BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao warned on Saturday that the global financial turmoil will make it harder for China to maintain the pace of its economic development in the near future.     China is under growing tension from its large population, limited resources and environment problems, and needs faster reform of its economic growth pattern to achieve sustainable development, said Hu when addressing members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.     The nation should maintain a stable and relatively fast economic growth, accelerate structural readjustment for sustainable development, and stick to reform and opening up, said Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.     Efforts should be made to solve problems that concern the people's fundamental interests, in order to achieve healthy and rapid economic and social development and improve people's living, the CPC chief said.     Hu also underlined the importance of efficient resource utilization and environmental protection in China's industrialization and modernization strategy, and asked for the overall development in both rural and urban areas.     The nation should not only seek fast and sound economic growth, but also promote the comprehensive development of society and its people, said Hu.     He also noted that with the spread of the global financial crisis, China is losing its competitive edge in the world market as international demand is reduced.     International competition is fiercer than ever and protectionism has started to increase in investment and trade, said Hu.     In October, China's export growth slowed to 19.2 percent from 21.5 percent in September.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on Sunday pledged joint efforts to expand bilateral cooperation at their meeting here.     The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G20) summit on financial markets and the world economy.     Hu said China and Australia are witnessing healthy and rapid development of bilateral ties, with ever deepening mutual understanding and trust. Marked achievements have been secured in the mutually beneficial cooperation in trade, energy, environmental protection, technology, education, culture, law enforcement and tourism, he said. ALGIERS, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Algeria voiced commitment here Wednesday to step up bilateral strategic and cooperative relations and called for intensified cooperation in fields such as infrastructure, energy and resource exploration.     In his meeting with Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo called Algeria as "an important cooperation partner," noting that China highly values its strategic and cooperative relations with Algeria.     China and Algeria are both developing countries and share common aspiration to develop their economies to improve the welfare of their peoples, said Wu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC).     He noted that China will join hands with the Algerian side to cement the bilateral cooperation in long-term and strategic perspectives.     He proposed the two nations should work closer in fields such as infrastructure construction, energy, resource exploration and establish an economic and trade cooperation zone.     "We should encourage our enterprises to work together on some big and important projects to improve the quality and level of the China-Algeria cooperation," Wu added.     "The Chinese government will encourage Chinese enterprises to establish business and invest in Algeria, adopt open policy on technology transfer to Algeria and launch various training programs for Algerian personnel in an effort to contribute to Algeria's economic structure adjustment and employment enlargement," the Chinese top legislator said.     Agreeing with Wu's proposal, Ouyahia said that the Algerian government has a sincere will to learn from China and boost bilateral cooperation and mutual investment to help the country's economic transformation and realize sustainable development. BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or the Cabinet, said on Wednesday that more efforts would be made to encourage enterprises to upgrade technology and engage in independent innovation.     It also said there would be policies to promote merger and acquisition among enterprises.     The policies were clinched at an executive meeting of the State Council, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao. The meeting was held to discuss measures to address difficulties faced by enterprises and promote economic growth and deliberate plans to reform finished oil pricing mechanism and fuel taxes and fees.     According to the meeting, plans would be drawn up to help some key industries, including steel, auto, ship manufacturing, petrochemical, light industry, textile, nonferrous metals, equipment manufacturing and information technology.     The meeting urged banks to increase credit supply to help small and medium enterprises overcome difficulties.     To offset adverse global economic conditions, the State Council on Nov. 9 has announced a 4 trillion yuan (585.7 billion U.S. dollars) stimulus package to boost domestic demand. This will be combined with other boosting measures, such as loosening credit conditions and cutting taxes.     The huge amount of money will be spent over the next two years to finance programs in 10 major areas, such as low-income housing, rural infrastructure, water, electricity, transportation, the environment, technological innovation and rebuilding after several disasters, most notably the May 12 earthquake.     The State Council also discussed the reform plans of finished oil pricing mechanism and fuel tax and fees at the meeting. It decided to make public the two draft reform plans to solicit public advice.     According to the National Development and Reform Commission, the government has been studying a fuel tax to replace the current road tolls imposed upon vehicles.     The long-awaited fuel tax and fee reform was first proposed in 1994.     The State Council meeting also reached decisions to increase the storage of key materials and resources, accelerate development of the service industry and enhance measures to promote employment and social security.     More education and job training would be provided among the government's efforts to increase employment. This education and training should also cover the lay-off workers and rural laborers who returned from cities because of unemployment, according to the meeting.
