BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's exports surged by 48.5 percent year on year in May, while the imports climbed 48.3 percent, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) announced Thursday. The growth rate for exports was 18.1 percentage points up from the figure for April, and the import growth rate dipped slightly from 49.7 percent reported in April.Exports totalled 131.76 billion U.S. dollars in May, said a statement on the GAS website, adding imports topped 112.23 billion U.S. dollars.Total foreign trade value rose 48.4 percent from a year earlier to 243.99 billion U.S. dollars in May. The figure was even 10.2 percent higher than May 2008 before the global financial crisis began, the statement said. Photo taken on June 8, 2010 shows the colossal chemicals-transport ship of Attilio Ievoli, which is manufactured by the Rushan Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for export to Italy, taking water at its launching ceremony, at Rushan, east China's Shandong Province. Exports were up 9.2 percent from May in 2008 and imports grew 11.4 percent. From January to May, the total value of foreign trade rose 44 percent year on year to 1.1 trillion U.S. dollars.Exports were up 33.2 percent to 567.74 billion U.S. dollars and imports rose 57.5 percent to 532.35 billion U.S. dollars, said the statement. The trade surplus fell 59.9 percent to 35.39 billion U.S. dollars in the first five months.
BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Ten years after it unveiled a strategy to promote growth in its western area, China announced a plan to continue the initiative, even as the world's third largest economy strives to shift to a more domestic-driven growth."The plan will not only benefit the western region, but is also crucial to the sound and fast development of the whole nation," Du Ying, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner, said at a Thursday press conference."Under the new plan, the central government will focus on boosting economic growth, raising people's living standards and enhancing environmental conservation in the western region during the next ten years," Du said. The central government will also enhance support for development in the region by lowering tax rates and prices for industrial lands, he added. The NDRC, along with other departments, will compile a catalogue of industries in the western region covered by the government's favorable policies. Companies in these industries will enjoy a favorable corporate income tax rate of 15 percent, compared to the regular rate of 25 percent. The move to further develop the west came as the government took steps such as subsidizing auto and home appliance buyers, to boost domestic demand and lessen reliance on exports.Challenges for China's future development lay in "whether we can continue to boost domestic demand and make it a foundation for overall sustainable growth and whether we can remove constraints on resources and environment," Du said.Turning to this vast region and market was a strategic move, which would help China bolster domestic demand and accelerate transformation of the economic growth pattern, Vice Premier Li Keqiang had said. The vast, resource-rich western region has great potential to help enhance domestic demand as the regional population accounts for 27.5 percent of the country's total, while consumption only takes 18.4 percent of national retail sales, Du said.Early this week, NDRC said it will unveil 23 new infrastructure projects in the western region this year, with a total investment of 682.2 billion yuan (100.62 billion U.S. dollars). The money will be utilized in building railways, roads, airports, coal mines and hydro-power stations.More investments in these new projects than in those started in 2009 reflected the government's intention to push the growth further into the poorer inland region, UBS Securities economist Wang Tao said in an emailed note to clients.China initiated a western region development strategy in 2000 in an effort to help this less-developed area catch up with the relatively well-off coastal area. The strategy covers infrastructure construction, attracting foreign investment and increased efforts in ecological protection. The western region involves six provinces, five autonomous regions and Chongqing municipality, accounting for more than 70 percent of the Chinese mainland's area and habitat of 75 percent of the country's ethnic minority population.Due to this strategy, the combined gross domestic product of the western region reached 6.69 trillion yuan in 2009, four times more than the 1.67 trillion yuan in 2000.

BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Long March and its legacy had contributed to shaping an extraordinary China, said former U.S. national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, when he called upon the headquarter of China's Central Military Commission (CMC) in Beijing on Monday. His meeting with senior Chinese military leader Xu Caihou started with the memory of the Long March which set Brzezinski in mind of his trip to retrace the Long March in 1981."I learned you had retraced China' s Long March with your family before and your wife is a well-known sculptor," said Xu, who showed Brzezinski around the meeting hall where a set of stone carvings were placed portraying the Chinese Red Army and their epic Long March from 1934 to 1936."Currently China's modern construction and its reform cause are another new Long March, and to stick to a peaceful development road is China's long-term and strategic choice," said Xu, CMC Vice Chairman.Brzezinski, who served under former U.S. President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981, had retraced part of the route of the Long March with his family when visiting China in July of 1981.After that China tour, he wrote an article for the Life Magazine titled "An American Family Retraces Mao's Long March", in which he said "For the emerging new China, the Long March is more than an epic of almost unmatched heroism. It is the reminder of the spirit of national unity essential to overcome the legacy of backwardness."Looking around each of the stone carving with great interest, Brzezinski said the "incredible" and "superb" works had reminded him of his China visits over the years, in particular, the trip to review the Long March. These experience helped me to better understand China and some of its historical events, said the 82-year-old strategist. The Long March was a famous military maneuver carried out by the Chinese Red Army led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to combat the Kuomintang Regime.Though many soldiers died on the way of the two-year ordeal, the Red Army finally arrived at Yan'an in western Shaanxi Province after the 25,000-li (12,500-kilometer) trek, where the new headquarters of CPC was later established.Brzezinski said all these historical events had helped to shape an extraordinary China. In his two-hour-long meeting with Xu, Brzezinski stressed the United States and China should have all-round strategic dialogues and strengthen coordination and contact, and work for the peace and stability of the world.Xu agreed the two sides should properly handle bilateral relations and international issues to their mutual benefit instead of as a zero-sum game."More than 30 years of China-U.S. relations have proved the two countries can co-exist peacefully and enjoy common development. China's development will expand cooperation between the two countries," Xu added.Brzezinski is visiting China at the invitation of the Chinese International Institute for Strategic Society.

NGARI/CHENGDU, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, known as the "Roof of the World", on Thursday opened its fourth civil airport in farwest Ngari area, shortening a trip to the regional capital Lhasa to one and half hours from three or four days by car.An Airbus 319 landed at Gunsa Airport in Ngari Prefecture at 10:20 a.m., marking the airport's official opening. The passenger flight from Chengdu, capital of the neighboring Sichuan Province, was operated by Air China's southwestern branch. An Air China flight would fly from Chengdu to Lhasa and on to Ngari every Tuesday and Friday, said Bao Lida, a spokesman with the company's southwestern branch based in Chengdu."The flight leaves Chengdu at 5:50 a.m. and arrives in Lhasa two hours later," said Bao. "It leaves Lhasa at 8:40 a.m. and arrives Ngari at 10:20 a.m."At an altitude of 4,274 meters with a 4,500-meter runway, Gunsa Airport is now the third highest airport in the world. Bamda Airport in Qamdo in eastern Tibet and Kangding Airport in Sichuan Province sit 4,334 meters and 4,280 meters above sea level, respectively.Annual capacity of Gunsa Airport is expected to reach 120,000 passengers by 2020.Before the airport opened, Ngari was linked to Lhasa only by road, taking three or four days to cover the 1,600-km route."Bad transportation infrastructure was the biggest bottleneck crippling Ngari's development, but now with a 100-minute flight, I believe it would bring talents and business opportunities to Ngari ," said Dawa Tashi, deputy secretary of the prefecture committee of the Communist Party of China. But the pricey flight fare of 2,590 yuan (382 U.S. dollars) for the 100-minute flight from Ngari to Lhasa might be out of many people's reach in a prefecture where the annual per capita income was only 3,148 yuan in 2009, which was a 16.8 percent increase compared with that in 2008.Construction of the airport began in May 2007 and cost an estimated 1.65 billion yuan (241.22 million U.S. dollars). The flight distance between Chengdu and Ngari is 2,300 km. Tickets can be purchased at several ticket offices, but are not available on the Internet."This is the first time that I flew to Ngari and it was much more convenient than before," said Liu Li, a passenger on the plane.Liu said she and her friends from south China's Guangdong Province and East China's Shanghai Municipality would visit Ngari since they no longer have to come here by bus, which was a difficult journey.Gunsa Airport is the fourth civil airport in Tibet after Gonggar Airport in Lhasa, Bamda Airport in Qamdo Prefecture and Nyingchi Airport.A fifth airport, Peace Airport in Xigaze, is expected to open in October.Exactly four years ago, China opened a landmark railway linking Tibet with major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
