A 55-foot Christmas tree originating from Colorado’s Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests was lit on Wednesday night in front of the US Capitol.The annual ceremony, which typically draws thousands of spectators, was held without a crowd due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the event was live streamed, and still contained some pomp and circumstance as congressional leaders joined in the annual ceremony.The tree was officially cut on November 5 before making the cross-country trek to Washington, DC.While tonight’s ceremony was held without spectators, those who are in the DC area can view the tree nightly. (KGTV) One of the biggest city-owned office spaces sits vacant and may do so for a little while longer.The City of San Diego acquired the 19-story tower at 101 Ash St. in the beginning of last year in effort to consolidate staff into a new space, but various delays have kept the renovation from being completed.Officials signed a lease-to-own contract for the old Sempra Energy building and have been paying more 5,000 a month plus operational costs since January of 2017.The city was supposed to move in July 2017 and the estimated daily cost for the vacant structure is a little less than ,000.“I do believe the city has bungled this decision from the beginning starting with the purchase,” said San Diego City Councilmember Barbara Bry.Bry was elected to council after officials voted to acquire the building for million and says the issue can be traced to how city staff briefed council just before the purchase.“At the time city staff told the council that the building was in excellent shape and the million in tenant improvements was enough,” added Bry.Records indicate the city has paid more than million in rent and roughly million in operating costs since taking over the property.Bry is working behind the scenes to mitigate the matter before the costs balloon any more, but estimates it will be at least six months until staff can move into the 101 Ash Street building.The City of San Diego says more than 1,100 employees will work there when the renovation is complete and they plan to move into the building sometime in fiscal year 2019 — which begins in July. 1617

A 5th grade teacher may have been forced out because she wears a hijab.That’s the allegation against Melvindale/Northern Allen Park School District in a lawsuit filed this past week.The lawyer for Amirah Mosed said the way she was treated at work at Allendale Elementary School isn't right and in the lawsuit they allege Mosed was subjected to a hostile environment where she was told to “get a job in Dearborn” among other things, harassment that they say is against the law. “This is a woman who’s born in the U.S, who is very American and a wonderful teacher and just a great person with a sense of humor, a delightful human being,” attorney David Nacht said.Nacht said his client endured religious discrimination while she taught 5th grade.In the lawsuit against the district there are allegations Mosed was told by supervisors to resign or get fired, to “get a job in Dearborn,” told her students were not safe with her, all because she is of Yemini descent and dresses, culturally, in a hijab.”It got worse and the students loved her and she was written up and fired and it’s bologna. and its not America,” Nacht said.The allegations are discrimination and harassment on the basis of her religion. Nacht said there were no legitimate concerns about her teaching abilities.“She was just not perceived to fit the community to fit the school,” Nacht said. “What this case is really about making America safe in the workplace, for all Americans. (KGTV) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says voters who may be sick or in quarantine due to COVID-19 on Election Day should take steps when breaking quarantine to vote.The agency says that any COVID-19 patients who head out to vote should ear a mask, stay at least six feet away from others, wash their hands and use hand sanitizer before and after voting, and let poll workers know that they are sick when arriving at the polling location."Voters have the right to vote, regardless of whether they are sick or in quarantine. Voters who are sick or in quarantine should take steps to protect poll workers and other voters," the CDC says.The CDC also recommended that patients bring their own supplies to vote, including pens and sample ballots or registration forms.The CDC's recommendations for all voters can be read online. 850
