evening in coastal areas and the inland valleys. The bulk of the rain is expected to hit Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. Rainfall totals through Friday could reach 1.5 to 2 inches in coastal areas and up to 3 inches in the San Diego County mountains, NWS meteorologist Miguel Miller said.UC San Diego maintenance crews were still trying to dry out some of the dorms that flooded with fans Tuesday, meaning some students have to contend with the hum of dehumidifiers while studying for midterms.RELATED: What you need to know about San Diego's Thanksgiving holiday storm“The dehumidifiers were kind of loud, but it was a constant sound so I got used to it,” said one student.Another student, Jason Rose, said not only did his apartment building flood, his car did too. The vehicle was parked in the Hopkins Parking Structure.“I was studying all night for a week, so I didn’t go to my car until four days after. When I opened my car door, it smelled terrible and when I looked inside it was just full of water,” he said.“It’s totalled probably,” he added.Rose said the university did offer to help with his insurance claim.Check 10News Pinpoint Weather conditionsStudents said maintenance crews have been quick to respond to issues, but with this week’s storms will be a test.“I’m pretty concerned,” said one student. “Especially because it seems like there’s not any long term changes right now. I know that takes longer to do, but I don’t think 10 sandbags are going to save all of our apartments.” 2466
