SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of parents chanted "Too much, too soon," and " Protect our kids, protect our kids," before the school board meeting Tuesday evening. This is the the third time in less than one year that parents have shared their concerns about the district's Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP).  The district started teaching the program last year to students in sixth, eighth and high school following the state's passage of the California Healthy Youth Act.RELATED: Parents keep kids home to protest sex-ed programAshley Bever is a substitute teacher in the district and mom of two middle school students. She kept her kids home from school Tuesday in protest of the program that she calls too graphic. "I don't think you need to give kids more explicit content in order for them to make good choices. We just want it to be age appropriate," she said. "We don't think talking about oral, anal, and vaginal sex in the sixth grade is entirely appropriate or telling middle schoolers you can use a flavored condom."Other parents told the board the material promotes sexual experimentation and doesn't do enough to promote abstinence and pregnancy prevention. 　  "It's not about sex education, it's not about biological science, it's about promulgating and pushing a world view upon them. It's about sowing the seed of idea of gender confusion, gender dysphoria is what you're trying to promote," one parent told the board. District officials say students can opt out of the program with a note from their parent. They say less than one percent did so in 2017.The board maintains the program is state mandated, but attorney Dean Broyles with the National Center for the Law and Policy said that's not true. "There are only recommended curriculum, there are no mandated curriculum under the CA Healthy Youth Act because it's too new and a framework has not even been developed yet," said Broyles. Broyles told the board parents have been waiting almost a year for the public records that show how the curriculum was adopted. He told the board if they don't get the records soon, they'll go to court to fight for them.The board did not take any action on the issue. The item was not on the agenda. Parents say they've been asking the board to put it on the agenda for nearly a year. 2396

We met State Senate President Pro-Tem Toni Atkins at a coastal event for research on climate change. Atkins says it’s everyday attention to universal issues like this that further acceptance of openly gay leaders like her. Christine Kehoe was San Diego’s first openly gay politician. She was elected to the San Diego City Council in 1993 and went on to serve more than a decade in the State Assembly and Senate. “The fact is there are a lot of people who blazed trails to allow me to serve; to allow Toni Atkins, Jen Campbell, Georgette Gomez, Chris Ward….our cup really runneth over in San Diego." Assembly member Todd Gloria said no one should hide who they are. "I think I'm a better elected official because of who I am. I think more importantly, the people of San Diego want to know who their elected officials are." 1015

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Environmental groups are increasing pressure on members of Congress to support the Green New Deal.On Friday, about two dozen demonstrators rallied outside Democratic Congressman Scott Peters' office in the UTC area to get him to sign on. "We're intent on pushing forward with what seems to be the strongest commitment to making important action on climate change by our government," said Karl Aldinger, a Fallbrook resident and member of the a group called Sunrise Movement.Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced the deal in February. It lays out a series of goals, including getting the U.S. to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. It also touches on issues surrounding education and wages. Peters, who represents the 52nd District, is the only San Diego County democrat not to sign onto the deal. He said he prefers a more direct approach through specific actions that can get bipartisan approval. Peters pointed to a series of bills that just passed out of committee."We don't want to scare away people from solutions," Peters said. "This is a problem we only have 10 or 12 years to solve. It can't be done just by Democrats, it can't be done just by liberals. It has to be done by everybody."Political analyst John Dadian says more moederate approaches could play a hand in the 2020 election."This dovetails into why we're seeing, in the last 10 years, what's increased every cycle, the rise of the independent, because the independents are saying I don't want to be Republican or Democrat, I don't always agree, I want to make my own decisions," he said. Dadian said what happens now could very well be remembered in 2020. So far, Democratic representatives Susan Davis, Juan Vargas and Mike Levin are supporting the deal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fitness center chain 24 Hour Fitness is permanently closing hundreds of locations across the U.S., including four in San Diego County.The company shut down all of its facilities earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and despite many states allowing for the reopening of gyms, 24 Hour Fitness “made the difficult decision to close” certain locations.Four San Diego County gyms will be shuttered:Chula Vista (320 Third Ave.)La Jolla (7680 Girard Ave.)San Marcos (641 S. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Friday, a San Diego woman recounted how she was sexually abused by her priest at St. Jude when she was young, hoping it would encourage others to come forward.Walking up to the church to speak she said she felt a wave of emotions, "My chest was heavy, my stomach was sick. I was catching my breath." She told 10News her name is Cynthia Ann Doe, keeping her last name private, wearing a scarf over her head and dark sunglasses, concealing part of her identity for fear of retaliation. She said she could still see the rectory, where Monsignor Gregory Sheridan lived, next to the church. In it's place is a parking lot.She depicted what her life was like when she was just five-years-old, "I had no one to protect me, my mother and my father divorced when I was four, my brother died months before that." She said they lived inside a brightly painted yellow apartment building, sitting just across the street. Ann Doe said she clung to her faith and her family was honored when Monsignor Sheridan took favor in their company. Alone in his bedroom, her lawyer said he violated her with his fingers.She said at that age she couldn't process what happened, "that you are worthless dirty, a bad person, so bad that even God must not love you, because your priest hurt you and made you feel nasty.""I'm asking anyone male or female who may be struggling with what happened to them by Father Sheridan to come forward and be heard," she said.That call growing louder as more cases arise across the country. Pope Francis issued the first law for officials worldwide Thursday, requiring them to report abuse to their superiors.The local Catholic Church also proactive, publishing a list of priests with credible allegations against them. Monsignor Sheridan listed at the bottom of page seven.The statute of limitations ran out for Cynthia decades ago, but she has one request of the Diocese, asking them to pay for her years of therapy, "I would like to be reimbursed, I can give them every bill from 1981." 2023
