The clicket-clacks of dancing tap shoes have been a part of Gene GeBauer’s life for more than seven decades. These days, he uses a cane for assistance — something he says is sad, “but gee, I’m 85!”Despite the stick by his side, he still gets just as much joy as he did when he first set foot on the dance floor when he was 12 years old.“I danced so much that I just kept getting better and better and better,” GeBauer says from one of several studios in suburban Denver, Colorado, he teaches at.In fact, he was so good that he soon made his way to New York, landing parts in six of the biggest Broadway shows of the 60s and 70s.“I wanted to shout to everybody and say ‘I’m in a Broadway show!’” he says smiling. “I didn’t, but that’s how happy I was.”He danced alongside Carol Burnett in ‘Once Upon a Mattress,’ Julie Andrews in ‘Camelot,’ and Carol Channing in his favorite gig of all: ‘Hello, Dolly.’“’Hello, Dolly’ became, you know, a huge hit!” he says glowing. “That was the highlight of my life. That doesn’t really happen.”After having left New York to start a family, he eventually settled in Colorado where he’s still teaching tap. He says he’s slowing down, but his class schedule says otherwise.“I teach — ” he pauses to think. “Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday — five days a week.”And even though he will occasionally instruct from his chair — "I’m weak and get a little foggy sometimes” — seeing his students’ faces when they move is almost just as good. “That is a pleasure, to see them. They smile when they’re dancing, they’re happy.”“That is rewarding,” he says, smiling. 1619

The Dominican Republic's top tourism official on Friday downplayed a spate of deaths among American tourists as an exaggeration."It's not true that there has been an avalanche of American tourists dying in our country, and it's not true that we have mysterious deaths here," Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia told reporters.Garcia said toxicology reports were still pending in some cases but that autopsy results and causes of death have been released. He said his country has been in constant communication with US Embassy officials. The characterization in some media outlets of an "avalanche of deaths does not correspond to reality," he said.At the news conference, the minister read the names of the Americans who have died in the past year, with the official cause of death -- noting that all died of natural causes.Garcia said Americans are not canceling their vacations to the Dominican Republic. His country was working to clear up what he called misrepresentations and "exaggerated" reports about the deaths."We want the truth, not a special treatment," he said.At least nine American citizens have died at Dominican Republic resorts -- or after falling ill at one -- over the past year, according to information from the US State Department, victims' family members and the resorts involved. The deaths have left some Americans wondering if they should cancel upcoming trips to the Caribbean nation.Officials there have called the deaths isolated events as they work to reassure travelers their country is safe.Of the nine Americans who have died while or after visiting a Dominican Republic resort since June 2018, it's not clear how many deaths owed to natural causes.Samples taken from at least one minibar at the Bahia Principe Hotel were being tested by the FBI as part of the agency's collaboration with Dominican authorities, the country's public health ministry said this week.Officials in the Dominican Republican or the United States have not said the deaths are connected.Three of the Americans died at the Bahia Principe resort in La Romana within days of each other. Two died at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana. The investigations into the deaths have included visits from health inspectors, including environmental health and epidemiology specialists, according to Carlos Suero, spokesman for the public health ministry. The State Department has a standing travel advisory for the Dominican Republic, urging travelers to have caution because of crime, but it has not issued a travel alert specific to the traveler deaths. From 2012 to 2018, 128 Americans died in the Dominican Republic from something other than natural causes, according to US State Department statistics. That averages about 18 annually. The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean's top tourism destinations, with more than 6 million stopover tourists last year, including 2.2 million Americans, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.Tourism represented more than 17 percent of the country's economy last year, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. 3098

The massive storm system that killed several people from Texas to Mississippi is now barreling east, threatening to spawn tornadoes and other catastrophic weather from New England to the Gulf Coast.About 90 million people are under the gun for destructive weather Sunday, CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said. While Sunday's storms might not be as severe as the ones that battered the South on Saturday, they will hit far more people in heavily populated cities."New York, Washington DC and Atlanta all within the zone," CNN Meteorologist Derek Van Dam said.At least one tornado was reported Sunday morning in southeast Alabama, near Troy and Goshen, the National Weather Service's Birmingham office said."Heavy rainfall may hide this tornado. Do not wait to see or hear the tornado. Take cover now," the NWS office said."Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely."Not just tornadoesBut tornadoes aren't the only possible cause of destruction Sunday."Damaging winds and some hail are also associated with these storms pushing through the Southeast this morning," Brink said. The threat of severe weather will likely increase throughout the day, the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center said."Some storms may also produce large hail or torrential downpours resulting in localized flash flooding," the weather service tweeted. At least 3 children killed in this storm systemThe storm system's first two victims were two children in east Texas. The children, ages 3 and 8, were killed when a tree fell on a car. They were in the back seat with their parents in the front, Angelina County Sheriff's Department Capt. Alton Lenderman said.A preliminary damage survey showed an EF-3 tornado, with winds up to 140 mph, touched down in Robertson County, the 1907
