(KGTV) - A local woman believes she was the target of a so-called "slider" targeting drivers at gas stations.Just past noon on Wednesday at the Arco on Jamacha Road, Blanca Maye finished filling up and then noticed a white sedan pull up next to her.Inside the car was a casually dressed man, about 30 years old. She said he glanced at her car a few times and that made her pause. She locked up her car, after collecting some trash from it.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhood"I was walking toward the trash can, and I remember hearing someone grab my door handle," said Maye.She says when she looked back there he was: the same man right next to her door, quickly walking away toward the cashier.Upset, Maye stared at him and then drove away with her purse safely sitting on the floor of her car. Others haven't been so lucky.  Recently, police in the Los Angeles area sent out video of "sliders" in action: thieves pulling up - and while the driver is distracted - getting low and sneaking toward the car to steal valuables. Police warned these incidents on the rise in Southern California and the target is usually women who are alone."People don't expect this to happen at gas station. SPRINGFIELD, Va. — Virginia's largest school system is removing the name of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from one of its high schools in favor of the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis.The board voted Thursday to rename Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield, Virginia — a Washington, D.C. suburb — after the late congressman and civil rights leader.A news release posted on the school district's website says the new name will be effective for the 2020-21 school year."Rep. Lewis was a champion of the Civil Rights movement, and our Board strongly believes this is an appropriate tribute to an individual who is a true American hero," School Board Chair Ricardy Anderson said in a statement. "We will also honor his life's work by continuing to promote equity, justice, tolerance and service in the work that we do.""The name Robert E. Lee is forever connected to the Confederacy, and Confederate values are ones that do not align with our community," said Tamara Derenak Kaufax, a board member representing the high school's district. "Our schools must be places where all students, staff, and members of the community feel safe and supported. Several industries have been disrupted since the coronavirus pandemic hit the U.S., including the food supply chain. From dumped milk to piles of uneaten onions and potatoes, this was just some of the food going to waste on farms across America due to COVID-19-related shutdowns.“Really its impact on the food supply chain started in March,” said Jack Buffington, a supply chain expert currently developing the supply chain program at the University of Denver. “Most of us who have been in the supply chain have never seen an event like this happen.” While farmers were dumping or burying products, food banks were missing out on some much-needed supplies, and dealing with growing demand. So were grocery stores as restaurants were closed and consumer buying habits changed.“More of the retail food market went down and more of the consumer home food market went up,” Buffington explained. “This caused a major shock in the supply chain where you had this situation where some foods were going to waste and some foods were in high demand.”First, the federal government stepped in to help. The USDA was given up to billion through the Coronavirus Assistance Program to buy fresh produce, dairy, and meat from farmers and then distribute that to those in need.And then there were nonprofit organizations like FarmLink.“We matched a farm in Idaho, an onion farm, to or local food bank in Los Angeles,” Max Goldman with FarmLink explained. “We delivered 50,000 pounds of onions to them.” He said that was their proof of concept.Goldman is a student at Brown University. Him and a group of students saw the disruption in the supply chain, and decided to do something about it.“A lot of what we do is finding food that would’ve been sent to the dump,” he said.So, FarmLink was born to help with food waste.“We’ve done two million pounds in seven days,” Goldman said. In just two months, they’ve reallocated four million pounds of food. They pay farmers their cost with donations and grants they receive, and help get the good to food banks. Goldman said the farmers are generally grateful“One of the first farmers we worked with, he said the day he has to dump his food is the worst day of his life. He works all year to basically produce this food and for him to have to a dig a hole in his backyard and just take a dump truck and put all his potatoes and onions or whatever it is, he said it makes him cry and it’s the worst day of his life,” Goldman said. “Even if he lost money on it, he was glad he could send this food to people in need during this time.”So far, they’ve delivered food to approximately 30 states.“This is not a new issue and its been accelerated and made more public due to coronavirus, but every year there’s over 60 billion pounds of food waste,” Goldman said.Buffington said the work of FarmLink and organizations doing similar work is just a drop in the bucket, but it’s promising.“Small in scale of the overall supply chain, but it’s huge in this opportunistic saving of food,” he explained. Buffington sees this type of work as a Band-Aid on the bigger issue, but it could open eyes to solutions down the road.“Supply chains work really well on stability,” Buffington said. “It’s tough to think about innovation which is disruption, when you're worried about a disruption to your current model.”“I think when we pull out of this you’re going to see remarkable opportunities for innovation,” he said.For now, FarmLink and other organizations are working to make sure food doesn’t go to waste. SILVERADO CANYON (CNS) - A wind-driven brush fire in Silverado Canyon sparked by a house fire exploded to 7,200 acres Thursday, injuring two firefighters and growing rapidly as mandatory and voluntary evacuations were ordered for residents in a large portion of Orange County.The two firefighters injured worked for the Cleveland National Forest Service."They were treated on scene and transported to a local hospital," said Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy. "Their exact condition is unknown to me."Mandatory evacuations were in effect in the Modjeska, Silverado and Williams Canyon areas, Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills west of El Toro and north of the 241 Toll Road.Voluntary evacuations were issued for the following areas:-- Lake Forest, from the 241 Toll Road, along Bake Parkway to Musick and north to the border with Irvine and from the 241 Toll Road north to Bake Parkway to Foothill Ranch Community Ranch;-- Borrego Canyon;-- Baker Ranch;-- Portola Hills;-- Live Oak Canyon;-- Trabuco Canyon;-- Rose Canyon;-- Valley Vista Way;-- Meadow Ridge Drive;--Cowan and Lemon Heights.Evacuees were strongly encouraged to stay with family or friends or in a hotel, the OCFA said."Due to COVID-19, no congregate shelter is offered," the authority tweeted about 5:20 a.m. A temporary OC Red Cross evacuation point at Santiago Community College at 8405 E. But the owner of Bankhead Mississippi Style Cookin' in Spring Valley says what is not a secret are the racial tensions still evident in America."You know I come out of Mississippi, so I was born into some of the things that are going on right now," Bankhead said. He says he supports the protests. He even took part in #blackouttuesday on his restaurant's social media pages. But the violence, he cannot condone. "When you're tearing up stuff in your own neighborhood, that's not helping the cause at all," Bankhead said. Since opening up his restaurant eight years ago, he had seen great success. But since the coronavirus pandemic hit, his shop has taken a 40% hit. On Tuesday, however, his store was suddenly packed."We had all nationalities come in," manager, Betty King said.
