(KGTV)- UC San Diego Health has had a goal to increase testing since the start of this pandemic, according to Dr. David Pride, the Associate Director of Microbiology. Now, UCSD Health has started using a new testing strategy; pool testing.“We’ve really been thinking about what is it that we can do to sort of extend testing in the San Diego region,” said Pride. “Pooling is absolutely a strategy, for example, that employers can use on their employees that universities can use, for example, on their students.”As the nation faces another COVID-19 testing supply shortage, Pride said this could be one solution to conserving the current supply.“Pool testing works by taking a group of individuals and placing all of their specimens together,” he said.Instead of using one test per person, samples from several people are collected and tested together. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends pool testing to be used only when the positive rate is low enough to justify pooling.“If that pool tests negative, then you can call each individual that was in that pool negative,” said Pride. If the pool tests positive, then each person is retested individually.“We test a lot of different patient populations, so we know what the prevalence of disease is in those patient populations, and we’ve chosen to use those with the lowest prevalence of disease for our pool testing,” Pride explained. He said they are currently using a five to one strategy, meaning five people per one test.“We’ve done probably somewhere around 500 to 600 so far. The majority of the batches have been negative, we’ve had less than 10 percent of the pools test positive,” Pride said, which is what his team expected.Pride said he heard positive feedback about pool testing from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).“Just a few weeks ago, we submitted our emergency use authorization to the FDA, and we think we’re probably getting fairly close to that getting approved,” he said.Soon, pride expects to start doing more pool testing, while also speeding up the process.“Right now, we’re really working on it in a very manual fashion,” he said. “That takes a lot of time to do, so we’re in the process of automating it by bringing in machinery to do that work that people are doing right now.” 2287

A 21-year-old American student was stabbed to death in Rotterdam, Netherlands, allegedly by her roommate, police said Friday.According to a police statement, authorities received reports of a quarrel Wednesday at an apartment on Kralingse Kerklaan in Rotterdam. When they entered the apartment, the statement said, police found Sarah Papenheim with stab wounds and attempted to resuscitate her. Police said those attempts were unsuccessful, and she died of her injuries. An investigation led authorities to the suspect, Papenheim's 23-year-old roommate, who was arrested at the Eindhoven train station, the police statement said. The two had their own rooms in the apartment but shared a kitchen and bathroom, police said. The suspect was identified as Joel Schelling, a source close to the investigation said. Schelling, who is believed to be a Dutch national, appeared in court Friday, the source said.Papenheim had moved to the Netherlands to study at Erasmus University in Rotterdam."Sarah studied psychology and lived in the Netherlands since 2016. Our deepest condolences go out to all Sarah's family and friends at this poignant time. The university is shocked by this terrible incident and is taking care of upset students and employees," the university said. The Erasmus School of Social and Behavourial Sciences organized a gathering Friday for staff and students."We encourage our students and staff not to let each other (be) alone in this difficult time," the university said.Papenheim's brother died by suicide a few years ago, her former high school teacher Mitch Bahr told CNN affiliate KRCR, and Papenheim was struggling with the loss. She attended Foothill High School near Redding, California. She was supposed to come home to Minnesota, where her family lives, next week for the holidays, her friend George Moye told CNN affiliate WCCO."The thing that is going through my head is that she was coming home for Christmas, as we were all so excited to see her and to hear that she was coming back that way, and that was just tragic," Moye told the TV station.Papenheim's mother, Donee Odegard, told Minneapolis station KMSP, "I've been through this before. I've cried so much my ducts are dry. I am in the angry stage now."Regarding the roommate, Odegard told KMSP, "He'd have highs and lows, and she noticed that and I told her she needed to get out of there because something ain't right."Papenheim was an avid musician. She started going to open jam sessions around her hometown of Andover, Minnesota, when she was just 15, according to WCCO. There, she met drummer Jellybean Johnson, who became her mentor."I liked her because she hit the drums just as hard as the guys did," Johnson told WCCO. "So I nicknamed her 'Thumper.' "Bahr, Papenheim's former teacher, told KRCR, "It was a real drive for her to want to be a great female drummer. Not just be that girl drummer but be an excellent female drummer and she did that very well." 2957

A 36-year-old man who was suffering from chronic heart failure shocked doctors when he coughed up a blood clot closely resembling the bronchial tree in his right lung in late November.Georg Wieselthaler, a transplant and pulmonary surgeon at the University of California at San Francisco told the Atlantic: “We were astonished. It’s a curiosity you can’t imagine—I mean, this is very, very, very rare.”Per the New England Journal of Medicine, the man was an ICU patient at the University of San Francisco Medical Center being treated for end-stage heart failure.During the week of the patient's hospitalization, the man had periodic episodes of coughing, which progressed to one extreme coughing fit when he suddenly expelled the unusual clot. After being supplied oxygen via a tube, the man's coughing ceased two days later, leading to the removal of the tube. Unfortunately, even though the coughing ceased, his health took a turn for the worse.Despite the doctor's best efforts and the assistance of a ventrical device, the man died from heart failure a week later. The source of information in this article has been provided largely in part to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine. 1225

(KGTV) - Support has been pouring in for a California hot dog vendor who's money was seized by a University of California officer over the weekend in Berkeley.A GoFundMe for "Beto" has raised ,526 as of Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The account was started by Martin Flores, who shot the now-viral video of a University of California Police (UCPD) officer taking Beto's money and citing him. RELATED: Outcry after police take hot dog vendor's money outside UC Berkeley football gameThe UCPD officer said Beto did not have a permit to sell hot dogs outside the Cal football game on Saturday adjacent to the campus's Memorial Stadium. The video soon prompted an outcry from the Internet at large."Yeah, this is law and order in action," the officer could be seen saying in the video. "That's how it works."The officer then takes the money, which was booked into evidence.Since the video was released, UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor Scott Bidd issued a statement saying they, "have instructed our officers to monitor illegal vending outside our event venues. This action has been motivated at least in part by issues of public health, the interests of local small businesses and even human trafficking.""In addition, while I cannot comment on the specifics of this particular case, our practice is to issue warnings before giving a citation. In a case such as this, it is typical to collect any suspected illegal funds and enter them into evidence," Bidd said in a statement.Bidd added that he has assigned University of California Police Department to open an investigation into the incident and that the well-being of the community "including those from our marginalized communities of color, is most important to us."UCPD detained three other individuals for vending without a license during the same weekend, according to the university. All were released with a warning.Flores said via GoFundMe that a public ceremony would be hosted at a Los Angeles venue in the coming weeks to present Beto with the funds raised."All funds will go to Juan (Beto) and the efforts to support street vendors in advocacy. Thank you again for all of your support and helping us humanize street vendors and not criminalize," Flores wrote. 2268
