The company is facing new criticism following reports that a data mining firm employed by the Trump campaign improperly kept data on tens of millions of users.CNN reported that that Cambridge Analytica, a data firm with ties to President Donald Trump's campaign, reportedly gained access to information about 50 million Facebook users.The data was collected by a professor for academic purposes in accordance with Facebook rules, the company said. NEW ORLEANS, La. – The oldest known U.S. veteran of World War II celebrated his 111th birthday over the weekend and he did it in style.Like it has for the past five years, The National WWII Museum hosted a birthday celebration for Lawrence Brooks on Saturday. This year though, they followed social distancing guidelines and the centenarian enjoyed the festivities from his home in New Orleans.From his porch, Brooks watched as military planes from the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team and The Big Easy Wing flew over just for him.The museum also had its vocal trio, The Victory Belles, perform a series of numbers for Brooks, including “Happy Birthday.”Lastly, Brooks was presented with a cake, a recorded message from the museum’s CEO, and nearly 10,000 birthday cards collected as a result of a national card drive.“It is such an honor to have the oldest living U.S. veteran of World War II living so close to our institution, and it was meaningful for us to continue to celebrate Lawrence Brooks and his incredible life in a safe manner this year,” said the museum’s assistant director of public engagement, Amber Mitchell, in a press release. “As we continue to lose members of The Greatest Generation, it is so important that we honor these men and women for their bravery and sacrifice while they are with us.”Brooks served in the predominantly African American 91st Engineer Battalion, which was stationed in New Guinea and then the Philippines during WWII, according to the museum. The calls for charges against officers involved in shootings may be growing louder amongst protesters, but charges and prosecutions in these cases remain rare.Five days after Kenosha police officer Rusten Sheskey grabbed Jacob Blake’s shirt and fired seven shots into his back, many are angry no charges have been filed.“The reason people expect charges in these cases to be filed so quickly is because when a civilian harms someone, they're charged, you know, immediately,” said Kate Levine, an associate law professor at Cardozo Law School in New York.“I believe that all ordinary citizens should be treated the way the police are treated, and prosecutors should do a thorough investigation before they charge,” said Levine, who studies police prosecutions.Bowling Green criminal justice professor Phil Stinson tracks these types of cases. He says even when charged with more serious crimes, like manslaughter or murder, officers are rarely convicted.“About 1,000 times each year, an on-duty police officer shoots and kills someone. And it's actually a very rare event that an officer is charged with murder or manslaughter resulting from one of those shootings,” he said.In many cases, experts say it takes public pressure or independent video evidence to even get charges filed.In the case of Laquan McDonald, a black teen shot dead by a white police officer in 2014, it wasn’t until dashcam video was released 13 months after the shooting that Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke was charged and eventually convicted of 2nd degree murder."Absent the release of that footage, what you have is the police officers saying Laquan McDonald was threatening us.
