OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The piercing sound of a high-powered drill could be heard coming from the Otay Mesa border wall prototypes Tuesday morning. Journalist Jorge Neito captured the images from a neighborhood in Tijuana. Construction workers could be seen drilling more than a dozen holes into the concrete barriers.Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed to 10News last week that the prototypes were coming down to make space for a secondary border fence. That fence will strech 14 miles from the beach to Otay Mountain. Officials never specified when the prototype demolition would happen.The prototypes are 30 feet high and were built in last September of 2017. President Trump toured the barriers in 2018. Out of the eight designs there wasn't one specifically picked for the border wall. "There was never an intent to pick one and copy that along the entire U.S. border. The entire concept literally was how can we do this better," San Diego Sector Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott told 10News in 2018. "But we're not picking one of these walls over the other walls, and we never planned on doing that. So, depending on the terrain or the environment, it could be any one of these? Correct."10News reached out to Border Patrol locally to find out if today's work is part of the prototypes' demolition and a spokesperson referred us to Washington D.C., so far we have not heard back. 1413
PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- After Larry McNamer received a cease-and-desist letter from San Diego County officials, during the first week purple tier restrictions went into place, he said he will not back down."This is what courts are for. I'll fight it, I will fight it," the owner of Major’s Diner in Pine Valley said.In the letter, county officials noted he could face up to a ,000 fine for every violation under the state's guidelines, which includes not allowing guests inside."It could be ,000. I don't care because I can't afford to pay it, so I couldn't pay it if I had to,” McNamer told ABC 10News.McNamer said it all boils down to survival of this business and what he thinks is right in an uphill battle with the county and the state."They're going to have be a lot more fair about doling this out and understand that we zero cases up here [in Pine Valley],” he said.Even as he continues to serve up hot plates inside, McNamer said nothing changes when it comes to safety measures given by the state. He said guests are sat apart inside and have the option of dining outdoors if they choose.ABC 10News caught up with a couple from Alpine who grabbed a bite to eat Friday morning, not because Major's was the only diner open but they wanted to support him after seeing him on ABC 10News newscasts."We saw they were in trouble and in need of assistance, so we came to support them,” the supporter, Mark, said.ABC 10News asked Mark and his wife if they thought customers supporting restaurants who defy public health orders are contributing to the problem of COVID-19 cases rates surging, as restrictions continue to grow."Show me the data that these are sources of community spread because the data I see doesn't show that,” Mark said.McNamer said he's been receiving postcards and letters from people across the county supporting his choice of staying open to survive."It empowers you, it lets you know you're doing the right thing,” he said. 1967

Parked on the corner of a Kenmore, Washington brewery is a bright orange food truck. It’s called The Vet Chef and inside is a former Marine with a passion for food.“The restaurant is a lot like the military,” said Chef Kyle Gourlie.“You have to do things at a certain time, follow the orders of the head chef,” said fellow veteran, Paul Welling, who worked at The Vet Chef for several years.Marine Corps Veteran Kyle Gourlie is used to following orders. “I did one tour to Ramadi, Iraq. I was a machine gunner on the top of a Humvee," he recalled. His orders look a little different these days, and he’s grateful for the new adventure. This food truck is the beginning of a new chapter, born from a love Gourlie’s had his entire life.“Aw man, I love food,” said Gourlie. “I could work a 14-hour day, wake up in the morning and start cooking food at my own house. It makes me happy. It’s my art, it’s everything to me.”The happiness he’s found now came after a long period of struggle and recovery.When Gourlie was deployed, an explosion almost killed him.“I peered over the top of my Humvee, and it was an IED. It blew me sideways. I broke my back in five places, my neck in three, and had a brain injury, but thankfully, I walked away with no scars,” recounted Gourlie.He spent two years healing, and even when he was physically ready to move on, Gourlie realized the transition to civilian life couldn’t happen overnight.