Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced late Friday that the US government will extend a federal student loan forbearance on borrowers for an additional month as more businesses are closing due to a surge in coronavirus cases. This means that payments of federal student loans will not be due in January.The decision does not impact private student loans, which have generally still required repayment by Americans during the pandemic.While the federal student loan forbearance is scheduled to end on January 31, President-elect Joe Biden has discussed taking more permanent action on reducing the student loan burden on millions of Americans.Federal student loans were placed on forbearance in March. In August, President Donald Trump directed DeVos to extend the forbearance through the end of 2020. While those who wanted to continue making student loan payments were able to continue doing so, automatic payments of federal student loans stopped early in the pandemic as unemployment levels jumped to record levels.Amid the forbearance period, the federal government was not charging interest on borrowers."The coronavirus pandemic has presented challenges for many students and borrowers, and this temporary pause in payments will help those who have been impacted," said DeVos. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A 16-year-old is battling life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a vehicle in the East County.The teenager was hit by the vehicle at about 8 p.m. Monday near the intersection of East Washington Avenue and Waterloo Ave., El Cajon police said.Police arrived to find the teenager unconscious in the road and transported him to a nearby hospital. The identification of the victim is being withheld, police said.Police added that the teen was with three other male teenagers, who had been running south across East Washington Ave. outside of a crosswalk when the collision occurred. The driver of the Toyota Rav4 that struck the victim remained at the scene and has been cooperating with authorities. Police said they don't believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.Witnesses told 10News the intersection can be dangerous for pedestrians in the area. 921

(KGTV) - A husband pleaded guilty Tuesday to trying to poison his wife with a heavy metal at their East County home, court officials said.Race Uto, 27, admitted to three counts of premeditated attempted murder in an El Cajon courtroom, according to San Diego County District Attorney's office spokesperson Tanya Sierra.Prosecutors said Uto gave his wife thallium, a metal found in rat poison and ant killers.RELATED: Warrant reveals troubled marriage in poisoning case10News obtained a search warrant indicating Brigida Uto became mysteriously ill in September 2017. She suffered weakness and hair loss, and was eventually near death, according to the warrant. Friends also indicated in a GoFundMe account she suffered nerve and organ damage.Investigators with the FBI, NCIS and San Diego County HazMat determined Brigida had been poisoned by someone with access to her food and drinks. The warrant also showed that Race had an affair while he was deployed in the Navy, and that the couple had gone through counseling.Race Uto was arrested in March 2018. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Mar. 14.Brigida Uto is a special education teacher in the Mountain Empire School District and the mother of a young boy, according to the GoFundMepage. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Over the course of the Pandemic, sisters Berlin and Bristol Dixon kept their favorite extra-curricular activity going strong. The two created "East County Kids News" as a way to keep doing school news, even while school was canceled.When in-person learning resumed in the fall, the girls went their separate ways, with Berlin going to Los Coches Creek Middle School and Bristol at WD Hall Elementary. But they took what they learned from EC Kids News and used it to make their school newscasts better."I feel like we have a lot more resources," says Berlin. "We learned how to work with computers a lot more ever break. So, when we returned, we knew a lot more about iMovie and all the stuff you need to know for broadcast."But, beyond the technical improvements they brought back to campus, the girls say they learned how important their work had been to keep the community together."I have learned that kids are resilient and they can go above and beyond," says Bristol. "And that when you want something you can go for it.""It's really taught us how amazing our community is," says Berlin. "Also that it's really important to stay connected with everyone, because it has been a rough time but when we connect it makes that rough time not as hard."Their efforts have impressed teachers at both schools."For them to find the silver lining in the cloud is is inspiring to to everyone," says Laura Albright, a teacher at WD Hall. "You always set your expectation high for your students, but they totally surpassed anything we could think of."The only downside to returning to campus is losing the chance to co-anchor as sisters.
