For these high school seniors, the pool has become their life. So much so, the twin brothers, Cade and Zachary Griffith, both just committed to play water polo in college.The brothers say their decision on where to go to school was tough and overwhelming, but they both decided on Austin College, in Sherman, Texas. “So lucky; we got lucky on that, says the twin’s mom, Lisa Griffith. Their choice was unexpected, because they'd never heard of Austin College before hiring the college athlete recruiting company NCSA. NCSA recruiters knew of Austin College’s plan to start a new water polo program this fall and that they were in need of team members. Lisa Strasman, president and COO of NCSA, and her team help student-athletes navigate the recruitment process. “A lot of kids think the only schools that offer their sport are those they see on ESPN,” Strasman says. “Reality [is] there's so many college opportunities across the country.” NCSA and other companies like it take the student's GPA, sport and education interests and pour through thousands of schools to find the ones that may be a good fit. They then make videos introducing student-athletes to coaches. “People think that college coaches will just discover them. In most cases, that's not reality,” Strasman says. “It's very important that student athletes are proactive."The Griffith's paid ,000 for each of their sons, but NCSA helps families for free, if their parents qualify as low-income. Many of NCSA’s employees are former athletes or college coaches. Online reviews about athlete recruitment companies are mixed. Some families say they have successfully navigated the recruitment process themselves. "I think everybody's situation is different. For us, it was definitely an investment," says Lisa Griffith. Her sons are happy they had the help. “It was just a really easy process to do,” says Zachary Griffith. 1907

For U.S. Border Patrol agents who guard the area between the U.S. and the part of Mexico just south of San Diego, seeing people trying to cross the border illegally isn't uncommon."That's a daily occurrence," says Jeff Stephenson, a patrol agent. Border Patrol agents like Stephenson are tasked with protecting 60 linear miles between the two countries and 930 miles of coastline. This year, the U.S. government added 14 miles of a primary wall that stands 18-feet high. Next year, Stephenson says a 30-foot-tall secondary wall that will stand behind the primary wall it will be completed. "It gives our agents more time, because it's a much more significant challenge," Stephenson says. "This can’t be scaled the way the old primary fence could."The new bollard walls replace a system Stephenson says was easy for people to climb over. The primary wall used to be an 8 to 10-foot steel wall made from Vietnam War-era landing mats. The secondary fence was made of steel mesh. "That worked pretty well for a while," Stephenson says. "With the development of power tools and cordless power tools, smugglers could come over the primary fence and hit the secondary fence and cut through it and be gone in two minutes or less."Starting in 2015, Stephenson says agents in San Diego started to see an increase in people crossing the border illegally coming from places other than Mexico."That presents a significant challenge, because the processing of those people and as far as a government wide approach is a much more significant challenge with more time involved and more work that goes into managing someone from another country," Stephenson says. "If someone is from Mexico, it's a lot easier to bring them back to Mexico." Stephenson says the situation along this border is a crisis."When we see the large influx of people crossing the border illegally and as Border Patrol, we have no choice but to manage and deal with that," Stephenson says. He says managing the number of people attempting to come into the U.S. is overwhelming. "We simply don't have and haven't had the resources to manage that sheer number of people, not to mention we're tasked with protecting a border, enforcing the immigration laws between the ports of entry, but then we have all these sorts of people," Stephenson says. "We're supposed to house them, feed them, and continue them down the train and set them up for their cases and process them, and we've struggled to deal with the sheer number of people, so it's absolutely a crisis."As immigration continues to be a huge topic nationwide, Stephenson says people should know how important it is to protect the hundreds of miles that separate Mexico and the United States. "When you don't have border security, you're leaving yourself exposed,” he says. “You're open to anybody and anything that may want to enter the country that may do harm do us harm.”As crews continue to build miles of border fencing, Stephenson says it's only a piece to helping agents do their job. "Putting something as ‘the answer,’ that's not a realistic thing. You're going to face different challenges as time goes on, but this helps us on the front lines for Border Patrol agents and the work we do,” he says. “When you're talking about larger immigration and everything, that's for the politicians to decide. That's for them to figure out it. Our job is to secure the border and to enforce immigration laws and that’s what this helps us do, plain and simple." 3482

Former Defense Secretary James Mattis seemed to take reports of being deemed "overrated" by President Donald Trump in stride as Mattis declared himself the "Meryl Streep of generals" on Thursday.Mattis appeared Thursday at the Al Smith Dinner in New York, which is an annual gathering of the who's who of New York. Human DNA test kits are all the buzz right now, but the newest trend is DNA tests for your pet. But can you trust the results? Meet Potato. He was rescued by his owner Bart Fletjterski. "Potato was advertised as a corgi," Fletjterski says. However, that just didn’t seem right when looking at Potato. Fletjterski says he’s been trying to figure out what kind of dog Potato really is. "The guesses vary from St. Bernard mix to collie mix to Anatolian shepherd,” Fletjterski says. Fletjterski agreed to try DNA tests for pets to find out. In order to ensure accuracy, Potato’s DNA was submitted to three different companies, using their kits. The companies were Embark, Wisdom Panel and DNA My Dog. Potato’s DNA was collected by swabbing, which he was not a fan of. "What's interesting to me is that a lot of those same techniques that would be used for forensics or paternity applications are being moved into this realm of identifying the breed of dog or even identifying individual dogs," says Dr. Andrew Bonham, chair of chemistry at MSU Denver, who does a lot of DNA work. It took about a month to get the test results. According to Embark, Potato is primarily Siberian Husky, mixed with some other breeds. Wisdom Panel identified Potato as Siberian Husky, too, along with a few other breeds. Both companies provided similar test results, with some variations in the percentage and types of breed. However, the third test produced results that differed majorly from the other kits. According to DNA My Dog, Potato is not primarily Siberian Husky; he's Samoyed. So, what could cause the major differences? "There's different algorithms that are used to try to understand ancestry and different companies will use different algorithms," explains Adam Boyko, founder and chief science officer at Embark Veterinary. Embark says you can get different results based on the company’s data sets and how they analyze the data. As the data grows, so will the ability to narrow in on your dog's breed. "Over time, you can log back in and you can learn more about your dog than when you first had it," Boyko says. DNA My Dog did not want to go on camera, but they sent a statement, saying in part: "The sample taken had all of the DNA. It just didn't match well with anything."The first sample sent to DNA My Dog got contaminated, but that came as no surprise. The company asked for the sample to be sent in an envelope, while the two other companies provided a sealed container. DNA My Dog was the cheapest of the three tests.
