SAN DIEGO (Daily Aztec) - San Diego State men’s basketball returned in triumphant fashion to the friendly confines of Viejas Arena, defeating Jackson State 87-44 in front of a crowd of 10,453 on Tuesday night.SDSU (4-2), just six days removed from competing in the Maui Invitational in Maui, Hawaii, scored the first 11 points and never trailed in a wire-to-wire victory over the Tigers.In Maui, SDSU came away victorious against defending Big East champion Xavier, but struggled in losses to Duke and Iowa State, falling by deficits of 30 and 26 points, respectively.  Head coach Brian Dutcher said the game was a chance for the Aztecs to show what they were made of, following tough defeats.“We were challenged against Xavier and came back, we were challenged against Iowa State and didn’t fight hard enough,” Dutcher said. “So I said this is the next challenge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Military families sent 10News letters discussing a myriad of issues their students faced when they transferred from out of state into San Diego Unified School District.One student, who didn't want to be identified, sent a letter that read in part, "I would dread getting up everyday knowing that this was going to be a continuous process," explaining he didn't get the same treatment in an assistance program here, compared to where he previously lived.Another letter discusses a woman's special needs children, "It took over a week to even get my children placed in classrooms to start school with no updates as to why. After calling several times we were able to get placements for our children. I know that special needs children have to be placed in certain classrooms and things like that, but for it to take that long is a little excessive." She continued stating in the letter, "two of our children are waitlisted (with no foreseeable date of service) for speech therapy with a letter stating that it is because there is a "lack of available therapists" in the area."Erika Bradley said her daughter had trouble transferring AP and Honors credits, and once she was pulled out to be home schooled, she was told her daughter couldn't participate on the Varsity Soccer team."It put her in a tailspin... We had many instances of panic attacks," she said."We have upwards of 8,000 military dependent students within our district," Jennifer Coronel, Program Manager of Children and Youth in Transition at SDUSD said. That's about 7% of the district's student population.On SDUSD's website, you can find numerous resources for military families. The district gets anywhere from ,000,000 to ,000,100 in military student funding per year. "We have four Intervention Counselors that work out of the Department of Children and Youth in Transition and all of them have a specific area within San Diego Unified and assist with all matters related to military students," Coronel said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) -- Opening statements will likely begin Thursday morning in the retrial of Kellen Winslow II, who is charged with raping a woman in Encinitas and an unconscious teen in Scripps Ranch in 2003. Winslow was previously convicted of raping a homeless woman and exposing himself to two others. After a week of deliberations, the Vista jury found Winslow guilty of raping a woman in Encinitas and exposing himself to two others, but deadlocked on eight other charges. Those charges included rape and kidnapping in connection with two other women. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Delta passenger mauled by an emotional support dog has filed a lawsuit against the airline and the dog's owner, a Marine combat veteran.In June 2017, Marlin Jackson boarded a San Diego-bound flight in Atlanta headed for a work conference. Soon after, fellow passengers watched in horror as a brutal dog attack played out in front of them.Jackson sat in a window seat. In the middle seat was a Marine veteran was with an emotional support dog, a chocolate lab pointer mix, in his lap. According to a Jackson's just-filed lawsuit, while he was securing his seat belt, "the animal began to growl."RELATED: Service dog or pet? The lawsuit states the dog was briefly restrained, before pinning Jackson against the window and mauling Jackson again, resulting in 28 stitches and permanent loss of sensation in his face. He bled so profusely that "an entire row of seats had to be removed."The incident sparked national headlines, and tighter policies for emotional support and service animals. For example, Delta now requires proof of training, adding rules for the types and ages of the animals, as well the duration of flights that allow emotional support animals.Delta declined to comment citing pending litigation.
