SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As we get into the heart of fire season, there are big concerns for neighbors who live along a former golf course. The old Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club is full of dried brush. Neighbors say they are worried the owner is letting the property become a fire hazard. Chain linked fences block off the entrances to the now-shuttered golf course. "It's looking pretty rough," says neighbor Jeffery Acogido. He's been living in his Carmel Mountain Ranch home for almost 30 years. "The course was actually here before the residences."The brush from the site comes right up to neighbors backyards. As we continue to see, warmer weather neighbors say the unwanted vegetation is becoming a fire hazard. "The community is really concerned that it's just going to be a matter of time that something unfortunate might happen."There have been talks of developing the land. 10News made calls to speak with the owner about the neighbor's concerns but haven't heard back. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With home prices skyrocketing San Diegans are turning to remodeling.However, if the home has lead paint or asbestos, it can become a health hazard if not handled correctly. The Environmental Protection Agency is cracking down on companies breaking the rules.The agency has taken action against six companies in Arizona and California for allegedly violating regulations requiring them to protect the public from exposure to lead. The companies paid a combined 7,000 in penalties.According to the EPA, "an inspection found that, between 2014 and 2015, Renovation Realty performed renovation work at six homes in San Diego and Santee without being EPA-certified to perform work in pre-1978 housing where lead-based paint is assumed to be present." The agency says the company also failed to keep records indicating compliance with lead-safe work practices and did not ensure a certified renovator was involved as required."Looking back at it, it was a painful expensive experience to get fined by the EPA" said Keith Christian CEO of Renovation Realty.Christian said, at the time, they didn't understand the EPA's requirements of how much square footage you can disturb per room."We got fined, we paid the fine, we all went to a class we got certified as a company our supervisors got certified and it's been a great experience,” Christian said. “So now that we understand the process we incorporated that into our renovation.”Across the county from October 2016 through September 2017, the EPA finalized 121 civil settlements for alleged violations of at least one of the lead-based paint rules. The settlements they obtained in the cases soared past one million dollars. The EPA requires companies who perform abatement projects in pre-1978 homes to be certified and follow specific work practices.“For a homeowner, the biggest thing is their liability,” said Tim Tilley with Superior Abatement Services Inc. “If they hire a contractor who doesn’t follow the rules, the regulatory agencies will generally cite everyone in the food chain.”Tilley removes hazardous material like lead and asbestos for a living. His team is currently working on a San Diego home that tested negative for lead but positive for asbestos.Tilley tells 10News rules put in place at the federal level down to the local level are there to protect employees and consumers."For a homeowner, it's really important to ask the right questions,” said Gregg Cantor with Murray Lampert Design - Build – Remodel.Cantor says consumers should know if the contractor is licensed and certified and trained to perform hazardous materials work.Consumers also want to ask about types of safety methods they use, digging into specific safety precautions before, during and after the work is done. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --Lanes of the southbound 805 freeway were closed Friday night, after a major crash north of the Home Avenue exit. San Diego police confirm an officer was nearly hit by a car while responding to the accident and made an urgent call for backup.The blue, four-door sedan involved in the crash was smashed up against an embankment when the 10News crew got to the scene. 10News Anchor Brian Shlonsky posted on the southbound 94, near the onramp to the 805, where officers were flagging traffic to notify them of the closure.  566

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A San Diego Couple is breaking the internet after getting married at a Costco in Mission Valley Thursday. Margot Schein and Julian Parris told 10News they made the decision to get married at Costco because, after meeting on a dating app, they decided to have their first date at the store. According to Schein, the couple decided to wed at Costco on their three-year anniversary. The wedding included a custom-made cake from the store, an archway and pallets to hold up bouquets of flowers. Staff at the store even took the time to set up chairs for the event as well as decorate a portion of the Costco with rose petals. “I feel like we have a whole new Costco family,” Margot said. 720

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV)— With precipitation numbers up, participation numbers were down for outdoor events around San Diego County. But many who chose to endure the rain said it was worth the extra splash. It’s a rare sight in the heart of San Diego: kids sledding on a giant snowy hill at Montgomery Waller Park. For the Murillo family, it’s an annual tradition. “We go to see Santa Claus, we go to the little stores that they have there, and we come to sled down for a little bit,” mother Diane Murillo said. She and her children were bundled up while having fun at San Diego Snow Day. But this year, Murillo noticed that the crowds were much smaller. “It’s a lot smaller. It’s empty today. There’s actually parking,” Murillo laughed. She said the steady rain discouraged many folks from showing up. The City of San Diego even had to cancel Santa Claus’ helicopter fly-over of the park, due to inclement weather. Murillo also noticed that the snowy hill was very sludgy, and only about half its normal length. But by the looks of the children, the event was still worth it. Meanwhile, in the South Bay, there was a tent full of Christmas-themed games. From Candy Cane trees, ring tosses, to face paint, families enjoyed the free entertainment at the Chula Vista Children’s Faire. “It helps, because that way, we’re not getting wet while they are getting their stuff done and doing the activities. So it’s nice,” mother Felice Navarro said. Her neighbor invited her and her children to join them at the fair this year. The kids also had an option to splash around if they wanted, as they ran through an obstacle course as Chula Vista junior firefighters. Fun was not just reserved for children. Up at Liberty Station, hundreds of people waited in line to join the San Diego BBQ and Beer festival. 25-year-old Victoria Ransom was not going to let the rain dampen her birthday celebration. “We wanted to be able to double fist if that was a possibility. Hands-free rain protection,” Ransom joked. She said she bought eight rainbow-colored umbrella hats online, the moment she found out about the weather. “You drink, you eat, it’s great,” Ransom said. “I got a nice pour because it’s my birthday, and we’re having a great time.” 2243
