SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A driver was killed and several teens were injured Tuesday night in a high-speed solo vehicle crash along State Route 905 in south San Diego.The crash happened on the westbound lanes near the Beyer Boulevard off-ramp about 9:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The driver lost control of the dark-colored Chrysler 300, struck the center divide, and was ejected from the car. The victim was declared dead at the scene. It was initially reported that the driver, a 21-year-old male, was a teenager. Firefighters worked to extricate two passengers trapped in the rear passenger seats, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.The injured victims, three males and two females ranging in age between 15- to 21-years-old, were transported to UCSD and Scripps Mercy for their injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time.CHP officers are investigating if drugs, alcohol, or distracted driving contributed to the crash.Investigators are asking anyone that witnessed the crash to contact the California Highway Patrol.The Beyer Boulevard on-ramp to the westbound state Route 905 was shut down until at least midnight, according to the CHP. 1191

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 13-year old girl, waiting for her mother to pick her up in Grant Hill, was attacked by a knife-wielding man Friday afternoon.San Diego Police are now using surveillance videos in their search for the suspect, who yanked a gold necklace from the teen's neck before making his getaway near the intersection of 26th and K Street.The girl wasn't hurt, but parents like Elizabeth Alvarado, whose twin 12-year-old daughters walk by that same spot each day, are hoping he doesn't strike again.Alvarado saw surveillance video after the principal of her daughters' school sent parents a link, suggesting they talk to their kids about staying safe.Andy Trakas of Albert Einstein Charter Middle School said the girl who was attacked wasn't one of his students, but there are several other schools in the neighborhood."We decided to be very, very proactive because the safety of our students," said Trakas, adding that all children in the community are a concern."These things can happen anywhere," Trakas said. "They can happen in La Jolla, they can happen in City Heights, they can happen in Del Sur or La Mesa, whatever, but, by being part of the community we can all work together to make sure that our eyes and ears are open so we can find out who this person is and make this place a better, safer community for our kids."Trakas suggested parents talk to their kids about being aware of their surroundings and the importance of staying in groups, not alone, after school. San Diego Police stepped up patrols in Grant Hill after school and are following every lead to catch the thief.The suspect is describe as a black male five feet, eight inches tall with a stocky build who was wearing a plain black hooded sweatshirt, a black cloth covering the lower portion of his face and dark-colored pants. Authorities say the suspect was driving a white Hyundai Elantra  (pictured below.) 1919

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved grandmother and community icon has been taken off life support, days after a hit-and-run crash in Logan Heights."Always really happy, an outgoing person," said Brianda Ramos.Maria Estrada Romero, 52, was a mother of five and a grandmother of five."Really sad. It's been really bad," said Ramos, Estrada Romero's daughter. RELATED: Woman critically injured in Logan Heights crashRamos remembers the crippling call late Friday morning. Family members rushed to the hospital after learning Estrada Romero had been struck by a hit-and-run driver. She was walking near Cesar Chavez Parkway, headed to a bus stop. According to police, a white Ford F-150 turning right onto Kearney Avenue climbed onto the sidewalk and hit her, before taking off."The driver never got out of the truck. Basically left her right there," said Ramos. The scene that first day at the hospital: a packed emergency room, as family, friends, and customers turned out."They loved her because she sold really good food," said Ramos.For more than a decade, Estrada Romero became well-known for selling tamales at parks and schools in Southcrest and Bay Terraces. Some of those customers heard about the crash and joined the family at the hospital."In a way I was happy to know they were here with us, supporting us," said Estrada Romero.On Sunday night, Estrada Romero was taken off life support. Today, a family searches for justice."Needs to turn himself in and pay ... pay for what he did to my mother," said Ramos.Police say the truck had a tinted back window and a white California sticker. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Chollas View elementary school was placed on lockdown Wednesday after reports of an armed man nearby.San Diego Police were called to the area of 45th and Market streets at about 9:30 a.m. over the reported suspect. Chollas-Mead Elementary School was placed on lockdown as police searched the area.Officers arrested an armed man at the scene and were searching for a second suspect who fled the scene, believed to possibly be armed as well, police said.Chollas-Mead Elementary's lockdown was lifted as of 11 a.m. while police continued their search.The outstanding suspect is described as a 6-foot-tall black man, in his 20s, last seen wearing a black shirt and light blue pants, SDPD told City News Service. 736
