After eliminating free samples at its locations in March due to the spread of the coronavirus, Costco said on its quarterly earnings call this week that it plans on resuming samples in mid-June. Costco has made significant changes within stores in recent months due to the virus. Costco resumed May 4 after reducing hours, but is now requiring customers and employees to wear masks. Costco has also placed limits on some fresh meats. “We're going to start doing some things in mid-June on a slow rollout basis in sampling,” Costco CFO Richard Galanti said. “I can't tell you anymore, but needless to say it’s not going to be where you go and just pick up an open sample with your fingers. Sampling both food and non-food items are popular.”Galanti said resuming sampling is important in making customers excite to return to Costco stores. Sam’s Club also made a similar decision in March to eliminate samples in stores. 932

An Alaska dentist, who gained notoriety after he was seen in a video riding a hoverboard and pulling teeth, was convicted of defrauding the Alaska Medicaid program. Seth Lookhart was convicted Friday of 46 counts of felony medical assistance fraud and scheming to defraud, plus misdemeanor counts of illegally practicing dentistry and reckless endangerment. The conviction followed a five-week bench trial before Anchorage Superior Court Judge Michael Wolverton, who wrote the state's evidence was overwhelming. The felony charges carry a possible sentence of up to 10 years in prison. 597

ALBANY, N.Y. -- In New York’s capital region, just 20 minutes north of the state capital building, is Tech Valley Office Interiors and Rod Dion who has owned the small business for 15 years.“It’s been quite a ride,” said Dion. “We opened up, we were very successful our first three years, then the great recession hit and we had four or five years we prefer not to look back at and ever since then, it has been a happily steady rise again.” Like many small businesses in America, Tech Valley has enjoyed growth in this economy. However, with the upside has come a downside of a tight labor market.“Before, I would just put an ad up and I would have 50 resumes and have a person within a day or two,” Dion explained. “Now, I can go 30 days and I will get two or three resumes and they are not even qualified for the position.”Tech Valley is a part of the 88 percent of small businesses across the country that report struggling to hire qualified workers in a labor market where there are more available jobs than people looking for work. The Department of Labor and Statistics estimates there are 6.4 million jobs available but only 5.89 million people seeking work. Employees have an advantage and are forcing all employers to get competitive to actually hire good talent.Tech Valley is in that position currently, trying to hire at least two full-time positions. “We are paying a lot more than we did in the past,” said Dion. “We are probably paying about ,000 more in starting salary more, per employee, than we were 10 years ago.”Like most small businesses, Tech Valley cannot afford more significant salary increases. However, it still has to compete for new talent in this labor market and compete to keep its current staff, so it’s begun helping employees pay off their college debt. Student loan repayment is a benefit few employers offer. It can be costly, but ultimately less expensive than what it would cost the company to lose an employee or not be able to grow its staff.“The only way a business like mine is going to grow is to grow my staff, so if I can’t grow my staff, we are not going to grow as a whole,” said Dion.Stunted growth in any business could eventually lead to less profits, which would be an even bigger problem.“It is very difficult right now there is more of a strain going on than many people realize, but in many ways there have been positives out of it,” Dion explained. “Salaries have gone up and businesses understand what they have to do to respond to their needs.” 2518

Aimee Bouc knew Austin Eubanks the way few people did.“He was not so much the person he was on TV. He wasn’t so serious," she says. Aimee was once married to Eubanks. The two met as teens and went on to have two children. Many knew Eubanks as a survivor of the 1999 Columbine shooting. He was shot in the hand and knee in the attack. He battled the impact of addiction and trauma over the 20 years that passed since the shooting. “I turned to substances to cope. That was the answer for me," Eubanks said in an interview in April for a story marking two decades since Columbine. Eubanks became a national spokesperson. He gave talks about his struggle becoming a beacon for others struggling the way he did. "I think it’s really important that not only as survivors of trauma, but survivors of addiction, speak out and share their stories," Eubanks said in April, "You never know when your story is going to change the life of somebody else."Austin wasn't able to fully escape the darkness of addiction. In May he was found dead in his home, the victim of an overdose. "There was so much pressure put on him to be this perfect person in the eyes of the world," Aimee says. "He didn’t feel he could actually go and get the treatment when he did go back to it.”In the months leading up to his death, Aimee suspected he was using again. “I believe there was always a fight. I don’t believe he was always using, believe that was more recently, Aimee says. "It never stops being a struggle. I don’t think addiction is something you can just stop struggling one day it’s always a work in progress." Now, as opioid companies face several lawsuits over the opioid crisis, Aimee says Austin would want more. “He wouldn’t want it to stop there," Aimee says. "In America, I believe strongly we need to start tackling and treating mental health and anxiety, depression, anything, any kind of problems. Almost like a dental check up in terms of insurance."Aimee knows progress in fighting the opioid crisis is too late for Austin, but she believes his life will still help others. "His story and the power behind Columbine really put him front and center of the opioid addiction and his TED talks and everything that he did," she said. "He brought a complete level of awareness and helped so many people and I've read their comments on how he helped them shape their lives. It just brought me tears of joy.”Aimee recently launched 2431

A Phoenix Suns fan is facing charges after cursing at team owner Robert Sarver during a game and later confronting an officer as he was removed from the arena.Police say Jeffrey Camill Whitley was seated near Sarver inside Talking Stick Resort Arena during the Phoenix Suns-New Orleans Pelicans game on April 5.After Sarver had sat down in his personal seats, the 18-year-old and his friends began yelling obscenities, and also reportedly called Sarver "the worst owner in the league."Court records show the arena security asked Whitley to stop, but he continued for several more minutes before having to be removed from the arena. While being escorted out of the building by Phoenix police, Whitely allegedly chest-bumped an officer, trying to push him backward. He has been charged with aggravated assault and criminal trespassing. 843
