BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic corn supply was adequate, and a recent price increase was the result of market speculation, a senior official told Xinhua Thursday.Shang Qiangmin, director at the China National Grain and Oils Information Center, said both the supply and corn reserves were adequate in China and the government was determined to regulate the corn market."Imbalance between corn supply and demand is a misjudgement," Shang said.Although floods that ravaged the country's northeastern regions in late July have caused adverse impacts on regional corn growing, final output was expected to increase from one year earlier due to the expanding of planting areas, Shang said."China has enough corn reserves to meet market demand," he said. The buying boom in the northeastern region is currently caused by enterprises' increasing corn stocks on speculation of price increase, he said.According to Shang, corn stocks at major grain enterprises in northeastern Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, increased by 5.12 million tonnes at the end of July compared with one year earlier. The Chinese government has strengthened macro control of corn market by increasing supply and cracking down on illegal activities that force up corn prices. As the world's major corn producer and consumer, China's annual corn production and consumption both exceed 150 million tonnes.
CANBERRA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping called here on Monday for deepening strategic cooperation with Australia on energy and resources. In a speech delivered to the Australia-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum in the Parliament House, Xi said the cooperation on energy and resources between China and Australia boast profound foundation and great potential, and it has become a shining point for the bilateral economic and trade cooperation.Currently, Australia is the biggest exporter of iron ore, alumina, coal and liquefied natural gas to China, and it is also the biggest supplier of wheat, sheep hair and live cow for China.China is Austria's biggest trading partner and biggest exporting market as well as biggest importer. Despite of global financial crisis, Australia's export to China still rose by 31 percent in 2009.Xi said China, which is still in the process of industrialization and urbanization, increasingly needs energy and mineral resources, while Australia is an important energy and resource producer and exporter, so there is a remarkable potential for Australia to set up strategic cooperation with a nation like China, which boasts huge and steady market demand.

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Friday that the government would continue to regulate the housing market and resolutely crack down on speculative property investment and other unreasonable market demands. He said the government would continue to increase the supply of affordable housing for low-income families in order to consolidate the effects of the regulation over the past months. He pledged to ensure healthy development of the real estate industry and improve people's living conditions.Inspecting a low-rent housing site in Beijing, Li urged the municipal government to offer preferential policies in the areas of investment, land, and taxation to quicken the construction of affordable housing. He said that the affordable housing program should be transparent and fair in order to allow mid-and-low income residents to benefit. In the face of skyrocketing housing prices, the Chinese government has ordered a stringent credit policy to restrict speculative purchases and has increased spending to build affordable housing.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 10.3 percent year-on-year in July, slower than the 11.4 percent growth in June, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday.
