We've heard about telehealth for people, but now it's there for animals too. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, there's been a significant increase in telemedicine, and some veterinarians are entirely virtual. The pandemic has proven we can do almost anything from our couches, computers and phones. We've grown accustomed to all things virtual and it seems our pets are used to it too.“It really highlights the value of something like this and it also really highlights where society is living. Even before the pandemic, turned to google, turned to the internet first. It's our first step in almost everything,” says Dr. Sarah Machell.Machell is the lead veterinarian for Vetster, which provides on-demand virtual care for your pet.“Consultations, meeting pet owners in their homes, where they are with their pets, and helping to address urgent and preventive care health conversations to them,” Machell said. She says the company, which launched in October 2019, wasn’t formed because of the pandemic, but they certainly evolved at the right time."The veterinary clinics themselves are feeling a really heavy surge with the pandemic. It’s a pretty crushing situation for them. We already as a profession had some staffing challenges, not enough veterinarians for how many pets and pet owners there are,” Machell said.Pet owners, she says, often have a hard time getting an appointment. Or they have to wait in their cars with their animal outside of their clinic. And, according to Vetster, 50% of pet owners don't even have an established home clinic.“There was a poll recently that showed 37% of American households welcomed a new pet into their home during the pandemic. Pandemic puppies are a real thing,” Machell said.“I think it offers a great addition to the tools I have at my disposal. Telehealth can be used very much the same way,” said Dr. Douglass Kratt, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. The AVMA serves roughly 96,000 veterinarians across the country. They've been through a lot this year, adjusting to new norms, like all of us. As in human medicine, they've had to perfect, or initiate virtual options.“It doesn’t replace your veterinarian. What it does is help your vet better serve you and your family member,” Kratt said.Kratt admits there are some obvious challenges.“I can’t hear if your dog is coughing, I can’t listen to the heart and lungs via telemedicine so that wouldn’t be amenable,” Kratt said.He says, however, it's effective overall, and especially worthwhile if it's with your established vet. But if you don't have one, Vetster and other businesses like it aim to help.“There are so many pets and pet owners who sometimes sit on things and aren’t sure if they need to go into a clinic, really appreciate that piece of mind in the middle of the night that no, you don’t need to pack yourself up and get into a vet clinic. This is something you’re okay to wait until the morning,” Machell said. And she says they're prepared to help all animals from pocket pets to exotic and large animals. It’s yet another adjustment and another pivot in 2020. 3131

When it comes to saving lives, seconds count. And now, thanks to improving technology, drones are proving to be a game changer in an emergency.Dozens of people’s lives were saved last year with the help of drones, according to drone maker DJI.  The company said from May of 2017 to April of 2018, 65 people were rescued with the help of a drone. DJI reviewed media reports to come up with that number and included documentation in its recent report released this year.Firefighters, search and rescue teams and other members of law enforcement are using drones to survey an area much faster from the air than people can on the ground.“During a search and rescue operation we can see body temperature, Romeo Durscher, DJI’s Public Safety Integration Director, said.Drones carry more than simple cameras. They are now built to send back infrared images.Aeryon Defense USA, of Denver, has drones that can carry upwards of four pounds of payload. The company sells drones that can be used by police agencies and the military."That allows you to hook in a medical kit, radio, food, water (or) ammunition to provide life sustaining equipment," said Mark Holden of Aeryon Defense USA. “We can carry water, enough for one day, food, even ammunition resupplies and some explosives as well.”The company’s drones can also be programed to single out a person moving in the camera’s view, but ignore a tree blowing in the wind or wildlife.“This is just the beginning. Everything we do is about taking the load off the end user. We want to replace human functions on the battlefield with a robot,” Holden said.Drones have helped find a woman with dementia in Randolph County, North Carolina. She had wandered into a nearby field. Drones dropped a life preserver to flood victims in Sichuan, China before rescue crews arrived to save the victims. An infrared camera-equipped drone located a crash victim who became unconscious after leaving his car to get help. A similar camera also was used to locate lost tubers on a river in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.Technology allows drones to carry more weight than before. In the last one-and-a-half to two years, drone makers have improved how drones fly in difficult weather conditions."Search and rescue operations rarely happen on a beautiful, no wind kind of day so we had to design them to withstand the snow, the wind, and the rain,” Durscher said. They can help save the lives of rescuers too."You know what's ahead of you. It can alert you of a big cliff or flooded river,” Durscher said.Drones used by most rescue agencies run as much as ,000 to ,000. 2642

With Georgia playing a key role in this year’s presidential election, Democrats in the state are reminding voters to check the status of their ballot before a 5 p.m. Friday deadline.Voters in Georgia have until then to “cure” their ballot as the state has a rule that allows people who have their ballot rejected for administrative reasons, such as forgetting a signature, to fix their ballot. Ballots not cured by 5 p.m. Friday are thrown out.Georgia is not the only state that allows for ballot curing. According to the National Association of State Legislatures, 18 states have rules that allow voters to correct errors such as signature discrepancies. While in some states, the deadline to fix such discrepancies has passed, in other states, voters have up to three weeks to fix their ballot depending on the state.Other close states that allow ballot curing include Nevada and Arizona. Nevada gives voters seven days to correct a signature discrepancy. Arizona gives voters five days to make a correction.Pennsylvania is a state that does not have a process for ballot curing. According to WPVI-TV, some counties allowed voters to cure their ballot, prompting a lawsuit from Republicans. According to WPVI, nearly 1,600 voters in Bucks County had their ballot rejected, many for not properly placing their ballot inside of the “secrecy envelope," as voters in Pennsylvania are required to place their ballot inside an unmarked envelope, which is placed inside a marked envelope. In most states that permit ballot curing, elections officials are to notify voters of the discrepancy immediately. But with thousands of ballots being counted, there are questions on whether election officials are able to reach all voters.Stacey Abrams, a prominent Georgia Democrat who had an unsuccessful bid for governor in 2018, launched a website “CheckMyBallot.net” which allows voters in key battleground states to check the status of their mail-in or provisional ballot. What voters aren’t able to do through vote curing is change their vote. 2040

When traveling to many places, it’s required to quarantine or get tested for COVID-19 before and after you arrive.Starting Thursday, Iceland is going to let visitors skip all of that if they prove they've had COVID-19 and recovered. But for now, travel from the U.S. to the country still isn't allowed. So, are these so-called immunity passports a good idea?Dr. Ania Wajnberg at Mount Sinai has been studying COVID-19 antibodies since March. Her team has tested more than 80,000 people in the New York area, and they’ve found the majority of people who had COVID-19 form moderate or high levels of antibodies.“Since March and April, almost everybody has maintained their level of antibodies. We do see a slight decrease, but overall, they've maintained their antibody levels,” said Wajnberg. But it's not entirely clear how long immunity does last and how good the protection against COVID-19 is.Wajnberg says we also don't have a lot of data on whether people who have antibodies could still possibly carry enough of the virus that they could spread it.The World Health Organization has advised against immunity passports. It says there's not enough evidence of immunity from antibodies alone.“I think given that we know that many or most people likely have some protection, this is not an unreasonable way to begin to open up society in a safer way than just throwing open the doors and hoping for the best,” said Wajnberg.Iceland's chief epidemiologist says he doesn't think it's fair to people who've had COVID-19, that they shouldn't be allowed to travel freely afterward.Critics of immunity passports warn they could potentially reward reckless people who become infected after ignoring COVID-19 rules or take away more of our medical privacy. 1755
