CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Coronado residents who felt the need for speed found themselves stuck in traffic Monday as a prop fighter jet from the Top Gun sequel was moved on city streets. The F-14 fighter was hauled through traffic to the Coronado Bridge on its way to East San Diego County about 9 p.m. A witness stuck in the backup told 10News it was a tight squeeze on the small streets. “They had to do a little backing up, and back and forth for a few minutes,” Emily Foster said. “It finally pulled through and missed a parked car by inches.” The jet, which belongs to the San Diego Air and Space Museum Gillespie Field Annex, was used for the filming of Top Gun 2 at Naval Air Station North Island over the winter. During filming, the F-14 never took flight. “You’ll see it move in the movie, but that’s movie stuff,” said Annex manager Jeff Eads. Crews disassembled the jet for its trip from Coronado to East County. “Take wings off of it, the elevators, the horizontal stabilizers,” said Eads, who had the job of putting it back together.Photos posted on the SDASM Annex Facebook page showed the fighter jet being returned to Gillespie Field with the unique Top Gun markings on its side.Air and Space Museum officials were not able to disclose details about the terms of the plane's involvement in the movie. 1324

Communities are still rebuilding after a Category 4 Hurricane Laura hit Louisiana in August.“I feel like I was coming to a third-world country when we came back," described Pam Abshire when she returned to southeast Louisiana home following the storm.As she assessed the damage to her home, Abshire began picking up shards of glass from the windows that were blown out by the hurricane.Abshire is an elementary school art teacher. She says she plans to use the glass for a project at school."They’ll have something to remember and they can hang on to," she said.The year 2020 has proven that Mother Nature knows how to challenge those who live in places like the Gulf Coast.In October, Hurricane Delta brought flooding, wind, and more pain to those who are still trying to clean up after Hurricane Laura less than two months ago.Dr. Tyson Green's home was destroyed by Laura and he doesn't know where his family of six will call home next. His family evacuated ahead of the storm, but he stayed behind to care for his patients. Now, he's raising thousands of dollars for frontline medical workers who lost everything in the storms.Other businesses, who were already struggling through the pandemic, are trying to stay afloat.As a man with a guitar plays upbeat music outside Jason Machulski's downtown Lake Charles market, business is giving him a positive outlook.Like many business owners this year, the pandemic has been a fight.“We provided toilet paper, essentials, meat, bread, cleaning supplies, but it hit us financially pretty bad," Machulski recalled.Hurricane Laura knocked his power out for a month. CLEVELAND, Ohio — An 11-year-old boy stole his parents' SUV and led police on a high-speed before crashing it late Sunday night, Brooklyn, Ohio police confirmed Monday.WEWS television station has confirmed, through a police report, that this is the same boy who at 10 years old led Ohio State Highway Patrol on a 100 mph chase last fall.It started at 10:59 p.m. when Brooklyn police saw a black Dodge Durango pull into the driveway of a former city fire station. The 11-year-old fled from police and traveled out of the fire station and onto Memphis Avenue.Police pursued the vehicle heading eastbound on Memphis Avenue to Pearl Road.The 11-year-old continued to drive recklessly, reaching speeds higher than 70 mph. When Parma Heights police received a call from the boy's father at 11:06 p.m., saying his son was driving the Dodge Durango, officers from the Brooklyn Police Department canceled the pursuit.At 11:30 p.m., police spoke to the boy's father who received a call telling him that his son crashed into a parked truck in the area of 958 West Schaff in Cleveland.The boy was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center with minor injuries. He told officers that he was not being pursued when he crashed into the SUV.Felony charges will be filed on the driver in juvenile court, police said. 1325

Congress passed a bipartisan bill to address the opioid epidemic, and this week the president signed it into law. It's one of the few things that brought Democrats and Republicans together.“Opioids is definitely an issue where there's a lot of bipartisan agreement,” says Republican strategist Brian Bartlett. “We saw the Senate pass their version 99-1. The House also overwhelmingly passed legislation back in June the first time around to address this issue.”Democratic strategist Brandon Neal agrees, saying the issue of opioids is a bipartisan issue affecting everyone.On average, a person dies from an opioid overdose every eight minutes, according to the CDC.“Right now, we're in a point in our society where every average person, everyday person, is affected by this,” Neal says. “So, one pill kills.”The impact of the problem is so big, it forced both political parties to come together to pass a bill that will boost programs to treat addictions, keep a closer eye on prescriptions and promote research to find new drugs that are not as addictive.“I think the next step is to start enacting some of the changes this legislation offered, because in a lot of ways, this was a comprehensive bill, but we need to see what's going to be most effective and what works,” Bartlett says.Just this week, there was a small glimmer of hope. Community Health Centers that serve hundreds of thousands of San Diegans are now dealing with millions of dollars in federal cuts.So far, they've instituted a hiring freeze and put expansion plans on hold. But if Congress doesn't act soon, those cuts could force the centers to reduce hours starting in January. "We pray that it won't," said Giselle Brown, who goes to the La Maestra Community Health Center in City Heights for basic medical care. "People would be left out, they wouldn't be getting the proper help or care that they need."La Maestra is part of the Health Center Partners of Southern California network, consisting of 17 low-cost clinics in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside Counties.The Federal Government subsidizes centers like it around the country with about billion a year. But about 70 percent of that is expiring, and the first funds disappeared Sept. 30. Congress has not renewed it.However, the House is scheduled to vote Friday on a bipartisan bill that would extend the funds for two years. Vernita Todd, a V.P. for the health center system of Southern California, says she's concerned the bill may not get out of the Senate - and the January deadline of reducing services is only getting closer. Brown says she hopes the funding is restored, not just for her, but for her community.    1376
