Problems with violence in past years have caused some to be critical of the event. VISTA (CNS) - Ex-NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II, who is awaiting trial on charges of raping two women in Encinitas and raping an unconscious teenage girl, is being held without bail on newly filed misdemeanor charges related to alleged lewd conduct with a 77-year-old woman at a Carlsbad gym.Winslow, who had been out of custody on million bail in connection with his felony case, is accused of touching himself and asking the woman if she liked it on Feb. 13, then groping her while she was in a hot tub at the same gym on Feb. 22, according to police and prosecutors.The 35-year-old son of former San Diego Chargers legend Kellen Winslow, who's being held at the Vista Detention Facility, pleaded not guilty Monday to a pair of lewd conduct counts and one count each of elder abuse and battery of an elder.He faces life in prison if convicted in the felony case, which involves allegations that he raped a 17-year-old girl in 2003 at a home in Scripps Ranch; lured a 54-year-old transient -- who was hitchhiking -- into his Hummer for a ride, then raped her on March 17, 2018; and that he raped a 59- year-old homeless woman on May 13, 2018, then threatened to kill her if she told anyone.He appeared in a Vista courtroom today on a defense motion to dismiss the felony complaint, in which he's charged with kidnapping, forcible rape and rape of an unconscious person. A judge denied the request with the exception of one kidnapping count, finding insufficient evidence that the victim was transported under force or fear prior to the alleged rape.Deputy District Attorney Dan Owens said that he will seek to have the misdemeanor counts consolidated into the main case during Winslow's next court hearing on March 29.Winslow II grew up in San Diego and attended the University of Miami. VISTA (CNS) - A man was shot in the knee by someone in a passing car while walking in a Vista neighborhood, authorities said Saturday.The 38-year-old victim said he was walking at about midnight Friday in the 1100 block of North Santa Fe Avenue and looked down to retrieve an item from a bag, according to Sgt. Adrian Moses of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.As he looked down, he heard a loud bang and fell to the ground with a gunshot wound to his knee, Moses said.A witness heard the gunshot and saw a white Nissan Sentra driven by a woman with a male passenger leave the area on North Santa Fe Avenue, the sergeant said.The victim was taken to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Moses said.There was no surveillance video immediately available and detectives from the Vista sheriff's station were investigating the shooting. 903

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A backyard workshop in Vista caught fire Sunday afternoon, according to Vista Fire officials. Neighbors said they saw thick black smoke towering into the sky and heard almost a dozen explosions.Neighbor John Ploetz said it sounded, "like a bomb, people up the street heard it.""It takes a minute you know, your brain goes oh it's probably fine, or he's welding you know and then I see there's flames, and no firemen here, and the fence is on fire, I better call 9-1-1," Ploetz said he grabbed his garden hose and worked to contain the fire. He wet down nearby foliage and put out small spot fires on the outside of the fence.Fire officials said the fire started around 12:32 p.m. and arrived at the home in the 1000 block of Ora Avo Drive in minutes. Ploetz said what he did was something anyone would do and he was concerned the fire would spread to other homes nearby. He was shocked when a pine tree burned up in seconds, "it just whoosh! Went up like a torch, it was loud, that was before the firemen got here."The workshop contained propane tanks, and tools for metal art that the homeowner creates as a hobby. The family was at church when the fire started and were thankful no one was hurt. Among the valuables they lost were three boats and a motor home.Firefighters are still investigating the cause. 1340

WASHINGTON — Hundreds of demonstrators gathered around the White House for a “noise demonstration and dance party” to try to drown out President Donald Trump’s speech accepting the Republican presidential nomination. Later, a crowd enveloped U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky as he left the convention and demanded that he acknowledge police shooting victim Breonna Taylor. The crowd surrounded Paul as he returned to his hotel in Washington after attending Trump's address at the White House.