“I’ve had morning routine to evening routine, every single day, planned out for me, order after order and that’s been my life. Now, I’m expected to do all this, and I don’t even know how to fill out a check, which was me, I had no concept of how to fill out a check. It’s scary," he said.It was his family who encouraged him to follow his passion into the kitchen and open The Vet Chef.“I was blessed I had a family and a wife because without them I would be lost.”But he didn’t want to stop there. Gourlie is making sure he’s hiring other vets to pay his good fortune forward.“A food truck, veteran-owned and operated that wanted to create this opportunity for other vets, and I’m like, ‘I could really get behind that’,” said Navy veteran Paul Welling.Even if their military careers made them friendly rivals, the bond Gourlie and his team share as service members is irreplaceable.“It’s been really nice to see people who have been on our truck build back into society, and I’m building with them, and it’s been wonderful,” said Gourlie.But working in this food truck is so much more than a job. Gourlie makes sure to pass on all of his culinary skills, so each of the veterans who come through here is prepared for a career for years to come.“We don’t always have that job that transitions in the civilian world, so you learn a lot of skills in the military, you can use those, but it doesn’t really give you a job path,” said Welling. “I think it’s great he wants to utilize those skills to maybe work on the food truck and maybe open up their own food truck and become masters of their own destiny.”And it’s not just professional skills these vets are learning. “Not every day is gonna be perfect,” said Welling. “One day, your generator’s going to go out in the middle of service, and I think that’s a good mantra for life: nothing is going to be perfect, but you try to help people and there’s always tomorrow.”Gourlie hopes tomorrow holds a future where this orange truck is a familiar sight across the country.“If we can ever get food trucks into vets’ hands and help them run their business, I think it’s gonna be wildly successful and get people back into society a whole lot better,” said Gourlie.It’s a mission this veteran will work tirelessly to accomplish because this comfort food feeds so much more than hunger.“They deserve every success they possibly could have because they’ve sacrificed so much,” said Gourlie. “It makes me feel blessed and honored to be a part of that.”If you'd like to learn more about The Vet Chef, click HERE. 3984
Police have made an arrest in the death of Melinda Pleskovic — a long-time Strongsville, Ohio teacher.The fiancé of Melinda's daughter has been charged with aggravated murder.Jeffrey Scullin, 20, was arrested Tuesday. His bond was set at million. (KGTV) - A Pine Valley restaurant owner is defying San Diego County orders to move his restaurant outside, saying he will continue to ignore the purple tier rules to keep his business afloat.When it was announced that San Diego County would move into the more restrictive purple tier, Major’s Diner owner Larry McNamer told ABC 10News he had plans to stay open inside, even though all restaurants are required to move outside completely. He stayed true to his word, operating indoors, saying he still follows social distancing practices, but needs the inside space because his restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch, and the winter months bring temperatures in the 30s for the mountain community.“They’re saying they wanted us back outside and we said no absolutely not, not going to do it,” said McNamer.RELATED: "We are over it." Pine Valley restaurant plans to defy county orderHe said after his plans to stay open inside were shared with the community, people made a point to order from him the first weekend in support.“We had people coming in from the North County saying they were coming in just to support us for staying open. It was really nice to see that there was a lot of people that care about the businesses and want us to stay open and are willing to fight alongside us for this thing,” McNamer said.He added that in the first two days of openly defying the tier, the only interaction he’s had with the County or officials has been one call from his health inspector.“He was just wondering what our intentions really were. His boss had asked him to call me and ask where we’re standing on this,” said McNamer.McNamer said he has no plans to close his indoor operations, even if he receives warnings. He said if the County decides to fine him, they won’t be receiving any money from him.“Great, bring it on. I can barely pay my bills now, where do you think that money is going to come from. You won’t get it,” he said.He is not alone. Other business owners in San Diego have similar frustrations. A reopen rally is set for Monday afternoon at the County Administration Building.
